Search for excited electrons and muons in root s=8 TeV proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector
2013
The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to search for excited electrons and excited muons in the channel pp → ℓℓ* → ℓℓγ, assuming that excited leptons are produced via contact interactions. The analysis is based on 13 fb[superscript −1] of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. No evidence for excited leptons is found, and a limit is set at the 95% credibility level on the cross section times branching ratio as a function of the excited-lepton mass m[subscript ℓ*]. For m[subscript ℓ*] ≥ 0.8 TeV, the respective upper limits on σB(ℓ* → ℓγ) are 0.75 and 0.90 fb for the e* and μ* searches. Limits on σB are converted into lower bounds on the compositeness scale Λ. Adherence to international guidelines for the management of Helicobacter pylori infection among gastroenterologists and gastroenterology fellows in I…
2021
Background: Information on the management of Helicobacter (H.) pylori infection by gastroenterologists and gastroenterology fellows are scarce. We aimed to assess practice of gastroenterologists and gastroenterology fellows and their adherence to guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of H. pylori infection in Italy. Materials and Methods: All gastroenterologists and gastroenterology fellows attending the National Congress of Digestive Diseases - FISMAD were invited to fill-in an on-line questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions on the diagnosis and treatment of H. pylori infection. Results: A total of 279 gastroenterologists and 61 gastroenterology fellows participated to the stu…
Relativistic coupled cluster calculations of the electronic structure of KrH+, XeH+ and RnH+
2012
Potential energy curves of NgH+ cations (Ng = Kr, Xe, Rn) were obtained by using four-component relativistic CCSD(T) coupled cluster calculations. Dissociation energies, equilibrium bond lengths, electronic properties, such as dipole moments and electric field gradients at the nuclei, and the related spectroscopic parameters of the electronic ground state have been determined. The results obtained for KrH+ and XeH+ are in good agreement with available experimental data, while those for RnH+ have been determined for the first time at this level of theory.
The Proton-Boron Reaction Increases the Radiobiological Effectiveness of Clinical Low- and High-Energy Proton Beams: Novel Experimental Evidence and …
2021
Protontherapy is a rapidly expanding radiotherapy modality where accelerated proton beams are used to precisely deliver the dose to the tumor target but is generally considered ineffective against radioresistant tumors. Proton-Boron Capture Therapy (PBCT) is a novel approach aimed at enhancing proton biological effectiveness. PBCT exploits a nuclear fusion reaction between low-energy protons and 11B atoms, i.e. p+11B→ 3α (p-B), which is supposed to produce highly-DNA damaging α-particles exclusively across the tumor-conformed Spread-Out Bragg Peak (SOBP), without harming healthy tissues in the beam entrance channel. To confirm previous work on PBCT, here we report new in-vitro data obtained…
Cloning, purification, and nucleotide-binding traits of the catalytic subunit A of the V1VO ATPase from Aedes albopictus.
2007
The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is commonly infected by the gregarine parasite Ascogregarina taiwanensis, which develops extracellularly in the midgut of infected larvae. The intracellular trophozoites are usually confined within a parasitophorous vacuole, whose acidification is generated and controlled by the V(1)V(O) ATPase. This proton pump is driven by ATP hydrolysis, catalyzed inside the major subunit A. The subunit A encoding gene of the Aedes albopictus V(1)V(O) ATPase was cloned in pET9d1-His(3) and the recombinant protein, expressed in the Escherichia coli Rosetta 2 (DE3) strain, purified by immobilized metal affinity- and ion-exchange chromatography. The purified prote…
Protonic ceramic fuel cell : elaboration and characterization. Investigation of the BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-d electrolyte by electrochemical impedance spectros…
2021
One of the current global challenges is to find novel, clean and efficient techniques for the energy production. The use of electrochemical cells and hydrogen is one of the solutions. These cells convert the excess energy produced by conventional systems into hydrogen by steam electrolysis. The hydrogen can be stored and transformed into electricity when needed in the fuel cell mode. Among the different electrochemical cells, protonic ceramic electrochemical cells have attracted much attention due to their high efficiency at intermediate temperature (400 – 600 °C). In addition, these systems offer the advantage of not diluting the fuel in electrolysis mode. This thesis work focuses on the e…
Enhanced β-turn conformational stability of tripeptides containing Δphe in cis over trans configuration
2013
Conformations of three pairs of dehydropeptides with the opposite configuration of the Delta Phe residue, Boc-Gly-Delta(Z/E)Phe-Phe-p-NA (Z- p -NA and E- p -NA), Boc-Gly-Delta(Z/E)Phe-Phe-OMe (Z-OMe and E-OMe), and Boc-Gly-Delta(Z/E)Phe-Phe-OH (Z-OH and E-OH) were compared on the basis of CD and NMR studies in MeOH, TFE, and DMSO. The CD results were used as the additional input data for the NMR-based calculations of the detailed solution conformations of the peptides. It was found that Z- p -NA, E- p -NA, Z-OMe, and Z-OH adopt the beta-turn conformations and E-OMe and E-OH are unordered. There are two overlapping type III beta-turns in Z- p -NA, type II' beta-turn in E- p -NA, and type II …
Measurement of the inelastic proton-proton cross-section at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
2011
The dependence of the rate of proton–proton interactions on the centre-of-mass collision energy, √s, is of fundamental importance for both hadron collider physics and particle astrophysics. The dependence cannot yet be calculated from first principles; therefore, experimental measurements are needed. Here we present the first measurement of the inelastic proton–proton interaction cross-section at a centre-of-mass energy, √s, of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected by requiring hits on scintillation counters mounted in the forward region of the detector. An inelastic cross-section of 60.3±2.1 mb is measured for ξ>5×10[superscript −6], where ξ is ca…

Interaction risk with proton pump inhibitors in general practice: significant disagreement between different drug-related information sources.
2006
Aims To compare information on drug–drug interactions (DDIs) reported on two standard drug-related information sources (Summary of Product Characteristics and Drugdex system by Micromedex), by assessing the prevalence and predictors of potential DDI with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in general practice. Methods From the ‘Caserta-1’ Local Health-Service database, 156 general practitioners (GPs) were recruited. From more than 180 000 individuals registered on their lists, we selected patients receiving co-prescription of PPI and medications at interaction risk, according to the Italian Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) of PPI and Drugdex information, during the year 2003. Thereafter, …
