Germanium microparticles as optically induced oscillators in optical tweezers

2019

Oscillatory dynamics is a key tool in optical tweezers applications. It is usually implemented by mechanical interventions that cannot be optically controlled. In this work we show that Germanium semiconductor beads behave as optically induced oscillators when subjected to a highly focused laser beam. Such unusual motion is due to the competition between the usual optical forces [1-3] and the radiometric force related to thermal effects, which pushes the beads from the focal region [4]. We characterize the behavior of the Germanium beads in detail and propose a model accounting for the related forces, in good agreement with the experimental data. The well defined direction of oscillations c…

Spin Hall magnetoresistance in the non-collinear ferrimagnet GdIG close to the compensation temperature

2017

We investigate the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in a gadolinium iron garnet (GdIG)/platinum (Pt) heterostructure by angular dependent magnetoresistance measurements. The magnetic structure of the ferromagnetic insulator GdIG is non-collinear near the compensation temperature, while it is collinear far from the compensation temperature. In the collinear regime, the SMR signal in GdIG is consistent with the usual [Formula: see text] relation well established in the collinear magnet yttrium iron garnet, with [Formula: see text] the angle between magnetization and spin Hall spin polarization direction. In the non-collinear regime, both an SMR signal with inverted sign and a more complex an…

Spin polarization of magnetoresistive materials by point contact spectroscopy

2003

In the strive to find a straightforward method for determining the spin polarization, the analysis of the Andreev reflection process in point contact junctions has attracted much interest. However, the prerequisite for anevaluation of the transport spin polarization in this scheme is the existence of elastic (ballistic or diffusive) transport, which cannot be assumed a priori. We therefore also include inelastic processes in our analysis and exemplify that thermal effects can have a significant effect on data evaluation. As ferromagnetic samples with a predicted half metallic behavior and comparably low conductivity we used thin films of the double perovskite Sr 2 FeMoO 6 and bulk material …

Optical studies of laser-induced gray-tracking in KTP

1999

We have studied gray-tracking induced by a pulsed and polarized 532-nm laser beam in flux grown KTiOPO/sub 4/ (KTP) crystals. Transmission spectra measured under polarized light give different results: gray-tracking leads to an increase in the initial anisotropy of the linear optical properties of KTP, and the polar axis is the most sensitive to this process. The dynamics of relaxation of gray-tracking is anisotropic and depends on the wavelength under analysis. We show a possible induced modification of the crystal surface and also the existence of an intensity above which gray-tracking reaches the saturation point. We then measure the temperature above which gray-tracking no longer exists.

Influence of the microstructure and laser shock processing (LSP) on the corrosion behaviour of the AA2050-T8 aluminium alloy

2011

International audience; The corrosion behaviour of AA2050-T8 was studied after polishing and after laser shock processing (LSP) treatment using the electrochemical microcell technique and the SVET. After polishing, pitting at constituent particles and intergranular corrosion were observed. By contrast, no intergranular corrosion developed after LSP. Microcell measurements revealed that LSP increases the pitting potential. SVET measurements revealed that local anodic currents are systematically lower on LSP-treated surfaces than on polished ones. The current density on the LSP-treated surface remains constant around 50 μA cm−2 up to 123 min after immersion, while on the polished surface it r…

Real time polarization imaging of weld pool surface

2015

The search for an efficient on-line monitoring system focused on the real-time analysis of arc welding quality is an active area of research. The topography and the superficial temperature field of the weld pool can provide important information which can be used to regulate the welding parameters for depositing consistent welds. One difficulty relies on accessing this information despite the bright dazzling welding arc. In the present work, Stokes polarimetry and associated shape-from-polarization methods are applied for the analysis of the weld pool through its 810 nm-wavelength infrared emissions. The obtained information can provide a better understanding of the process, such as the usa…

Corrosion Behaviour of Ti6Al4V and TiMo10Zr4 Alloys in the Ringer’s Solution: Effect of pH and Plastic Strain

2015

The corrosion behaviour of titanium alloys is not well understood – especially the role of the microstructure and plastic strain. In this paper, the influence of the microstructure and plastic strain on the corrosion resistance of TiMo10Zr4 and Ti6Al4V alloys was studied in the Ringer’s solution at 37 °C. Measurements were performed for different pH values and in aerated and de-aerated solutions using potentiodynamic polarization techniques. Results obtained on the two alloys were compared. It was shown that in the absence of plastic strain TiMo10Zr4 shows better corrosion resistance than Ti6Al4V (especially for pH = 8). By contrast, the current density in the passive range measured after 8…

Widely Tunable Polarization Modulation Instability in D2O-Filled Microstructured Optical Fiber

2021

Polarization modulation instability (PMI) is a nonlinear effect in which two pump photons with identical polarization propagating in a nonlinear medium give rise to two new photons of different frequency and orthogonal polarization with respect to the pump photons [1] . In this work, we report the experimental demonstration of broad spectral tuning of PMI generated in solid-core microstructured optical fibers (MOF) that were previously infiltrated with heavy water (D 2 O). MOFs were designed and fabricated with the appropriate dispersion characteristics to produce widely spaced PMI spectral bands when they were filled with D 2 O and pumped at 1064 nm. Heavy water was chosen due to suitable …

Electrochemically-induced TiO2 incorporation for enhancing corrosion and tribocorrosion resistance of PEO coating on 7075 Al alloy

2018

Abstract 7075 Al alloy was PEO-treated in a silicate based electrolyte containing 3 g l-1 potassium titanyl oxalate using unipolar and bipolar pulsed current waveforms. The coating formed by the bipolar waveform with the wider cathodic pulses showed volcano-like surface morphology with no evidence of large pores at the metal/coating interface. It revealed the highest corrosion performance due to the synergistic effect of TiO2 incorporation and structural/morphological features along with a better passivation behavior indicating no pitting susceptibility. For this coating, the tribocorrosion tests showed no potential drop during sliding under 1 N with the lowest volume loss of 0.022 mm3.

Direct observation of half-metallicity in the Heusler compound $Co_{2}MnSi$

2014

Ferromagnetic thin films of Heusler compounds are highly relevant for spintronic applications owing to their predicted half-metallicity, that is, 100% spin polarization at the Fermi energy. However, experimental evidence for this property is scarce. Here we investigate epitaxial thin films of the compound Co2MnSi in situ by ultraviolet-photoemission spectroscopy, taking advantage of a novel multi-channel spin filter. By this surface sensitive method, an exceptionally large spin polarization of () % at room temperature is observed directly. As a more bulk sensitive method, additional ex situ spin-integrated high energy X-ray photoemission spectroscopy experiments are performed. All experimen…
