Raman spectroscopy as a tool for ecology and evolution.
2017
7 pages; International audience; Scientists are always on the lookout for new modalities of information which could reveal new biological features that are useful for deciphering the complexity of biological systems. Here, we introduce Raman spectroscopy as a prime candidate for ecology and evolution. To encourage the integration of this microscopy technique in the field of ecology and evolution, it is crucial to discuss first how Raman spectroscopy fits within the conceptual, technical and pragmatic considerations of ecology and evolution. In this paper, we show that the spectral information holds reliable indicators of intra- and interspecies variations, which can be related to the enviro…
Advanced fluorescence technologies help to resolve long-standing questions about microbial vitality
2012
International audience; Advances in fundamental physical and optical principles applied to novel fluorescence methods are currently resulting in rapid progress in cell biology and physiology. Instrumentation devised in pioneering laboratories is becoming commercially available, and study findings are now becoming accessible. The first results have concerned mainly higher eukaryotic cells but many more developments can be expected, especially in microbiology. Until now, some important problems of cell physiology have been difficult to investigate due to interactions between probes and cells, excretion of probes from cells and the inability to make in situ observations deep within the cell, w…
A Universal Length-Dependent Vibrational Mode in Graphene Nanoribbons
2019
Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have attracted considerable interest as their atomically tunable structure makes them promising candidates for future electronic devices. However, obtaining detailed information about the length of GNRs has been challenging and typically relies on low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Such methods are ill-suited for practical device application and characterization. In contrast, Raman spectroscopy is a sensitive method for the characterization of GNRs, in particular for investigating their width and structure. Here, we report on a length-dependent, Raman active low-energy vibrational mode that is present in atomically precise, bottom-up synthesized armch…
Characterization of Magnetic-Plasmonic Compounds by means of Raman spectroscopy
2017
Structural and Dynamic Properties of the Homodimeric Hemoglobin from Scapharca inaequivalvis Thr-72→Ile Mutant: Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Low Te…
1998
AbstractMolecular dynamics simulations, low temperature visible absorption spectroscopy, and resonance Raman spectroscopy have been performed on a mutant of the Scapharca inaequivalvis homodimeric hemoglobin, where residue threonine 72, at the subunit interface, has been substituted by isoleucine. Molecular dynamics simulation indicates that in the Thr-72→Ile mutant several residues that have been shown to play a role in ligand binding fluctuate around orientations and distances similar to those observed in the x-ray structure of the CO derivative of the native hemoglobin, although the overall structure remains in the T state. Visible absorption spectroscopy data indicate that in the deoxy …
On-Capillary Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy: Determination of Glutathione in Whole Blood Microsamples.
2018
Oxidative stress monitoring in the neonatal period supports early outcome prediction and treatment. Glutathione (GSH) is the most abundant antioxidant in most cells and tissues, including whole blood, and its usefulness as a biomarker has been known for decades. To date, the available methods for GSH determination require laborious sample processing and the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment. To the best of our knowledge, no tools suitable for point-of-care (POC) sensing have been reported. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), performed in a microvolume capillary measurement cell, is proposed in this study as a robust approach for the quantification of GSH in human whole blood…
In vivo endomicroscopy improves detection of Barrett’s esophagus–related neoplasia: a multicenter international randomized controlled trial
2013
Background Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) enables in vivo microscopic imaging of the GI tract mucosa. However, there are limited data on endoscope-based CLE (eCLE) for imaging Barrett's esophagus (BE). Objective To compare high-definition white-light endoscopy (HDWLE) alone with random biopsy (RB) and HDWLE + eCLE and targeted biopsy (TB) for diagnosis of BE neoplasia. Design Multicenter, randomized, controlled trial. Setting Academic medical centers. Patients Adult patients with BE undergoing routine surveillance or referred for early neoplasia. Intervention Patients were randomized to HDWLE + RB (group 1) or HDWLE + eCLE + TB (group 2). Real-time diagnoses and management plans were r…
2011
This thesis deals with extremes statistics which has become an attractive subject in optics since a comparison with oceanic rogue waves has been proposed at the end of 2007. We report some potential mechanisms stimulating the rogue wave formation in the context of guided propagation of light in optical fibers. In a first part, we explore optical rogue waves in supercontinuums generated by fourth-order modulation instability and we propose a stabilization method based on the use of two continuous seeds. Then, we present a detailed study on Raman fiber amplifiers where we determine the conditions of emergence of giant structures : in presence of a partially incoherent pumping wave, a quasi-in…
Decoding vibrational states of Concanavalin A amyloid fibrils.
2015
International audience; Amyloid and amyloid-like fibrils are a general class of protein aggregates and represent a central topic in life sciences for their involvement in several neurodegenerative disorders and their unique mechanical and supramolecular morphological properties. Both their biological role and their physical properties, including their high mechanical stability and thermodynamic inertia, are related to the structural arrangement of proteins in the aggregates at molecular level. Significant variations may exist in the supramolecular organization of the commonly termed cross-β structure that constitutes the amyloid core. In this context, a fine knowledge of the structural deta…
