Entre la sintaxis y el discurso: el caso de 'a lo mejor' y 'al menos' en la conversación coloquial

2018

This paper studies the Spanish forms a lo mejor (maybe) and al menos (at least) from a modular perspective, revisiting the categorization of a lo major and al menos according to the involved linguistic level and analyzing the relations between the adverbial uses of these forms and the discursive ones. Such relations show that the forms a lo mejor and al menos can be considered bicategorial lexical items, what is implemented by a corpus study based on data from spoken language.

A few remarks on colloquial language in Italy

2016

The present work focuses on the analysis of colloquial Italian starting from the rasgos coloquializadores (a series of conversational markers) describing the Spanish sociolinguistic research on informal contexts. After a short introduction on the rasgos, the second part of this article deals with the pattern of colloquial Italian. It may be considered a macro-variety sharing features belonging to several varieties of the Italian linguistic repertoire, further supported by the use of dialect. The theoretical context is also based on a significant number of examples from spontaneous and colloquial speech collected in Palermo. These examples show both the varied features of colloquial Italian …

Presentation of culture and pragmatic knowledge in a Finnish secondary school EFL textbook

Kulttuurin opettamisen on yleisesti katsottu olevan tärkeä osa kielen opettamista, mutta englannin kielen aseman muutos globaaliksi lingua francaksi on tuonut uusia haasteita kielen ja kulttuurin opetukseen. Viime vuosikymmeninä monet tutkijat ovatkin ehdottaneet siirtymistä englannin opettamiseen kansainvälisenä kielenä, jolloin opetuksen tavoitteena on oppijan kulttuurienvälisen kompetenssin parantaminen. Tällöin erityisesti kulttuurienvälinen pragmatiikka sekä kulttuurinen tietoisuus ovat suuressa roolissa. Vaikka kulttuuriselle monimuotoisuudelle olisi tekstikirjamateriaaleissa kysyntää, tutkimukset ovat osoittaneet, että kulttuurit, joissa englantia puhutaan pääasiallisena kielenä, eri…

Differentiating among pragmatic uses of words through timed sensicality judgments

2013

Pragmatic and cognitive accounts of figurative language posit a difference between metaphor and metonymy in terms of underlying conceptual operations. Recently, other pragmatic uses of words have been accounted for in the Relevance Theory framework, such as approximation, described in terms of conceptual adjustment that varies in degree and direction with respect to the case of metaphor. Despite the theoretical distinctions, there is very poor experimental evidence addressing the metaphor/metonymy distinction, and none concerning approximation. Here we used meticulously built materials to investigate the interpretation mechanisms of these three phenomena through timed sensicality judgments.…

Bald-Faced Lies

2018

Abstract Bald-faced lies are utterances that seem to lack the intent of the speaker to deceive the hearer, which is usually assumed in the definition of proper lying. Therefore, the so-called non-deceptionists call the latter assumption into question. The so-called deceptionists, sticking to the traditional definition of lying, argue in turn that bald-faced lies either are no real lies or are connected to an intention to deceive. The chapter gives a concise overview of the main positions in this dispute, discusses the cases typically employed to illustrate bald-faced lies, and summarizes recent experimental findings on how ordinary speakers perceive bald-faced lies. It turns out that ordina…
