ATLAS operations in the GridKa T1/T2 Cloud
2011
The ATLAS GridKa cloud consists of the GridKa Tier1 centre and 12 Tier2 sites from five countries associated to it. Over the last years a well defined and tested operation model evolved. Several core cloud services need to be operated and closely monitored: distributed data management, involving data replication, deletion and consistency checks; support for ATLAS production activities, which includes Monte Carlo simulation, reprocessing and pilot factory operation; continuous checks of data availability and performance for user analysis; software installation and database setup. Of crucial importance is good communication between sites, operations team and ATLAS as well as efficient cloud l…
Analysis of a Station Black-Out transient in SMR by using the TRACE and RELAP5 code
2014
The present paper deals with the investigation of the evolution and consequences of a Station Black-Out (SBO) initiating event transient in the SPES3 facility [1]. This facility is an integral simulator of a small modular reactor being built at the SIET laboratories, in the framework of the R&D program on nuclear fission funded by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and led by ENEA. The SBO transient will be simulated by using the RELAP5 and TRACE nodalizations of the SPES3 facility. Moreover, the analysis will contribute to study the differences on the code predictions considering the different modelling approach with one and/or three-dimensional components and to compare the capa…
The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement prior to the Vilnius Eastern Partnership Summit
2014
Abstract This paper seeks to explore how the EU policy on Ukraine evolved in the run-up to the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius in November 2013. In particular, it looks into the preparations leading to the signature of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. Thereby it contributes to better understanding of the EU policy debate related to the associated negotiations with the Eastern Partnership countries. Prior to the Vilnius Summit there were high expectations that signature of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement would become a key deliverable of the summit. After the EU had postponed the signing of the agreement due to Ukraine’s backsliding in democracy for several times, the process…
Minimum theorems for displacement and plastic strain rate histories in structural elastoplasticity
1975
The finite element method approach is used to obtain formulations of analysis problems relative to elastic-plastic structures when subjected to prescribed programmes of loads, and under the restrictive hypotheses:a) the yielding surfaces are piecewise linearized, andb) the plastic flow-laws are supposed to be of holonomic type within a single “finite” time interval. For mulations are given as linear complementarity problems and quadratic programming problems: one pair of formulations in terms of velocity and plastic multiplier rate histories, and another pair in terms of plastic multiplier rate histories only. The solutions are shown to be characterized by two minimum principles for displac…
Virtual Reality and Psychopathology
2009
Progress in the development of Virtual Reality (VR) is faster than has been forecast, which makes deep reflection on its potential uses and abuses absolutely necessary. The current article focuses on the analysis of some of the applications and implications of VR on psychopathology. It is obvious that they could be many, but we are only focusing on: (a) VR as a model to answer some central questions that traditionally have intrigued psychopathologists; and (b) VR and possible psychopathological experiences. We believe that VR has the potential of becoming a tool that will allow psychopathology to challenge and modify theoretical positions already established, and to pose new ones. This new …
Hierarchical Evolutionary Algorithms and Noise Compensation via Adaptation
2007
Hierarchical Evolutionary Algorithms (HEAs) are Nested Algorithms composed by two or more Evolutionary Algorithms having the same fitness but different populations. More specifically, the fitness of a Higher Level Evolutionary Algorithm (HLEA) is the optimal fitness value returned by a Lower Level Evolutionary Algorithm (LLEA). Due to their algorithmic formulation, the HEAs can be efficiently implemented in Min-Max problems. In this chapter the application of the HEAs is shown for two different Min-Max problems in the field of Structural Optimization. These two problems are the optimal design of an electrical grounding grid and an elastic structure. Since the fitness of a HLEA is given by a…
Prediction of BOD5 content of the inflow to the treatment plant using different methods of black box - the case study
2020
The publication presents the possibility of modeling in a 1 d advance of the content of organic compounds in the influent wastewater to the treatment plant, where the content of these compounds is determined by both the biochemical and chemical oxygen demand. To predict the quality of the wastewater at the inflow a set of indicators where used to make measurements on a daily basis. In order to develop statistical models 3 methods where used, namely: multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), boosted trees (BT), and genetic programming (GP). The carried-out calculations showed that, to calculate the BOD5 there can only be used models developed on the basis of the value of daily wastewa…
Estimación mediante programación genética de los patrones del suelo humectantes para el riego por goteo
2012
Drip irrigation is considered as one of the most efficient irrigation systems. Knowledge of the soil wetted perimeter arising from infiltration of water from drippers is important in the design and management of efficient irrigation systems. To this aim, numerical models can represent a powerful tool to analyze the evolution of the wetting pattern during irrigation, in order to explore drip irrigation management strategies, to set up the duration of irrigation, and finally to optimize water use efficiency. This paper examines the potential of genetic programming (GP) in simulating wetting patterns of drip irrigation. First by considering 12 different soil textures of USDA–SCS soil texture t…

Analysis of the IEEE 802.11e EDCA Under Statistical Traffic
2006
Many models have been proposed to analyze the performance of the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) and the IEEE 802.11e enhanced distributed coordination function (EDCA) under saturation condition. To analyze DCF under statistical traffic, Foh and Zukerman introduce a model that uses Markovian Framework to compute the throughput and delay performance. In this paper, we analyze the protocol service time of EDCA mechanism and introduce a model to analyze EDCA under statistical traffic using Markovian Framework. Using this model, we analyze the throughput and delay performance of EDCA mechanism under statistical traffic.
