Predicting sediment deposition rate in check-dams using machine learning techniques and high-resolution DEMs

2021

Sediments accumulated in check dams are a valuable measure to estimate soil erosion rates. Here, geographic information systems (GIS) and three machine learning techniques (MARS-multivariate adaptive regression splines, RF-random forest and SVM-support vector machine) were used, for the first time, to predict sediment deposition rate (SR) in check-dams located in six watersheds in SW Spain. There, 160 dry-stone check dams (~ 77.8 check-dams km−2), accumulated sediments during a period that varied from 11 to 23 years. The SR was estimated in former research using a topographical method and a high-resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) (average of 0.14 m3 ha−1 year−1). Nine environmental-to…

Uncertainty evaluation in the differential measurements of power losses in a power drive system

2021

Abstract In order to guarantee a correct classification in the standardized energy efficiency classes, the current standards concerning the power drive systems prescribe that their power losses must be evaluated with great accuracy. This circumstance involves the usage of expensive measurement systems, since accurate instrumentation, skilled personnel and controlled environments are required. During the design stage of a power drive system, however, the measurement of the absolute value of its power losses is not always needed. Often, in fact, it is enough to assess the power losses variations caused by a modification of either hardware or software sections of the power drive system. In the…

Classifying efficient alternatives in SMAA using cross confidence factors

2006

Abstract Stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis (SMAA) is a family of methods for aiding multicriteria group decision making. These methods are based on exploring the weight space in order to describe the preferences that make each alternative the most preferred one. The main results of the analysis are rank acceptability indices, central weight vectors and confidence factors for different alternatives. The rank acceptability indices describe the variety of different preferences resulting in a certain rank for an alternative; the central weight vectors represent the typical preferences favouring each alternative; and the confidence factors measure whether the criteria data are suff…

Stochastic Multicriteria Acceptability Analysis (SMAA)

2010

Stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis (SMAA) is a family of methods for aiding multicriteria group decision making in problems with uncertain, imprecise or partially missing information. These methods are based on exploring the weight space in order to describe the preferences that make each alternative the most preferred one, or that would give a certain rank for a specific alternative. The main results of the analysis are rank acceptability indices, central weight vectors and confidence factors for different alternatives. The rank acceptability indices describe the variety of different preferences resulting in a certain rank for an alternative, the central weight vectors represe…

New method of grain-boundary extraction by directional optimal filtering: application to estimating creep in metals

2002

It is economically important for manufacturers of high- temperature machines to be able to measure creep so they can predict residual service life more accurately. This paper describes and refines an image analysis method for evaluating creep in laboratory test pieces. It is a preliminary study of how to extract relevant information for creep mea- surement by counting cavities. Sample preparation for quantification by image analysis is an important step determining the further development of the image analysis technique. Grain-boundary extraction, which in- volves directional information, is the major problem to be solved before measurement can be automated. The search for a crest-line extr…

Towards the integration and development of a cross-European research netwerk and infrastructure : the DEterminants of Diet and Physical ACtivity (DED…

2014

To address major societal challenges and enhance cooperation in research across Europe, the European Commission has initiated and facilitated ‘joint programming’. Joint programming is a process by which Member States engage in defining, developing and implementing a common strategic research agenda, based on a shared vision of how to address major societal challenges that no Member State is capable of resolving independently. Setting up a Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) should also contribute to avoiding unnecessary overlap and repetition of research, and enable and enhance the development and use of standardised research methods, procedures and data management. The Determinants of Diet …

Heterogeneous structures studied by an interphase elasto-plastic damaging model

2013

Heterogeneous materials present a mechanical response strongly dependent on the static and kinematic phenomena occurring in the constituents and at their joints. At the mesoscopic level the interaction between the units is simulated by mean of apposite mechanical devices such as the zero thickness interface model where contact tractions and displacement discontinuities are the primary static and kinematic variables respectively. In heterogeneous materials the response also depends on joint internal stresses. The introduction of internal stresses brings to the interphase model or an enhancement of the classical zero-thickness interface. With the term 'interphase' we shall mean a layer separa…

Computational Study of Association of Dihydroxybenzoic Acids in Solution: Testing the Molecular Self-Association Computational Methodology for Format…

2020

Already validated methodology for self-association in solutions were used to evaluate if this method could also be used in other studies regarding association in solution. Three isomeric dihydroxybenzoic acids were used to calculate Gibbs free energies of association for homodimers, heterotetramers and associates with solvent molecules by using DFT calculations in multiple environments and having different conformations.

Implementation of the quality training program in Spain.

2019

e18296 Background: The ECO Foundation is a collaboration of experts representing the major Spanish hospitals in the pursuit of excellence in cancer treatment. Since 2015, ECO has been collaborating with ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) in quality initiatives in cancer care, like the QOPI (Quality Oncology Practice Initiative) program and the QOPI Certification Program (QCP). The Quality Training Program (QTP) is a 6-month program with 3 in-person learning sessions that prepares oncology teams to design implement and lead successful quality improvement activities in their practices. In 2018, ECO reached a new agreement with ASCO to implement this program in Spain. Methods: The Q…
