Control of powdery mildew in cut roses using natural products in the greenhouse.

2009

Roses grown under greenhouse cultivation are commonly affected by diseases and regular fungicide applications are commonly used. The aim of this research was to identify natural products that can substitute and reduce the health and environmental impacts of typical chemical treatments in the control of powdery mildew [(Podosphaera pannosa (Wallr. Fr.) de Bary] and grey mould (Botrytis cinerea Pers.). Treatments were applied in the greenhouse on the cut rose cultivars Sunluck (Gold Strike®) and Nirpbredy (New Fashion®) growing in a soilless system. Oregano and clove essential oil at 0.5 ml/l (an emulsifier was added) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) at 4 g/l were sprayed on rose plants to run…

Predicting effective aquaculture in subtropical waters: A dynamic energy budget model for the green lipped mussel, Perna viridis

2018

Abstract The green lipped mussel, Perna viridis, is an important aquaculture species throughout the Indo-Pacific region where production is often impacted by environmental degradation. To predict the impacts and mitigate against environmental problems due to various kinds of anthropogenic pollution, such as heavy metals and eutrophication, on P. viridis aquaculture a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model was constructed. By integrating species-specific parameters and regional-specific environmental data the DEB model determined how the life history traits of P. viridis respond to changing environmental conditions. Using various levels of basal maintenance costs and food availability to elucidat…

Ecological risk assessment of agricultural soils for the definition of soil screening values: A comparison between substance-based and matrix-based a…

2017

The Italian legislation on contaminated soils does not include the Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) and this deficiency has important consequences for the sustainable management of agricultural soils. The present research compares the results of two ERA procedures applied to agriculture (i) one based on the “substance-based” approach and (ii) a second based on the “matrix-based” approach. In the former the soil screening values (SVs) for individual substances were derived according to institutional foreign guidelines. In the latter, the SVs characterizing the whole-matrix were derived originally by the authors by means of experimental activity.\ud \ud \ud The results indicate that the “matr…

Stable isotopes and trophic positions of littoral fishes from a Mediterranean Marine Protected Area

2008

Stable isotope analyses were employed to explore feeding and foraging habitats and trophic levels of littoral fishes in a western Mediterranean Marine Protected Area (Egadi Islands, Sicily, Italy). Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were measured in primary producers, invertebrates and fishes collected in December 2001 and January 2002. Fishes of the littoral region of the Egadi Islands had isotopic signatures that fell into a wider range for δ13C (about 6‰) than for δ15N (about 3‰). Carbon isotope ratios were consistent with a food web based on mixed sources and two trophic pathways leading to different fish species. Differences in the isotopic composition between islands were highe…

Electronic Health Record in Italy and Personal Data Protection.

2016

The present article deals with the Italian Electronic Health Record (hereinafter ehr), recently introduced by Act 221/2012, with a specific focus on personal data protection. Privacy issues — e.g., informed consent, data processing, patients’ rights and minors’ will — are discussed within the framework of recent e-Health legislation, national Data Protection Code, the related Data Protection Authority pronouncements and eu law. The paper is aimed at discussing the problems arising from a complex, fragmentary and sometimes uncertain legal framework on e-Health.

Greenhouse gases from membrane bioreactors: a pilot plant case study

2015

In this study the N2O emitted from the aerobic and anoxic tank of a Sequential Batch (SB) Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant has been investigated. The SB-MBR pilot plant was fed with a mixture of synthetic and real wastewater. The influence of salinity on N2O concentration was analyzed by gradually increasing the salinity by addition of salt to concentrations ranging from 0 to 10 gNaCl L-1. The results demonstrated that the N2O concentration of the gaseous samples was strongly influenced by the salinity in the range of 0.25 ppm to 3.4 ppm salinity. This result was explained by lower autotrophic kinetics due to the biomass lysis. Dissolved oxygen concentration and salinity were found to …

Infrastructure, Tariff and Legal Action: How to Achieve a Climate-Friendly Transport System

2011

Transportation absorbs about 70% of oil consumption in EU countries. The fuels that burn in the field of transport are composed of 96% of oil. Energy efficiency of road and air traffic must also be improved. But transport environmental impacts reductions should be made necessarily through a transfer of traffic from the car, lorries and aircraft to train, ship, and non motorized two-wheelers into the EU cities. In fact the former are large producers of greenhouse gases, while the latter are more environmentally friendly means of transport in climate. Reaching an annual increase of 1% of the modal split in favour of more sustainable means of transport on the environment must be set as a goal …

Aspetti geotecnici e marittimi di due interventi di difesa costiera

2022

Two case-histories of the design of submerged breakwaters for coast protection are shortly reported in the paper. The first one refers to the stabilisation and protection works of the sand beach of S.Alessio Siculo village, in Sicily, that suffered severe erosion triggered, some forty years ago, by the construction along the shoreline of a vertical seawall in lieu of the pre-existing sand-dune system. As a consequence, long stretches of the seawall were undermined and collapsed, and the beach almost disappeared. A submerged breakwater was built to reduce the inten-sity of wave attack, the seawall was rebuilt where necessary and provided with a rock revetment at the toe, and then a “perched”…

Seismic response of steel frames with reduced beam sections

2003

This study concerns the effectiveness of weakening on the beams of fully and partially restrained connection steel frames in order to locate plastic hinges far from the joints. Two types of non-linear analysis, for geometry and constitutive law are developed: static pushover analysis, in which the structure is subjected to constant vertical loads and to horizontal loads linearly increasing up to collapse; and incremental dynamic analysis, in which the structure is subjected to uniformly scaled ground motions. Applications for four-bay frames with three and nine stories designed according to the EC3 code and for Italian 1st-category seismic areas are developed in order to evaluate the influe…

Sine cura.

Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E UrbanaThe essay questions the future's possibilities to operate on the buildings of the second half of the twentieth century according to the Italian Code of Cultural Heritage (2004-2011). When arguing how to encourage the re-use of these artifacts which are often marked by short-life technology cycles obsolescence and abandonment the ambiguities and inconsistencies of current legislative procedures deeply stress the cultural role of research experiences that use project-oriented methodologies. The comparison between some Italian and other European cases highlights the role of a design approach in the construction of a transformative protection perspective for the built matter of the second half of the twentieth century. In a framework aiming to encourage a reconciliation between the recent built environment and the new paradigms of sustainability and circular economy architecture must recognize re-cycle practices as a main theoretical and procedural node. To modernize the late Modern built environment with contemporary construction components is not simply a matter of technical knowledge and expertise: but a theme with theoretical density aesthetic and ethical values. The architectural project in this field today must ask for greater congruence between the bureaucratic and administrative levels and the real consistency of this corpus. It is a matter of identifying strategies to equip it with capabilities meanings and contents remembering that demolition wastes have unsustainable environmental costs and uncertain results concerning the necessary new attribution of political and semantic meaning that these places await.
