Strong four-photon conversion regime of cross-phase-modulation-induced modulational instability

2000

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the strong conversion regime of parametric four-photon amplification or induced modulational instability in the normal dispersion regime of propagation in a highly birefringent fiber. Such optical mixing is observed by injecting a tunable linearly polarized (along the fast axis) anti-Stokes signal wave copropagating with a pump equisplitted between the fiber axes (i.e., linearly polarized at 45\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}) which entail that the two pump modes experience cross-phase modulation. In agreement with a four-wave model developed to study the depleted regime of the mixing process, we observe that the strongest conversion occurs…

Using molecular alignment to track ultrafast collisional relaxation

2014

Field-free molecular alignment has been used in order to track the collisional relaxation occurring in a molecular gas. CO${}_{2}$ molecules were initially irradiated by a short linearly polarized laser pulse resulting in the increase of their rotational energy. The evolution of the subsequent ultrafast relaxation process was optically probed after irradiating the sample with a second, weaker, short pulse leading to the alignment of the preheated molecules. Using classical molecular dynamic simulations, we were able to quantitatively reproduce the experimental shapes and amplitudes of the recorded revival transients for a time interval extending from 25 to 500 ps until thermalization of the…

All-Optical Polarization Control for Telecom Applications

2015

We describe a phenomenon of self-organization of the light state-of-polarization in optical fibers based on a nonlinear cross-polarization interaction between an incident signal and its backward replica. Several proof-of-principles for telecom applications are reported.

Study of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon computed from the Adler function

2014

We compute the Adler function on the lattice from vacuum polarization data with twisted boundary conditions using numerical derivatives. The study is based on CLS ensembles with two flavours of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We extrapolate the lattice data for the Adler function to the continuum limit and to the physical pion mass and analyze its dependence on the momentum transfer. We discuss the application of this method to the extraction of the $u,d$ contribution to $a_\mu^{\mathrm{HLO}}$.

Momentum partition between constituents of exotic atoms during laser-induced tunneling ionization

2015

The tunneling ionization of exotic atoms such as muonic hydrogen, muonium, and positronium in a strong laser field of circular polarization is investigated, taking into account the impact of the motion of the center of mass on the the tunneling ionization dynamics. The momentum partition between the ionization products is deduced. The effect of the center-of-mass motion for the momentum distribution of the ionization components is determined. The effect scales with the ratio of the electron (muon) to the atomic core masses and is nonnegligible for exotic atoms, while being insignificant for common atoms. It is shown that the electron (muon) momentum shift during the under-the-barrier motion…

Brief encounter at the molecular level: what muons tell us about molecule-based magnets

2005

Abstract Spin-polarized muons can be implanted in various molecular magnetic materials in order to measure static and dynamic magnetic field distributions at a local level. The positively-charged muon is an unstable, radioactive particle which has spin–1/2, a lifetime of 2.2 μ S , about one-ninth of the proton mass and a magnetic moment of approximately 1/200 μ B . Both pulsed and continuous beams of muons can be produced with almost 100% spin polarization and significant intensity at various accelerator facilities. The subsequent decay of the muon into a positron allows the extraction of the muon-spin autocorrelation function which can be related to the magnetic field distribution inside a…

Enhancement of the linear polarization of coherent bremsstrahlung by collimation of the photon beam

1998

A method is described to precisely predict the relative intensities and degrees of linear polarization of coherent bremsstrahlung from diamond crystals, taking into account the collimation of the photon beam and the lateral distribution and angular divergence of the electron beam in addition to the properties of the crystal. It is confirmed that the increase of the degree of linear polarization through collimation of the photon beam is a sizable effect. Compared to previous approaches considerable progress has been made in reproducing the experimentally observed relative intensities of collimated coherent bremsstrahlung, by taking into account the angular distribution of coherent bremsstrah…

Measurements of the induced polarization in the quasi-elastic A(e,e′p→) process in non-coplanar kinematics

2020

Abstract We report measurements of the induced polarization P → of protons knocked out from 2H and 12C via the A ( e , e ′ p → ) reaction. We have studied the dependence of P → on two kinematic variables: the missing momentum p miss and the “off-coplanarity” angle ϕ p q between the scattering and reaction planes. For the full 360° range in ϕ p q , both the normal ( P y ) and, for the first time, the transverse ( P x ) components of the induced polarization were measured with respect to the coordinate system associated with the scattering plane. P x vanishes in coplanar kinematics, however in non-coplanar kinematics, it is on the same scale as P y . We find that the dependence on ϕ p q is si…

Nuclear spin and magnetic moment of 11Li

1987

Abstract Nuclear spin and magnetic moment of 11Li have been measured by optical pumping of a fast atomic beam. The angular asymmetry of the β-radiation from the polarized nuclei was used to detect the hfs of the 2s 2 S 1 2 −2 p 2 P 1 2 resonance line and the NMR signal cubic LiF crystal lattice. The results I= 3 2 and μI=3.6673(25) n.m. indicate a pure 1p 3 2 state of the valence proton.

A new representation of the Adler function for lattice QCD

2013

We address several aspects of lattice QCD calculations of the hadronic vacuum polarization and the associated Adler function. We implement a representation derived previously which allows one to access these phenomenologically important functions for a continuous set of virtualities, irrespective of the flavor structure of the current. Secondly we present a theoretical analysis of the finite-size effects on our particular representation of the Adler function, based on the operator product expansion at large momenta and on the spectral representation of the Euclidean correlator at small momenta. Finally, an analysis of the flavor structure of the electromagnetic current correlator is perform…
