Poincaré sphere analysis of a ferroelectric liquid crystal optical modulator: application to optimize the contrast ratio

The Poincare sphere representation is used to analyze the polarization transformation achieved with a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) optical modulator. This device acts as a switchable wave-plate, in which the orientation of the principal axes rotates under the action of an applied bipolar voltage. In the standard operational mode for intensity switching, the rotation angle of the principal axes is �θ = π/4 and the phase shift is φ = π (half-wave-plate). However, for wavelengths different from the design one, the FLC deviates from the half-wave-plate performance and the optical contrast is diminished. Nuclear spin relaxation has been developed as a standard method for studying molecular motions in liquids, solids, polymers, and—to a lesser extent—gases, staring with the pioneering work of Bloembergen, Purcell, and Pound [1]. Of the great variety of molecular motions possible (e.g., translations, rotations, vibrations) rotations are particularly important for nuclear spin relaxation. Conversely, nuclear spin relaxation can be especially successful if information about rotational motions is desired. Hyperfine Paschen-Back regime in alkali metal atoms: consistency of two theoretical considerations and experiment

Simple and efficient "\lambda-method" and "\lambda/2-method" (\lambda is the resonant wavelength of laser radiation) based on nanometric-thickness cell filled with rubidium are implemented to study the splitting of hyperfine transitions of 85Rb and 87Rb D_1 line in an external magnetic field in the range of B = 0.5 - 0.7 T. It is experimentally demonstrated from 20 (12) Zeeman transitions allowed at low B-field in 85Rb (87Rb) spectra in the case of \sigma+ polarized laser radiation, only 6 (4) remain at B > 0.5 T, caused by decoupling of the total electronic momentum J and the nuclear spin momentum I (hyperfine Paschen-Back regime). Field-free molecular alignment of asymmetric top molecules using elliptically polarized laser pulses

International audience; We show theoretically that a short specific elliptically polarized laser pulse driving an asymmetric top molecule can induce postpulse revivals of three-dimensional (3-D) alignment. By choosing the field ellipticity resulting in the best compromise between the alignment of two molecular axes, we demonstrate that efficient 3-D alignment can be achieved at low temperature. In the experiment, the field-free alignment of moderately cool ethylene molecules is probed by using a technique based on the optical Kerr effect. Control of 3-D field-free alignment opens the door to a large range of applications in chemistry as well as in molecular optics.

Complete nonlinear polarization control in an optical fiber system.

International audience; We consider the counterpropagating interaction of a signal and a pump beam in an isotropic optical fiber. On the basis of recently developed mathematical techniques, we show that an arbitrary state of polarization of the signal beam can be converted into any other desired state of polarization. On the other hand, an unpolarized signal beam may be repolarized into two specific states of polarization, without loss of energy. Both processes of repolarization and polarization conversion may be controlled by adjusting the polarization state of the backward pump.

Modal attraction on low order modes by Kerr effect in a graded refractive index multimode fiber

Modal attraction towards low order modes in a GRIN multimode fiber was experimentally observed at high power and characterized, thus enriching the dynamics of the Kerr self-cleaning effect leading to quasi fundamental mode generation.

Self-polarization effect in the middle point of an optical fiber

In this paper, we report both numerically and experimentally an unexpected phenomenon of self-polarization occurring in the middle point of an isotropic optical fiber when two uncorrelated partially polarized waves are simultaneously injected at the ends of the fiber. More precisely, we demonstrate that two counterpropagating waves of equal intensity exhibit a spontaneous organization of their polarization states around two pools of attraction just in the middle point of propagation, and then both recover a partially polarized state at their respective fiber outputs. All-optical control and stabilization of the polarization state of a 10-Gbit/s RZ telecommunication signal

International audience; We report the experimental observation of an all-fibered polarization attractor at telecommunication wavelengths. We experimentally show that is possible to all-optical control the state of polarization of a 10 Gbit/s telecommunication signal through the injection of a counterpropagating pump wave.

Field-free molecular alignment of CO2 mixtures in presence of collisional relaxation

The present work explores the extension of the concept of short-pulse-induced alignment to dissipative environments within quantum mechanical density matrix formalism (Liouville equation) from the weak to the strong field regime. This is illustrated within the example of the CO2 molecule in mixture with Ar and He, at room temperature, for which a steep decrease of the alignment is observed at moderate pressure because of the collisional relaxation. Sodium vapor cell laser guide star experiments for continuous wave model validation

Recent numerical simulations and experiments on sodium Laser Guide Star (LGS) have shown that a continuous wave (CW) laser with circular polarization and re-pumping should maximize the fluorescent photon return flux to the wavefront sensor for adaptive optics applications. The orientation and strength of the geomagnetic field in the sodium layer also play an important role affecting the LGS return ux. Field measurements of the LGS return flux show agreement with the CW LGS model, however, fluctuations in the sodium column abundance and geomagnetic field intensity, as well as atmospheric turbulence, induce experimental uncertainties.
