Between militantism and academic research: rethinking hospitality and solidarity in the context of the EU’s political crisis

In the current context of the so-called migration crisis, it is essential to recall that the crisis per se is much more a political crisis than it is a disequilibrium in migration movements. Though Europe has seen an increase in the arrival of migrants, and especially of asylum seekers, the last year has actually been characterized by a drastic reduction of arrivals. The fortress Europe has indeed tightened its grip, by over-controlling and militarizing European borders and the Mediterranean Sea. The growing tendency of European national governments to reach out to far-right and populist movements that have as a main political line the control of immigration, makes it necessary to build cit…

I beni confiscati come nuovo spazio pubblico

2014

In the nort…

Traumatic Redemption Chronotope as Theoretical Model to Study Serial Shakespeares

2019

T

his article proposes a methodology to study Shakespearean intertexts in contemporary complex TV series. While the presence of Shakespeare’s inter-texts in contemporary complex TV seems ubiquitous, a sustained and theoretically focused academic study of the impact of Shakespeare in these works has not been produced. Reviewers and social media users’ comments have proposed readings of the series pointing at the importance of the series’ redemptive qualities. Taking Hannah Wolfe Eisner’s “Into the Middle of Things: Traumatic Redemption and the Politics of Form” as basis, I am presenting a theoretical model to study serial Shakespeares, with which I am referr…

In rete la cucina è politica. Alcuni modelli di analisi e uno studio di caso.

2013

Legislative agenda-setting in parliamentary democracies

2009

Various strands of literature in comparative politics regard governments as the only noteworthy initiators and mainsprings of legislative policy making in parliamentary democracies. Opposition activity in policy making is more often associated with the intention to prevent, rather than to shape, policy. Does this perception reflect real-life politics? To answer this question, this article discusses different arguments that link institutional and policy-related characteristics to the incentives and constraints of different government and parliamentary actors to initiate or co-sponsor legislative bills. More specifically, it relates policy-, office- and vote-related incentives, as well as ins…

Diasporic Politics and Defining Diaspora in Law: The Case of Latvia

2021

Abstract Passage of the Diaspora Law of Latvia required policymakers to go through an arduous process of discussing the limitations of diaspora, weighing the potential risks and benefits of various possible approaches, and ultimately agreeing on a definition to be included in the law. The end result was a very broad interpretation of who can be recognized as part of the Latvian diaspora. In this paper, to understand the political process of arriving at a definition, the theoretical perspectives of the ‘narrow’ and ‘broad’ definitions of diaspora are discussed, the motivations driving national governments to engage with their diasporas are analysed, and the discourse used during the drafting…
