2022

Several regional syntheses have been published on Bronze Age solid-hilted swords, but none for France and the Benelux countries. This dissertation aims first at filling this gap by listing the swords from this region. By adding data from these pre-existing studies, it is possible to study the distribution of solid-hilted swords on a European scale. The building of an inventory is an essential condition to study the diffusion of these weapons over long distances. This must come along with models to characterise the organisation of the swords production and the ways they spread out. It requires us to question the status of the craftsmen, their organisation and their location. One of the first…

2018

The sword, which was invented during Bronze Age, is certainly the ultimate weapon, associated to war and warriors, designed to fight during combats. However, because of its technical complexity, its ostentatious aspect, especially when it is equipped with a bronze hilt, or its strong individualization for example through ornaments, swords can also be considered as symbols. This symbol can be connected to an individual, a social position, a community or to another concept we cannot precisely understand. Of course, material and immaterial aspects do not always exclude each other, and a single object can be used for both. However, a first inspection of these weapons shows that some of them cou…

2012

What is the current state of research, twenty years after the Ambérieu-en-Bugey colloquium, regarding the chronological setitng of the Bell Beaker horizon, the periodisation of pottery styles and the relationships between Bell Beakers and local groups in the late Neolithic in Mediterranean France ? A brief inventory of knowledge from 1992 together with research from the last two decades will allow us to re-evaluate stratigraphic evidence and radiocarbon dates and to examine the evolution of sttlement distribution and the artefact contexts and associations

Were Bronze Age metalworkers skilled?: Perspectives from the study of the making of Bronze Age swords

2019

International audience; Beyond the provocation of the title, the question of ancient metalworkers’ skills, that has been recently discussed by Maikel Kuijpers for Bronze Age axes, makes perfect sense concerning Bronze Age swords, especially when equipped with a metallic hilt. These weapons are indeed almost always described as masterpieces of metalwork made by skilled and specialized craftsmen. This does not take into account the breakthroughs made since the 1960s in the study of the fabrication techniques of bronze artefacts. Even if it is true that most Bronze Age swords are looking flawless on the surface, imaging techniques such as X-ray or CT-scan enable archaeologists to have a glimps…
