The endocannabinoid system in anxiety, fear memory and habituation.
2011
Evidence for the involvement of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in anxiety and fear has been accumulated, providing leads for novel therapeutic approaches. In anxiety, a bidirectional influence of the ECS has been reported, whereby anxiolytic and anxiogenic responses have been obtained after both increases and decreases of the endocannabinoid tone. The recently developed genetic tools have revealed different but complementary roles for the cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor on GABAergic and glutamatergic neuronal populations. This dual functionality, together with the plasticity of CB1 receptor expression, particularly on GABAergic neurons, as induced by stressful and rewarding experiences…
Il principio di gerarchia delle resistenze capacity design
2012
The devastating effects generated by earthquakes occurred in different parts of the world have attract at a major interest in Earthquake Engineering. This branch of Structural Engineering studies the response and capacity of structural systems subjected to seismic actions, and develops design and prediction methods aimed at achieving adequate safety standards in presence of seismic events. A strategy used for the seismic prediction of RC structures, based on the capacity design of structural elements is the "hierarchy of strengths" (HS) principle. The paper shows how a proper use of the HS capacity design method can be included within the seismic design of RC structures achieving high level…
TENACITÀ ALLA FRATTURA INTERLAMINARE DI COMPOSITI CFRP SOTTOPOSTI A PROCESSI DI INVECCHIAMENTO IDROTERMICO
2011
Analysis of the mechanical performance of hybrid (SPR/bonded) single-lap joints between CFRP panels and aluminum blanks
2013
Abstract The increasing use of innovative materials in manufacturing of modern mechanical components has led to the development of reliable joints between innovative (composite materials etc.) and traditional materials (steel, aluminum etc.). In the last few years, hybrid joints, combining the advantages of the adhesive joints and traditional mechanical joints as bolted or riveted joints, have been shown an increasing industrial interest especially in automotive and aerospace sectors. In the present paper a systematic experimental study of hybrid lap joints was carried out with the aim to detect the optimal joint configuration. Tensile tests on hybrid joints made by combining adhesive bondi…
Structural Characterization of Isomeric Dimers from the Oxidative Oligomerization of Catechol with a Biomimetic Catalyst
2007
In a previous paper, it has been reported about the formation of catechol di-, tri- and tetramers within an oxidative polymerization catalyzed by synthetic water-soluble iron-porphyrin as an efficient alternative to bio-labile natural peroxidase. It has also been demonstrated the occurrence of both C-C and C-O-C coupling mechanisms. However, since the coupling products were determined by mass spectroscopy, the exact bonding position could not have been precisely ascertained for the C-C bonded isomeric dimers that are the dominant products of catechol oligomerization. Therefore, here isolation and characterization of catechol isomeric dimers, obtained by oxidative coupling under the catalysi…
Catechol-Initiated Polyethers: Multifunctional Hydrophilic Ligands for PEGylation and Functionalization of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles
2012
Bifunctional CA-PEG (catechol-poly(ethylene glycol)) and multifunctional CA-PEG-PGA/PEVGE (poly(glycidyl amine)/poly(ethylene glycol vinyl glycidyl ether)) ligands for the functionalization and solubilization of nanoparticles are introduced. Tunable polymers with polydispersities1.25 and molecular weights in the range 500-7700 g mol(-1) containing a catechol moiety for conjugation to metal oxide nanoparticles were prepared. The functional PEG ligands were synthesized starting from the acetonide-protected catechol initiator 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-benzodioxole-5-propanol (CA-OH) for oxyanionic polymerization. CA-OH was used both for homopolymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) as well as copolymerizat…
Catechol Acetonide Glycidyl Ether (CAGE): A Functional Epoxide Monomer for Linear and Hyperbranched Multi-Catechol Functional Polyether Architectures
2016
A protected catechol-containing epoxide monomer, catechol acetonide glycidyl ether (CAGE), is introduced. CAGE is conveniently obtained in three steps and enables the incorporation of surface-active catechol moieties into a broad variety of hydrophilic and biocompatible polyether architectures by copolymerization. Via acidic cleavage of the acetal protecting groups, the polymer-attached catechol functionalities are liberated and available for surface attachment or metal complexation. CAGE has been copolymerized with ethylene oxide and glycidol to obtain both linear poly(ethylene glycol) and hyperbranched polyglycerol copolymers, respectively, with multiple surface-adhesive catechol moieties…
The “Needle in the Haystack” Makes the Difference: Linear and Hyperbranched Polyglycerols with a Single Catechol Moiety for Metal Oxide Nanoparticle …
2014
Multifunctional linear (CA-linPG) and hyperbranched polyglycerols (CA-hbPG) bearing a single catechol unit were synthesized by use of an acetonide-protected catechol initiator for the anionic polymerization of ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) and glycidol, respectively. A key feature for the synthesis of the hyperbranched structures was a selective, partial acetal deprotection step. The single catechol unit among a large number of aliphatic 1,2- and 1,3-diol moieties (i.e., the “needle in the haystack”) in both linear and hyperbranched polyglycerols permits dispersion of transition metal oxide nanoparticles in brine, as demonstrated for manganese oxide (MnO) nanoparticles. Molecular weight…
Il corpo come opera plastica: Catherine Malabou e le metamorfosi del corporeo
2019
Performance art (like Orlan’s “Carnal Art”) involves artist body in the performance itself and it is based on a clear phenomenological assumption: we “do not have” a body, but we “are” our body, we are our “sculpture”. Fascinated by the enigmas of change, Aesthetics has sought to address the metaphysical question concerning metamorphosis and the problem of identity persistence in change; the solution has been found for centuries in the opposition between essence and appearance: as highlighted by fantastic literature (Ovid, Apuleius, Kafka), in metamorphosis the “substance” remains unchanged and only appearance (or accident) changes. However, the reflection carried out by Catherine Malabou o…
Characterization of the Epithelial Permeation Enhancing Effect of Basic Butylated Methacrylate Copolymer—In Vitro Studies
2008
Membrane destabilizing properties and increased efflux of doxorubicin from liposomes caused by basic butylated methacrylate copolymer (BBMC), better known under its commercial trade name EUDRAGIT E, have been described in the scientific literature. Here, we investigated the effect of BBMC on suspended and filter-grown Caco2 cells with respect to apical-to-basal transport and membrane permeabilization using transport assays, trypan blue exclusion assay, measurements of transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER), confocal laser scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The effect of inhibiting protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) by okadaic acid was investigated by measuring TEER,…
