The space age and the origin of space research

2001

The exploration of space is one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century. In the ideal photo album of this century one could hardly avoid including such pictures as our blue planet seen from space and the human footprint on the Moon’s surface; the close-up images of a comet’s nucleus and the rough landscape of Mars; the floating of astronauts in the black vacuum around a space station and the rings of Saturn photographed from an approaching spacecraft.

Using privacy-transformed speech in the automatic speech recognition acoustic model training

2020

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) requires huge amounts of real user speech data to reach state-of-the-art performance. However, speech data conveys sensitive speaker attributes like identity that can be inferred and exploited for malicious purposes. Therefore, there is an interest in the collection of anonymized speech data that is processed by some voice conversion method. In this paper, we evaluate one of the voice conversion methods on Latvian speech data and also investigate if privacy-transformed data can be used to improve ASR acoustic models. Results show the effectiveness of voice conversion against state-of-the-art speaker verification models on Latvian speech and the effectivene…

Analytical evaluation of structural response for stationary multicorrelated input

1990

Abstract An analytical procedure is presented which can drastically reduce computational effort in the evaluation of the spectral moments of an elastic linear multi-degree-of-freedom system subjected to a stationary multicorrelated input process. The reduction in computer time is possible since the cross-spectral moments of two oscillators can be obtained in recursive manner as a linear combination of the spectral moment of each oscillator taken separately, which is evaluated by means of a very fast numerical technique.

Field-portable Mössbauer spectroscopy on Earth, the Moon, Mars, and beyond

2011

ABSTRACT Iron occurs naturally as Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , and, to a lesser extent, as Fe 0 . Many fundamental (bio)geochemical processes are based on redox cycling between these oxidation states. Mossbauer spectroscopy provides quantitative information about the distribution of Fe among its oxidation states, identification of Fe-bearing phases, and relative distribution of Fe among those phases. Portable, miniaturised Mossbauer spectrometers were developed for NASA9s Mars Exploration Rovers (in operation since 2004) and provide a means for non-destructive, in-situ field investigations. On Mars, these instruments provided evidence for aqueous activity with implications for habitability, were applied…

Design of the CGAL Spherical Kernel and application to arrangements of circles on a sphere

2009

International audience; This paper presents a CGAL kernel for algorithms manipulating 3D spheres, circles, and circular arcs. The paper makes three contributions. First, the mathematics underlying two non trivial predicates are presented. Second, the design of the kernel concept is developed, and the connexion between the mathematics and this design is established. In particular, we show how two different frameworks can be combined: one for the general setting, and one dedicated to the case where all the objects handled lie on a reference sphere. Finally, an assessment about the efficacy of the \sk\ is made through the calculation of the exact arrangement of circles on a sphere. On average …

Magnetic resonance imaging of the siliceous skeleton of the demosponge Lubomirskia baicalensis

2005

The skeletal elements (spicules) of the demosponge Lubomirskia baicalensis were analyzed; they are composed of amorphous, non-crystalline silica, and contain in a central axial canal the axial filament which consists of the enzyme silicatein. The axial filament, that orients the spicule in its longitudinal axis exists also in the center of the spines which decorate the spicule. During growth of the sponge, new serially arranged modules which are formed from longitudinally arranged spicule bundles are added at the tip of the branches. X-ray analysis revealed that these serial modules are separated from each other by septate zones (annuli). We describe that the longitudinal bundles of spicule…

Strengthened splitting methods for computing resolvents

2021

In this work, we develop a systematic framework for computing the resolvent of the sum of two or more monotone operators which only activates each operator in the sum individually. The key tool in the development of this framework is the notion of the “strengthening” of a set-valued operator, which can be viewed as a type of regularisation that preserves computational tractability. After deriving a number of iterative schemes through this framework, we demonstrate their application to best approximation problems, image denoising and elliptic PDEs. FJAA and RC were partially supported by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain and the European Regional Development Fund …

Linear stability analysis of gas-fluidized beds for the prediction of incipient bubbling conditions

2010

Abstract This work focuses on the development of a novel linear stability criterion for the state of homogeneous fluidization regime, based on a new mathematical model for gas-fluidized beds. The model is developed starting from the well-known particle bed model. A mono-dimensional momentum balance is derived leading to a set of equations which explicitly include voidage-gradient dependent terms (elastic force) for both solid and fluid phases. A fully predictive criterion for the stability of homogeneous fluidization state is here proposed, based on the well-known Wallis’ linear stability analysis. The criterion requires the choice of an appropriate averaging distance, which in the present …

INTER-ORGANIZATIONAL NETWORKS FOR INNOVATIONS AND SUSTAINABILITY

2021

The present Thesis is structured as a collection of three essays linked by one core idea: contributing to research knowledge on inter-organizational network dynamics in the context of innovation and the promotion of sustainability. In this Thesis, the author takes a systemic perspective and analyses the interactions between diverse groups of stakeholders, aiming to identify and interpret the logic underlying the formation of inter-organizational partnerships to promote innovation and sustainability. The dynamics of inter-organizational networks are influenced by several internal and external factors, such as strategic cooperation with stakeholders, structural changes (such as an R&I policy …
