Asymptotic expansion of a partition function related to the sinh-model

2014

This paper develops a method to carry out the large-$N$ asymptotic analysis of a class of $N$-dimensional integrals arising in the context of the so-called quantum separation of variables method. We push further ideas developed in the context of random matrices of size $N$, but in the present problem, two scales $1/N^{\alpha}$ and $1/N$ naturally occur. In our case, the equilibrium measure is $N^{\alpha}$-dependent and characterised by means of the solution to a $2\times 2$ Riemann--Hilbert problem, whose large-$N$ behavior is analysed in detail. Combining these results with techniques of concentration of measures and an asymptotic analysis of the Schwinger-Dyson equations at the distributi…

Singular hyperbolic systems

1999

We construct a class of vector fields on 3-manifolds containing the hyperbolic ones and the geometric Lorenz attractor. Conversely, we shall prove that nonhyperbolic systems in this class resemble the Lorenz attractor: they have Lorenz-like singularities accumulated by periodic orbits and they cannot be approximated by flows with nonhyperbolic critical elements.

Laplace’s Method of Integration in the Path Integral Approach for the Probabilistic Response of Nonlinear Systems

2020

In this paper the response of nonlinear systems under stationary Gaussian white noise excitation is studied. The Path Integral (PI) approach, generally employed for evaluating the response Probability Density Function (PDF) of systems in short time steps based on the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation, is here used in conjunction with the Laplace’s method of integration. This yields an approximate analytical solution of the integral involved in the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation. Further, in this manner the repetitive integrations, generally required in the conventional numerical implementation of the procedure, can be circumvented. Application to a nonlinear system is considered, and pertinent compa…

Characters of relative p'-degree over normal subgroups

2013

Let Z be a normal subgroup of a finite group G , let ??Irr(Z) be an irreducible complex character of Z , and let p be a prime number. If p does not divide the integers ?(1)/?(1) for all ??Irr(G) lying over ? , then we prove that the Sylow p -subgroups of G/Z are abelian. This theorem, which generalizes the Gluck-Wolf Theorem to arbitrary finite groups, is one of the principal obstacles to proving the celebrated Brauer Height Zero Conjecture

A quantitative analysis of Educational Data through the Comparison between Hierarchical and Not-Hierarchical Clustering

2017

Many research papers have studied the problem of taking a set of data and separating it into subgroups through the methods of Cluster Analysis. However, the variables and parameters involved in Cluster Analysis have not always been outlined and criticized, especially in the field of Science Education. Moreover, in the field of Science Education, a comparison between two different Clustering methods is not discussed in the literature. Conceptions of students about modeling in physic are investigated by using an open-ended questionnaire. The questionnaire is analyzed through Clustering methods. The clustering results obtained by using the two methods are compared and show a good coherence bet…

Characterization of a neutron-beta counting system with beta-delayed neutron emitters

2016

Abstract A new detection system for the measurement of beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities has been characterized using fission products with well known β-delayed neutron emission properties. The setup consists of BELEN-20, a 4π neutron counter with twenty 3He proportional tubes arranged inside a large polyethylene neutron moderator, a thin Si detector for β counting and a self-triggering digital data acquisition system. The use of delayed-neutron precursors with different neutron emission windows allowed the study of the effect of energy dependency on neutron, β and β–neutron rates. The observed effect is well reproduced by Monte Carlo simulations. The impact of this dependency on …

A New Three-Dimensional Track Fit with Multiple Scattering

2017

Modern semiconductor detectors allow for charged particle tracking with ever increasing position resolution. Due to the reduction of the spatial hit uncertainties, multiple Coulomb scattering in the detector layers becomes the dominant source for tracking uncertainties. In this case long distance effects can be ignored for the momentum measurement, and the track fit can consequently be formulated as a sum of independent fits to hit triplets. In this paper we present an analytical solution for a three-dimensional triplet(s) fit in a homogeneous magnetic field based on a multiple scattering model. Track fitting of hit triplets is performed using a linearization ansatz. The momentum resolution…
