Module categories of finite Hopf algebroids, and self-duality

2017

International audience; We characterize the module categories of suitably finite Hopf algebroids (more precisely, $X_R$-bialgebras in the sense of Takeuchi (1977) that are Hopf and finite in the sense of a work by the author (2000)) as those $k$-linear abelian monoidal categories that are module categories of some algebra, and admit dual objects for "sufficiently many" of their objects. Then we proceed to show that in many situations the Hopf algebroid can be chosen to be self-dual, in a sense to be made precise. This generalizes a result of Pfeiffer for pivotal fusion categories and the weak Hopf algebras associated to them.

One precursor, three apolipoproteins: The relationship between two crustacean lipoproteins, the large discoidal lipoprotein and the high density lipo…

2014

The novel discoidal lipoprotein (dLp) recently detected in the crayfish, differs from other crustacean lipoproteins in its large size, apoprotein composition and high lipid binding capacity, We identified the dLp sequence by transcriptome analyses of the hepatopancreas and mass spectrometry. Further de novo assembly of the NGS data followed by BLAST searches using the sequence of the high density lipoprotein/1-glucan binding protein (HDL-BGBP) of Astacus leptodactylus as query revealed a putative precursor molecule with an open reading frame of 14.7 kb and a deduced primary structure of 4889 amino acids. The presence of an N-terminal lipid bind- ing domain and a DUF 1943 domain suggests the…

Protective Effect of Astaxanthin on Primary Retinal Cells of the Gerbil Psammomys Obesus Cultured in Diabetic Milieu

2017

Astaxanthin is a major marine carotenoid with powerful antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. The in vitro protective effect of astaxanthin in adult retinal cells of the type-2 diabetic model Psammomys obesus in hyperglycemic conditions was investigated. Primary retinal cells were cultured in normal (5 mM) or high concentrations of glucose (25 and 40 mM) for 5 days and treated with 1-20 μM astaxanthin for the last 48 h of culturing. Mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity and cell viability were assessed using MTT test and trypan blue exclusion dye. Retinal cells were characterized by immunohistochemistry. The results showed that mitochondrial function increased significantly (P<0.05) …

Filtration pressure by bivalves affects the trophic conditions in Mediterranean shallow ecosystems

2009

Bivalve filtration may control the amount of seston in coastal waters, reducing local euthrophication and keeping degrading phenomena like hypoxia and anthropogenic pollution under control. Two Sicilian brackish-marine ponds (Ganzirri and Faro) present us with the opportunity to gain data on the effect of bivalve filtration on the amount of particulate organic matter in the field. The cultivation of bivalves has been carried out in both of the ponds since the early 1990s but stopped in Ganzirri in 1995.We tested whether the cessation of bivalve cultivation influenced features of organic matter available to suspension feeders (total suspended matter, its inorganic and organic fractions, chlo…

Analysis of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes as a tool for assessing the environmental impact of aquaculture: a case study from the western Medite…

2005

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios ( 13C/ 12 C and 15N/14 N) of in situ dominant primary producers and consumers were investigated to assess the impact on a natural ecosystem of a land-based fish farm along the south-western coast of Sicily (Italy). The putatively impacted area close to the farm along outfall was compared with other locations at increasing distances from the outfall. Carbon and mainly nitrogen stable isotopes revealed evidence of widespread aquaculture waste in the study site: benthic organisms collected in the impacted area showed more enriched δ 15N signatures than those at greater distances from the outfall, suggesting a large contribution of aquaculture waste to …

Settore ICAR/21 - UrbanisticaThe chapter reports about a reinterpretation and interpretation of the bio-regional paradigm as a reference for interpretative practices governance and territorial project aimed at the "relocation" of human settlement in its socio-cultural and environmental milieu of proximity. The primary reference is to the wide and polyphonic bio-regional cultural movement developed in particular in the United States between the late 1960s and early 1970s.

CHP retrofit for a large Med-Tvc Desalination Plant: High efficiency assessment for different design options under the current legislative EU framewo…

2015

Integrated power plants in "dual purpose" configuration may represent a viable option for energy cost abatement of desalted water produced by MED-TVC (Multiple Effect Distillation along with Thermal Vapour Compression). In this paper an existing large MED-TVC plant with a 36,000 m(3)/day capacity is studied: a plant retrofit is designed, based on a steam power plant with condensation and steam extraction used to drive the steam ejector. As the plant operates in CHP (Combined Heat and Power) mode, the possibility to assess the integrated "CHP + MED-TVC" as high efficiency cogeneration according to Directive 2004/8/EC is discussed. Based on a model developed in Engineering Equation Solver, a …

A simulation study for assessing the impact of energy storage systems for Fast Reserve with additional synthetic inertia control on the Continental E…

2022

This article shows the results of a simulation study on the application of battery storage systems for providing fast frequency regulation (the so-named Fast Reserve) with additional synthetic inertia control. The aim of the study is to assess the impact of the extension of the regulation provided by the FRUs to all the Continental Europe synchronous grid, with the same power proportions of the first Italian FRU auction. The simulations are conducted in two different scenarios: a base one related to 2020 and a future one related to 2040 and based on ENTSO-E projections for load and generation. The results show that, for the reference incident of 3000 MW, the frequency quality parameters in …

A Simulation Study for Assessing the Minimum Number of V2G Recharge Points in Favignana

2022

Issues related to the stability of non-interconnected grids are of high relevance given the increasing presence of renewable sources in the power generation system. In order to ensure adequate levels of system's reliability, it is necessary to find new methods to ensure the stability of the electric grid. The present work proposes a methodology for the definition of the minimum number of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) charging points that would allow the integration of 1 MW of photovoltaic power in the power grid of the Italian island of Favignana, electrically disconnected from the continental grid. Primary frequency regulation simulations are carried out in Matlab/Simulink environment for differen…

Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature ComparateBetween late XIX and the first 30 years of the XX Century some Italians immigrated to the United States – such as Bernardino Ciambelli Italo Stanco Garibaldi Marto Lapolla Louis Forgione Michael Fiaschetti and Prosper Buranelli – wrote some texts that starting from the typical features of Mystery (serialization and incardination of the fabula in a specific urban context) together with some of the characteristic elements of the Hard boiled never lose sight of the peculiar 'mission' of political economic and social denunciation. Taking the political and social problems as the primary key of their works these writers want to remove the defamatory role attributed by the public opinion fomented by the press to Italian immigrated community. Their works don’t have the main intent to stage detectives that can solve a case or unmask a culprit but rather they aim to denounce social distortions corruption and injustices suffered by an entire community and not least to indicate the picture of what on the contrary that same society could have been.
