In vitro assessment of a novel additive manufactured titanium implant abutment
2021
Background Dental implant temporization remains a clinical challenge. A novel abutment simplifying the procedure was developed, but conventional fabrication was costly and unpredictable. A workflow was developed to fabricate the novel abutment using additive manufacturing. This in vitro investigation assessed the additive manufactured (AM) novel abutments to conventionally manufactured (CM) abutments. Material and methods The AM abutments were fabricated in dental-grade titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) using Selective Laser Melting and were post-processed. The CM abutments were milled and subsequently laser welded manually. Pin strength of the abutments was assessed using a universal loading machine. T…
From measuring to revealing. 7 Paradigmatic actions for the construction of models as tools of representation
2017
Green composites based on biodegradable polymers and anchovy (Engraulis Encrasicolus) waste suitable for 3D printing applications
2022
Every day large amounts of fish waste are produced and grossly discarded in markets around the world causing environmental and hygiene issue. The use of these scraps for the production of materials with higher added value can definitely contributed to solve this problem. In this work, 10% and 20% of anchovy fishbone powder (EE), obtained by market waste, were microbiological and mechanical tested and subsequently added to polylactic acid (PLA) and to a commercial blend of biodegradable co-polyesters (Mater-Bi®). Rheological characterization suggests the potential printability of all prepared composites filaments. 10% EE filled composites showed outstanding printability. Morphological analys…

κ-Carrageenan and PVA blends as bioinks to 3D print scaffolds for cartilage reconstruction.
2022
3D printing of polymeric scaffolds and autologous stem cells is a promising tool for damaged facial cartilage reconstruction surgeries. To this end, suitable bioinks are needed to generate scaffolds with the required morphological and functional features. We formulated hydrogel bioinks using k-Carrageen (kC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in three different weight ratios. The kC gives the systems the ability to undergo rapid sol-to-gel transitions upon cooling from 60 °C and above to body temperature, while the PVA is used as rheology modifier and porogen. The latter is crosslinked after molding or printing by freeze-thaw cycling for 1 day (FT1) or 5 days (FT5). To select the most suitable f…
Ordered networks of rat hippocampal neurons attached to silicon oxide surfaces.
2001
The control of neuronal cell position and outgrowth is of fundamental interest in the development of applications ranging from cellular biosensors to tissue engineering. We have produced rectangular networks of functional rat hippocampal neurons on silicon oxide surfaces. Attachment and network formation of neurons was guided by a geometrical grid pattern of the adhesion peptide PA22-2 which matches in sequence a part of the A-chain of laminin. PA22-2 was applied by contact printing onto the functionalised silicon oxide surface and was immobilised by hetero-bifunctional cross-linking with sulfo-GMBS. Geometric pattern matching was achieved by microcontact printing using a polydimethylsiloxa…
Spot compliant neuronal networks by structure optimized micro-contact printing
2001
Neuronal cell growth in vitro can be controlled with micropatterned structures of extracellular matrix proteins such as laminin. This technique is a powerful tool for studying neuronal cell function in order to increase experimental reproducibility and to specifically design innovative experimental setups. In this paper the correlation between the structural dimensions of the ECM pattern and the shape of the resulting cellular network is analyzed. The aim of the present study was to position neuronal cell bodies as precisely as possible and to induce directed cell differentiation. PCC7-MzN cells were cultured on laminin patterns. The line width, node size and gap size in-between cell adhesi…
Assessment of Arundo donax Fibers for Oil Spill Recovery Applications
2019
In the last years, natural fibers are increasingly investigated as an oil recovery system in order to overcome the oil spillage phenomena, thus preserving environment and aquatic life. In particular, lignocellulose-based fibers have recently been employed with promising results. In such a context, the aim of this paper is to assess the oil sorption capability of natural fibers extracted from the stem of the giant reed Arundo donax L., a perennial rhizomatous grass belonging to the Poaceae family that grows naturally all around the world thanks to its ability to tolerate different climatic conditions. Sorption tests in several pollutants and water as a reference were carried out. The fibers …
Compatibility between traditional ground layers and 3D printing materials
2018
Starting point of this work was the restoration of a Panel Painting depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds with a Saint Bishop, by an unknown author, stored in the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia di Palazzo Abatellis, in Palermo. It was decided to integrate a missing angular decorative element of the painting’s frame in order to restore the integrity of the frame by reverse engineering and 3D printing. Reintegration was feasible as the frame has a modular decorative pattern and the remaining three corners were available. Reverse engineering and 3D printing techniques have been used in order to find a solution according to the principles of recognition, reversibility and compatibility. Mo…
On the Effect of Downscaling in Inkjet Printed Life-Inspired Compartments
2019
The fabrication of size-scalable liquid compartments is a topic of fundamental importance in synthetic biology, aiming to mimic the structures and the functions of cellular compartments. Here, inkjet printing is demonstrated as a customizable approach to fabricate aqueous compartments at different size regimes (from nanoliter to femtoliter scale) revealing the crucial role of size in governing the emerging of new properties. At first, inkjet printing is shown to produce homogenous aqueous compartments stabilized by oil-confinement with mild surfactants down to the hundreds of picoliter scale [1]. Raster Image Correlation Spectroscopy allows to monitor few intermolecular events by the involv…
