This chapter shows the important impact that a specific set of services, those belonging to the creative industries, have on regional economic development and wealth generation. Creative industries are a set of knowledge-based activities focused on the generation of meaning, contents and aesthetic attributes through the use of creativity, skill and talent, and have the potential to create wealth from trade and intellectual property rights. Developing Mobile Ontologies; Who, Why, Where, and How?

The number of mobile subscribers in the world is soon reaching the three billion mark. According to the newest estimates, majority of the subscribers are already in the developing countries, whereas the number of subscribers in the industrialized countries is about to stagnate around one billion. Because especially in the developing countries the only access to Internet are mobile devices, developing high quality services based on them grows in importance. Ontologies are an important ingredient towards more complicated mobile services. In this paper we refine the taxonomy for mobile ontologies and discuss their creation, business models, maintenance and intellectual property rights (IPR).

Thermodynamic Properties of Sodium n-Alkanecarboxylates in Water and in Water + Cyclodextrins Mixtures

Densities and heat capacities of water−substrate, water−cyclodextrin, and water−substrate−cyclodextrin systems were determined at 298 K. The substrates studied are sodium n-alkanecarboxylates (CnCOONa) (from sodium acetate to sodium decanoate) and the cyclodextrins are hydroxypropyl-α-cyclodextrin (HP-α-CD), hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin, (HP-β-CD), hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin (HP-γ-CD) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). The apparent molar volumes and heat capacities of CnCOONa in water were calculated as functions of concentration. Can Experimental Electron-Density Studies be Used as a Tool to Predict Biologically Relevant Properties of Low-Molecular Weight Enzyme Ligands?

The case of protease inhibitor model compounds incorporating an aziridine or epoxide ring is used to exemplify how application of experimental electron-density techniques can be used to explain the biological properties of low-molecular weight enzyme ligands. This is furthermore seen in the light of a comparison of crystal and enzyme environments employing QM/MM computations to elucidate to which extent the properties in the crystal can be used to predict behavior in the biological surrounding.

Tailor‐Made Amino Acids and Fluorinated Motifs as Prominent Traits in Modern Pharmaceuticals

Structural analysis of modern pharmaceutical practices allows for the identification of two rapidly growing trends: the introduction of tailor-made amino acids and the exploitation of fluorinated motifs. Curiously, the former represents one of the most ubiquitous classes of naturally occurring compounds, whereas the latter is the most xenobiotic and comprised virtually entirely of man-made derivatives. Herein, 39 selected compounds, featuring both of these traits in the same molecule, are profiled. The total synthesis, source of the corresponding amino acids and fluorinated residues, and medicinal chemistry aspects and biological properties of the molecules are discussed.

Immobilization of enzymes by multilayer microcapsules

A method is described to obtain a new type of microcapsules for immobilization of enzymes or living cells. The wall of these capsules consists of several layers of poly(ethyleneimine) and poly(acrylic acid).
