TW Hydrae association with X-shooter

2019

Measurements of the protoplanetary disk frequency in young star clusters of different ages indicate disk lifetimes <10Myr. However, our current knowledge of how mass accretion in young stars evolves over the lifespans of disks is subject to many uncertainties, especially at the lower stellar masses. In this study, we investigate ongoing accretion activity in the TW Hydrae association (TWA), the closest association of pre-main sequence stars with active disks. The age (8-10Myr) and the proximity of the TWA render it an ideal target to probe the final stages of disk accretion down to brown dwarf masses. The study is based on homogeneous spectroscopic data from 300nm to 2500nm, obtained synopt…

Accuracy assessment and position correction for low-cost non-differential GPS as applied on an industrial peat bog

1999

A low-cost, non-differentially corrected hand-held GPS receiver was tested on an industrial peat production bog. A correction procedure (‘pseudo-differential correction’) was derived that corrected data points to the nearest position on a line defining the centre of each 15-m wide field. The result was a corrected log of track points for each field for all points lying along the field. It was found that the mean orthogonal distance from a field centreline was linearly correlated with mean uncorrected GPS data error (r 2 0.99) such that as GPS error increased so the accuracy obtained by correction decreased. For a signal with a mean uncorrected error of 30 m it was possible to reduce the err…

Assisted baseline subtraction in complex chromatograms using the BEADS algorithm.

2017

The data processing step of complex signals in high-performance liquid chromatography may constitute a bottleneck to obtain significant information from chromatograms. Data pre-processing should be preferably done with little (or no) user supervision, for a maximal benefit and highest speed. In this work, a tool for the configuration of a state-of-the-art baseline subtraction algorithm, called BEADS (Baseline Estimation And Denoising using Sparsity) is developed and verified. A quality criterion based on the measurement of the autocorrelation level was designed to select the most suitable working parameters to obtain the best baseline. The use of a log transformation of the signal attenuate…

Significance of passively induced stretch reflexes on achilles tendon force enhancement

1998

An in vivo buckle transducer technique was applied to study the reflex contribution to ATF enhancement during passive dorsiflexion stretches. Single stretches led to a linear ATF increase in the absence of an EMG reflex response, whereas clear ATF enhancement over the passive component occurred 13-15 ms after the onset of EMG responses. To quantify the reflexly induced increase in ATF, the stretched position was maintained. The mean reflex effect was two to four times greater than the passive stretch effect.

Crystal fabrics and element impurities (Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca, and Ba/Ca) in shells of Arctica islandica—Implications for paleoclimate reconstructions

2013

Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca and Ba/Ca values are heterogeneously distributed in shells of Arctica islandica. These patterns are largely associated with crystal fabrics (size, habit and orientation of crystals) or the processes controlling them. The outer sublayer of the outer shell layer (oOSL; homogenous and irregular simple prismatic crystal fabrics,) contained element/Ca values up to 62% higher than the inner sublayer (iOSL; crossed-acicular, crossed-lamellar, fine crossed-lamellar and irregular simple prismatic crystal fabrics). A gradual decrease in Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca values was observed from the outer portions of the oOSL toward the oOSL/iOSL transition zone. This chemical shift was accompanied by a gr…

Room temperature acid sonication ICP-MS multielemental analysis of milk

2005

Abstract Room temperature acid sonication of milk samples is proposed as a fast alternative methodology for the determination of the total content of 45 elements (Li, Al, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Y, Mo, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, U, Sb, Te, Cs, Ba, Hg, Pb, Bi, Th, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf and Ta) in milk by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The aforementioned procedure involves a 10 min sample pre-treatment. Measurements were made in quantitative and semiquantitative (Totalquant ® ) modes of analysis using Rh as internal standard and Be, Ge, Tb and Re for internal calibration of the equipment in the semiquantitative mode. The…

A Bi-objective Optimization Study of an Acid-Base Flow Battery for High Efficiency and Improved Power Density

2022

Electrical energy storage is critical for a broader penetration of renewable energies with intermittent nature, such as solar and wind energy. The Acid/Base Flow Battery (AB-FB) is a unique, sustainable, and environmental-friendly storage technology with high electrolyte solution energy density. The method relies on reversible electrodialytic technologies using bipolar membranes to transform electrical energy into chemical energy related to pH gradients and vice versa. The charge phase is accomplished by using bipolar membrane electrodialysis, whereas the discharge phase is performed via bipolar membrane reverse electrodialysis. In a previous work, we developed an advanced multi-scale proce…

Wooden panel paintings investigation: An air-coupled ultrasonic imaging approach

2007

In this paper, a method for the study of wooden panel paintings using air-coupled acoustical imaging is presented. In order to evaluate the advantages of the technique, several samples were made to mimic panel paintings along with their typical defects. These specimens were tested by means of both single-sided and through-transmission techniques using planar transducers. Image data were processed by means of a two-dimensional (2-D)-fast Fourier transform-based algorithm to increase the S/N ratio and 2-D representations (C-scans) were generated. The simulated defects were imaged using both configurations. Investigations were undertaken on four antique paintings from a private collection. The…
