We review a new theory of viscoelasticity of a glass-forming viscous liquid near and below the glass transition. In our model we assume that each point in the material has a specific viscosity, which varies randomly in space according to a fluctuating activation free energy. We include a Maxwellian elastic term and assume that the corresponding shear modulus fluctuates as well with the same distribution as that of the activation barriers. Modeling Drug-Induced Anorexia by Molecular Topology

Molecular topology (MT) has demonstrated to be a very good technique for describing molecular structures and to predict physical, chemical, and biological properties of compounds. In this paper, a topological-mathematical model based on MT has been developed for identifying drug compounds showing anorexia as a side effect. An external validation (test set) has been carried out, yielding over an 80% correct classification in the active and inactive compounds. These results reinforce the role of MT as a potential useful tool for predicting drug side effects.
Drug combination studies of curcumin and genistein against rhodesain of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense

Curcumin and genistein are two natural products obtained from Curcuma longa L. and soybeans, endowed with many biological properties. Within the last years they were shown to possess also a promising antitrypanosomal activity. In the present paper, we investigated the activity of both curcumin and genistein against rhodesain, the main cysteine protease of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense; drug combination studies, according to Chou and Talalay method, allowed us to demonstrate a potent synergistic effect for the combination curcumin-genistein. Aesthetic factors determining quality and comfort in childhood classroom

This study analyses how school age children experience their educational environment. The objective is to collect the determining factors of aesthetic quality and comfort at school. A pluralistic methodology allows: gather both quantitative and qualitative data using photographic elicitation, and show the responses on an artistic way. Eighty-six children participate on this research; they are from 3 until 5 years old, and belong to rural and urban schools of Alicante. Older Peruvian Migrants’ Capacity and Desire to Send Remittances from Spain

This article draws on the conceptual framework of capacity and desire to analyze the remitting behavior of older Peruvian migrants in Spain. Cross-sectional survey data are explored using regression analysis to estimate how local and transnational factors relate to the sending of remittances. To reveal the complexities involved in this activity, the findings are discussed in the light of qualitative data gathered through semi-structured interviews with older Peruvian migrants in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. RENT CREATION AND RENT SHARING: NEW MEASURES AND IMPACTS ON TOTAL FACTOR PRODUCTIVITY

International audience; This analysis proposes new measures of rent creation and rent sharing and assesses their impact on productivity on cross-country-industry panel data. We find first that: (1) anticompetitive product market regulations positively affect rent creation and (2) employment protection legislation boosts hourly wages, particularly for low-skill workers. However, we find no significant impact of this employment legislation on rent sharing, as the hourly wage increases are offset by a negative impact on hours worked.
