The pinch technique at two loops

1999

It is shown that the fundamental properties of gauge-independence, gauge-invariance, unitarity, and analyticity of the $S$-matrix lead to the unambiguous generalization of the pinch technique algorithm to two loops.

Algebraic Quantization, Good Operators and Fractional Quantum Numbers

1995

The problems arising when quantizing systems with periodic boundary conditions are analysed, in an algebraic (group-) quantization scheme, and the ``failure" of the Ehrenfest theorem is clarified in terms of the already defined notion of {\it good} (and {\it bad}) operators. The analysis of ``constrained" Heisenberg-Weyl groups according to this quantization scheme reveals the possibility for new quantum (fractional) numbers extending those allowed for Chern classes in traditional Geometric Quantization. This study is illustrated with the examples of the free particle on the circumference and the charged particle in a homogeneous magnetic field on the torus, both examples featuring ``anomal…

Star Products on Coadjoint Orbits

2000

We study properties of a family of algebraic star products defined on coadjoint orbits of semisimple Lie groups. We connect this description with the point of view of differentiable deformations and geometric quantization.

Local BRST cohomology in gauge theories

2000

The general solution of the anomaly consistency condition (Wess-Zumino equation) has been found recently for Yang-Mills gauge theory. The general form of the counterterms arising in the renormalization of gauge invariant operators (Kluberg-Stern and Zuber conjecture) and in gauge theories of the Yang-Mills type with non power counting renormalizable couplings has also been worked out in any number of spacetime dimensions. This Physics Report is devoted to reviewing in a self-contained manner these results and their proofs. This involves computing cohomology groups of the differential introduced by Becchi, Rouet, Stora and Tyutin, with the sources of the BRST variations of the fields ("antif…

Quantum cosmological approach to 2d dilaton gravity

1993

We study the canonical quantization of the induced 2d-gravity and the pure gravity CGHS-model on a closed spatial section. The Wheeler-DeWitt equations are solved in (spatially homogeneous) choices of the internal time variable and the space of solutions is properly truncated to provide the physical Hilbert space. We establish the quantum equivalence of both models and relate the results with the covariant phase-space quantization. We also discuss the relation between the quantum wavefunctions and the classical space-time solutions and propose the wave function representing the ground state.

Coordinate-free quantization of first-class constrained systems

1996

The coordinate-free formulation of canonical quantization, achieved by a flat-space Brownian motion regularization of phase-space path integrals, is extended to a special class of closed first-class constrained systems that is broad enough to include Yang-Mills type theories with an arbitrary compact gauge group. Central to this extension are the use of coherent state path integrals and of Lagrange multiplier integrations that engender projection operators onto the subspace of gauge invariant states.

Do metric independent classical actions lead to topological field theories?

1991

Abstract We investigate the quantum theory of non-abelian BF -systems (gauge theories with the classical metric independent action ∫ tr BF A ). The fact that due to a complicated (on-shell reducible) gauge structure the quantum action of these theories does not differ only by a BRST commutator from the classical action, and that moreover the BRST operator turns out to be metric dependent, renders the standard arguments for metric independence inapplicable. We establish the topological nature of these models and argue that in gauge theories the information on gauge invariance is contained entirely in the metric independent part of the BRST operator. We make some general remarks on the relati…

Supersymmetric particle model with additional bosonic coordinates

1986

A new supersymmetric particle model in enlarged superspace with additional bosonic coordinateszij,\(\bar z_{ij} \) (zij=−zji;i=1...N, N even) canonically conjugated to central charges is quantized. The superwave functions which are obtained through first quantization are the free superfields on the enlarged superspace\((x^\mu , \theta _{\alpha i} , \bar \theta _i^{\dot \alpha } , z_{ij} , \bar z_{ij} )\). Two particular cases (N=2 with one additional complex bosonic coordinate andN=8 with seven additional real coordinates) are considered in more detail.

Electronic Processes in Solid State: Dirac Framework

2019

The present paper proposes canonical Dirac framework adapted for application to the electronic processes in solid state. The concern is a spatially periodic structure of atoms distinguished by birth and annihilation of particle states excited due to interaction with the electromagnetic field. This implies replacing the conventional energy-momentum relation specific of the canonical Dirac framework and permissible for particle physics by a case specific relation available for the solid state. The advancement is a unified and consistent mathematical framework incorporating the Hilbert space, the quantum field, and the special relativity. Essential details of the birth and annihilation of the …
