Aircraft wing rock oscillations suppression by simple adaptive control

2020

Abstract Roll angular motion of the modern aircraft operating in non-linear flight modes with a high angle of attack often demonstrates the limit cycle oscillations, which is commonly known as the wing rock phenomenon. Wing rock dynamics are represented by a substantially non-linear model, with parameters varying over a wide range, depending on the flight conditions (altitude, Mach number, payload mass, etc.) and angle of attack. A perspective approach of the wing rock suppression lies in the adaptation methods. In the present paper an application of the simple adaptive control approach with the Implicit Reference Model (IRM) is proposed and numerically studied. The IRM adaptive controller …

Sliding solutions of second-order differential equations with discontinuous right-hand side

2017

We consider second-order ordinary differential equations with discontinuous right-hand side. We analyze the concept of solution of this kind of equations and determine analytical conditions that are satisfied by typical solutions. Moreover, the existence and uniqueness of solutions and sliding solutions are studied. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

An adaptive multi-rate system for visual tracking in augmented reality applications

2016

The visual tracking of an object is a well-known problem, and it involves many fields of applications. Often a single sensor, the camera, could not provide enough information in order to track the whole object trajectory due to a low updating rate; therefore a multi-sensor system, based also on inertial measurements, could be necessary to improve the tracking accuracy. This leads to the fundamental question: how can information from different sensors be combined when they work at different rates? In this paper an approach based on recursive parameter estimation focusing on multi-rate situations is suggested. The problem is here formulated as the state-of-the-art problem of the visual tracki…

Automatic Take Off and Landing for UAS Flying in Turbulent Air - An EKF Based Procedure

2020

An innovative use of the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is proposed to perform automatic take off and landing by the rejection of disturbances due to turbulence. By using two simultaneously working Extended Kalman Filters, a procedure is implemented: the first filter, by using measurements gathered in turbulent air, estimates wind components; the second one, by using the estimated disturbances, obtains command laws that are able to reject disturbances. The fundamental innovation of such a procedure consists in the fact that the covariance matrices of process (Q) and measurement (R) noise are not treated as filter design parameters. In this way determined optimal values of the aforementioned m…

Flow Control of Fluid in Pipelines Using PID Controller

2019

In this paper, a PID controller is utilized in order to control the flow rate of the heavy oil in pipelines by controlling the vibration in a motor pump. A torsional actuator is placed on the motor pump in order to control the vibration on a motor and consequently controlling the flow rates in pipelines. The necessary conditions for the asymptotic stability of the proposed controller are validated by implementing the Lyapunov stability theorem. The theoretical concepts are validated utilizing numerical simulations and analysis, which proves the effectiveness of the PID controller in the control of flow rates in pipelines.

Buckling and post-buckling analysis of cracked stiffened panels via an X-Ritz method

2019

Abstract A multi-domain eXtended Ritz formulation, called X-Ritz, for the analysis of buckling and post-buckling of stiffened panels with cracks is presented. The theoretical framework is based on the First-order Shear Deformation Theory and accounts for von Karman's geometric nonlinearities. The structure is modeled as assembly of plate elements. Penalty techniques are used to fulfill the continuity condition along the edges of contiguous elements and to satisfy essential boundary conditions requirements. The use of an extended set of approximating functions allows to model through-the-thickness cracks and to capture the crack opening and tip singular fields as well as the structural behav…

Wind component estimation for UAS flying in turbulent air

2019

One of the most important problem of autonomous flight for UAS is the wind identification, especially for small scale vehicles. This research focusses on an identification methodology based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). In particular authors focus their attention on.the filter tuning problem. The proposed procedure requires low computational power, so it is very useful for UAS. Besides it allows a robust wind component identification even when, as it is usually, the measurement data set is affected by noticeable noises. (C) 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Dynamical Features of the MAP Kinase Cascade

2017

The MAP kinase cascade is an important signal transduction system in molecular biology for which a lot of mathematical modelling has been done. This paper surveys what has been proved mathematically about the qualitative properties of solutions of the ordinary differential equations arising as models for this biological system. It focuses, in particular, on the issues of multistability and the existence of sustained oscillations. It also gives a concise introduction to the mathematical techniques used in this context, bifurcation theory and geometric singular perturbation theory, as they relate to these specific examples. In addition further directions are presented in which the application…

New Approach of Controlling Cardiac Alternans

2018

The alternans of the cardiac action potential duration is a pathological rhythm. It is considered to be relating to the onset of ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac death. It is well known that, the predictive control is among the control methods that use the chaos to stabilize the unstable fixed point. Firstly, we show that alternans (or period-2 orbit) can be suppressed temporally by the predictive control of the periodic state of the system. Secondly, we determine an estimation of the size of a restricted attraction's basin of the unstable equilibrium point representing the unstable regular rhythm stabilized by the control. This result allows the application of predictive control…

Betweenness Centrality for Networks with Non-Overlapping Community Structure

2018

Evaluating the centrality of nodes in complex networks is one of the major research topics being explored due to its wide range of applications. Among the various measures that have been developed over the years, Betweenness centrality is one of the most popular. Indeed, it has proved to be efficient in many real-world situations. In this paper, we propose an extension of the Betweenness centrality designed for networks with nonoverlapping community structure. It is a linear combination of the so-called “local” and “global” Betweenness measures. The Local measure takes into account the influence of a node at the community level while the global measure depends only on the interactions betwe…
