Enteroscopic Cyanoacrylate Sclerotherapy of Jejunal and Gallbladder Varices in a Patient with Portal Hypertension

2001

Bleeding from varices outside the gastroesophageal region is a rare, but regularly reported complication of portal hypertension. The treatment differs from the management of esophageal and gastric varices. We present here a report on the diagnosis and treatment of bleeding jejunal and gallbladder varices in a man with portal hypertension caused by chronic calcifying pancreatitis. The patient was suffering from recurrent, frequent, and massive gastrointestinal bleeding from varices at the anastomotic area of a cholecystojejunostomy. For diagnostic purposes, we carried out percutaneous Duplex ultrasonography and push enteroscopy with the Doppler technique. The treatment of varices in this are…

NEONATAL CAPSAICIN TREATMENT DOES NOT PREVENT SPLANCHNIC VASODILATATION IN PORTAL-HYPERTENSIVE RATS

1994

It has been suggested that the peripheral sensory neurons are involved in the splanchnic hemodynamic changes of portal hypertension. Therefore the influence of permanent ablation of sensory neurons by neonatal capsaicin pretreatment (50 mg/kg, subcutaneously) on the development of the hyperdynamic splanchnic circulation in portal-hypertensive rats was studied. In adulthood, portal hypertension was induced with partial portal vein ligation. In study 1, systemic and splanchnic hemodynamics were measured by means of a radiolabeled-microsphere technique in portal-hypertensive rats, under ketamine anesthesia, pretreated with capsaicin or vehicle. Mean arterial pressure, heart rate, cardiac index…

Accumulation of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) in the liver of patients with renal failure and portal hypertension

1986

Summary Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) has gained wide clinical acceptance as a colloidal plasma substitute. We were able to study the liver biopsies of two patients with renal failure who developed ascites after repeated infusions of HES. All types of liver cells displayed massive accumulation of HES with the morphologic resemblance to a storage disease. These changes could be distinguished clearly from the lesions of a hereditary disorder by light and electron microscopy. Although it is difficult to establish a causative role for HES in the development of ascites on the bases of morphological changes alone, one should be cautious about giving HES to patients with renal failure until exact data…

Nitric oxide-mediated beta 2-adrenoceptor relaxation is impaired in mesenteric veins from portal-hypertensive rats.

1996

Abstract BACKGROUND & AIMS: beta-Adrenergic relaxation seems to be mediated by nitric oxide. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes induced by portal hypertension in beta 2-adrenergic vasorelaxation. METHODS: Isolated rat mesenteric veins were relaxed by salbutamol, and nerve- mediated vasocontractions were induced by electrical field stimulation. Responses were evaluated in the presence of NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) or tetrodotoxin. Immunocytochemical techniques were used for localization of neuronal NO synthase. RESULTS: Salbutamol-induced relaxations were decreased in rings from portal-hypertensive animals. L- NAME reduced these relaxations, but its effects were mor…

Anatomical differences in responsiveness to vasoconstrictors in the mesenteric veins from normal and portal hypertensive rats

1996

The present study evaluates the effects of pre-hepatic portal hypertension, induced in rats by partial portal vein ligation, on the responsiveness of rostral (proximal) and caudal (distal) rings from the mesenteric vein. The anatomical origin of the sample influenced the response to vasoconstrictors in sham-operated animals, and this pattern of reactivity was specifically modified in portal-ligated rats. In veins from sham-operated rats, contraction induced by a submaximal concentration of KCl (60 mM) was greater in proximal than in distal rings. Vasopressin and 5-hydroxytryptamine contracted mainly distal rings, methoxamine showed a greater effect on proximal rings, and endothelin-1 and an…

A Successful Crowdsourcing Approach for Bird Sound Classification

2023

Automated recorders are increasingly used in remote sensing of wildlife, yet automated methods of processing the audio remains challenging. Identifying animal sounds with machine learning provides a solution, but optimizing the models requires annotated training data. Producing such data can require much manual effort, which could be alleviated by engaging masses to contribute to research and share the workload. Birdwatchers are experts on identifying bird vocalizations and form an ideal focal audience for a citizen science project aiming for the required multitudes of annotated avian audio data. For this purpose, we launched a web portal that was targeted and advertised to Finnish birdwatc…

Smarter Open Government Data for Society 5.0: Are Your Open Data Smart Enough?

2021

Nowadays, governments launch open government data (OGD) portals that provide data that can be accessed and used by everyone for their own needs. Although the potential economic value of open (government) data is assessed in millions and billions, not all open data are reused. Moreover, the open (government) data initiative as well as users’ intent for open (government) data are changing continuously and today, in line with IoT and smart city trends, real-time data and sensor-generated data have higher interest for users. These “smarter” open (government) data are also considered to be one of the crucial drivers for the sustainable economy, and might have an impact on information and communi…

A Methodological Approach for Developing and Validating a Parsimonious and Robust Measurement Tool: The Academic E-Service Quality (ACEQUAL) Model

2021

Nowadays, in the higher education sector, the quality measurement process of education-related services is assuming a crucial role to support focused and targeted improvement activities deeply centered on students’ needs/necessities. These are considered crucial factors for dealing with the current academic competitive context. Therefore, the quality measurement process has to be precise and accurate, namely the measurement model on which it is based has to be parsimonious and robust. The present work proposes an effective and easy-to-use methodological approach suitable for supporting the structuring of a measurement tool. Its effectiveness is shown with reference to the academic e-service…

Marihuānas un tās dekriminalizēšanas rāmējumi Latvijas interneta mediju publikācijās un lietotāju komentāros 2011. - 2017. gadam

2018
