Predictions for low-pTand high-pThadron spectra in nearly central Pb+Pb collisions atsNN=5.5TeV tested atsNN=130and 200 GeV
2005
We study the hadron spectra in nearly central $A+A$ collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in a broad transverse momentum range. We cover the low-${p}_{T}$ spectra using longitudinally boost-invariant hydrodynamics with initial energy and net-baryon number densities from the perturbative QCD (pQCD)+saturation model. Buildup of the transverse flow and sensitivity of the spectra to a single decoupling temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{dec}}$ are studied. Comparison with RHIC data at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathit{NN}}}=130$ and 200 GeV suggests a rather high value ${T}_{\mathrm{dec}}=150$ MeV. The high-${p}_{T}$ spectra are computed using factorized pQCD cro…
Measurements of inclusive W+jets production rates as a function of jet transverse momentum in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV
2011
This Letter describes measurements of inclusive W (--> e nu) + n jet cross sections (n = 1-4), presented as total inclusive cross sections and differentially in the nth jet transverse momentum. The measurements are made using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb-1 collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and achieve considerably smaller uncertainties on W +jets production cross sections than previous measurements. The measurements are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations in the n =1-3 jet multiplicity bins and to leading order pQCD calculations in the 4-jet bin. The measurements are generally in agreement with pQCD…
Measurement of angular correlations of jets at s=1.96 TeV and determination of the strong coupling at high momentum transfers
2012
We present a measurement of the average value of a new observable at hadron colliders that is sensitive to QCD dynamics and to the strong coupling constant, while being only weakly sensitive to parton distribution functions. The observable measures the angular correlations of jets and is defined as the number of neighboring jets above a given transverse momentum threshold which accompany a given jet within a given distance Delta-R in the plane of rapidity and azimuthal angle. The ensemble average over all jets in an inclusive jet sample is measured and the results are presented as a function of transverse momentum of the inclusive jets, in different regions of Delta-R and for different tran…
The lowest-lying baryon masses in covariant SU(3)-flavor chiral perturbation theory
2010
We present an analysis of the baryon-octet and -decuplet masses using covariant SU(3)-flavor chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order. Besides the description of the physical masses we address the problem of the lattice QCD extrapolation. Using the PACS-CS Collaboration data we show that a good description of the lattice points can be achieved at next-to-leading order with the covariant loop amplitudes and phenomenologically determined values for the meson-baryon couplings. Moreover, the extrapolation to the physical point up to this order is found to be better than the linear one given at leading-order by the Gell-Mann-Okubo approach. The importance that a reliable combinatio…
Confronting QCD with the experimental hadronic spectral functions from tau-decay
2009
The (non-strange) vector and axial-vector spectral functions extracted from $\tau $-decay by the ALEPH collaboration are confronted with QCD in the framework of a Finite Energy QCD sum rule (FESR) involving a polynomial kernel tuned to suppress the region beyond the kinematical end point where there is no longer data. This effectively allows for a QCD FESR analysis to be performed beyond the region of the existing data. Results show excellent agreement between data and perturbative QCD in the remarkably wide energy range $s = 3 - 10 {GeV}^2$, leaving room for a dimension $d$ =4 vacuum condensate consistent with values in the literature. A hypothetical dimension $d$=2 term in the Operator Pr…
Chiral sum rules and duality in QCD
1998
The ALEPH data on the vector and axial-vector spectral functions, extracted from tau-lepton decays is used in order to test local and global duality, as well as a set of four QCD chiral sum rules. These are the Das-Mathur-Okubo sum rule, the first and second Weinberg sum rules, and a relation for the electromagnetic pion mass difference. We find these sum rules to be poorly saturated, even when the upper limit in the dispersion integrals is as high as $3 GeV^{2}$. Since perturbative QCD, plus condensates, is expected to be valid for $|q^{2}| \geq \cal{O}$$(1 GeV^{2})$ in the whole complex energy plane, except in the vicinity of the right hand cut, we propose a modified set of sum rules with…
Spectrum of the QCD flux tube in 3d SU(2) lattice gauge theory
2009
Abstract Evidence from the lattice suggests that formation of a flux tube between a q q ¯ pair in the QCD vacuum leads to quark confinement. For large separations between the quarks, it is conjectured that the flux tube has a behavior similar to an oscillating bosonic string, supported by lattice data for the groundstate q q ¯ potential. We measure the excited states of the flux tube in 3d SU ( 2 ) gauge theory with three different couplings inside the scaling region. We compare our results to predictions of effective string theories.
Measurement of Z/γ∗+jet+X angular distributions in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV
2010
We present the first measurements at a hadron collider of differential cross sections for Z+jet+X production in delta phi(Z, jet), |delta y(Z, jet)| and |y_boost(Z, jet)|. Vector boson production in association with jets is an excellent probe of QCD and constitutes the main background to many small cross section processes, such as associated Higgs production. These measurements are crucial tests of the predictions of perturbative QCD and current event generators, which have varied success in describing the data. Using these measurements as inputs in tuning event generators will increase the experimental sensitivity to rare signals.
Measurement of three-jet differential cross sections dσ3jet/dM3jet in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV
2011
We present the first measurement of the inclusive three-jet differential cross section as a function of the invariant mass of the three jets with the largest transverse momenta in an event in p anti-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The measurement is made in different rapidity regions and for different jet transverse momentum requirements and is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 fb^{-1} collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The results are used to test the three-jet matrix elements in perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant. The data allow discrimination between parametrizations …
Neutral pion and η meson production in proton–proton collisions at s=0.9 TeV and s=7 TeV
2012
The first measurements of the invariant differential cross sections of inclusive pi(0) and eta meson production at mid-rapidity in proton-proton collisions root s = 0.9 TeV and root s = 7 TeV are reported. The pi(0) measurement covers the ranges 0.4 < p(T) < 7 GeV/c and 0.3 < p(T) < 25 GeV/c for these two energies, respectively. The production of eta mesons was measured at root s = 7 TeV in the range 0.4 < p(T) < 15 GeV/c. Next-to-Leading Order perturbative QCD calculations, which are consistent with the pi(0) spectrum at root s = 0.9 TeV, overestimate those of pi(0) and eta mesons at root s = 7 TeV, but agree with the measured eta/pi(0) ratio at root s = 7 TeV.
