Effectiveness of Mirror Therapy for Subacute Stroke in Relation to Chosen Factors.
2016
Purpose The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of mirror therapy (MT) combined with comprehensive treatment and to investigate the possible relationships of functional state. Design Prospective, controlled trial of 60 stroke inpatients. Methods The Functional Index "Repty" (FIR) was an outcome measure to assess changes of independence in daily activities. The Frenchay Arm Test (FAT) and Motor Status Score were outcome measures to assess changes in hand function. Findings The analysis of pre- and posttest data indicated a significant improvement in hand function ([INCREMENT]FAT in the Mirror group p = .035, N = 30). Age factor indicated a significant change in relation to F…
Age-related variation in mobility independence among wheelchair users with spinal cord injury: A cross-sectional study
2016
To evaluate age-related variation in mobility independence among community-living wheelchair users with spinal cord injury (SCI).Community Survey (2011-2013) as part of the Swiss Spinal Cord Injury Cohort Study.Community.Individuals aged 16 years or older with traumatic or non-traumatic SCI permanently residing in Switzerland and using a wheelchair for moving around moderate distances (10-100 m).Not applicable.Mobility-related items of the Spinal Cord Independence Measure-Self Report were matched to the three principal domains "changing basic body position," "transferring oneself" and "moving around." Binary outcomes ("independence" vs. "no independence") were created for every domain and a…
Comorbidity and physical activity in people with paraplegia: a descriptive cross-sectional study.
2017
Descriptive cross-sectional study. The study was conducted in the Spinal Cord Injury Unit of the University Vall d’Hebron Hospital and in the Physical Education and Sports Department of the University of Valencia. The aim of this study was to quantify the presence of comorbidities in spinal cord injury (SCI) subjects who did or did not perform regular physical activity (PA) and to identify the relationship between PA and the level of comorbidity. The sample consisted of patients with complete motor SCI (T2–T12), who were fitted with an accelerometer attached to the non-dominant wrist for a period of 1 week. The clinical and blood analytic variables were selected by an expert panel. In the e…
Cross-sectional study of quadriceps properties and postural stability in patients with chronic stroke and limited vs. non-limited community ambulatio…
2019
Background: Changes in the paretic-side metabolism post-stroke and quadriceps muscle mechanical properties favour muscle wasting, affecting postural instability and walking impairment. Further clar...
Symmetry function in gait pattern analysis in patients after unilateral transfemoral amputation using a mechanical or microprocessor prosthetic knee
2021
AbstractBackgroundAbove-knee amputations (AKAs) contribute to gait asymmetry. The level of asymmetry is affected by the type of knee prosthetic module. There is limited evidence suggesting that more technically advanced solutions (microprocessor modules; MicPK) are superior to less advanced ones (mechanical modules; MechPK). The study aimed to evaluate the variable range of hip and pelvic joint movements during gait and look for differentiating areas with an increased level of asymmetry of the gait cycle in individuals who underwent an AKA and are equipped with MicPK or MechPK.MethodsTwenty-eight individuals participated in the study; 14 were assigned to a study group of individuals who und…
Therapeutic role of music listening in stroke rehabilitation.
2009
We performed two parallel interview studies of stroke patients (n= 20) and professional nurses (n= 5) to gain more insight into the therapeutic role of music listening in stroke rehabilitation. Results suggest that music listening can be used to relax, improve mood, and provide both physical and mental activation during the early stages of recovery from stroke. Thus, music listening could provide a useful clinical tool in stroke rehabilitation.
Validity, reliability, and sensitivity to motor impairment severity of a multi-touch app designed to assess hand mobility, coordination, and function…
2021
[EN] Background: The assessment of upper-limb motor impairments after stroke is usually performed using clinical scales and tests, which may lack accuracy and specificity and be biased. Although some instruments exist that are capable of evaluating hand functions and grasping during functional tasks, hand mobility and dexterity are generally either not specifically considered during clinical assessments or these examinations lack accuracy. This study aimed to determine the convergent validity, reliability, and sensitivity to impairment severity after a stroke of a dedicated, multi-touch app, named the Hand Assessment Test. Methods: The hand mobility, coordination, and function of 88 individ…
Accelerometer assessment of physical activity in individuals with paraplegia who do and do not participate in physical exercise
2018
OBJECTIVE: Our main goal was to measure physical activity (PA) in people with paraplegia. Secondarily, we aimed to establish the relationship between being engaged in physical exercise (PE) and reaching the recommended moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) level. We further analyzed the effect of being engaged in PE on the PA levels. DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional. SETTING: Spanish associations for individuals with spinal cord injury. PARTICIPANTS: Ninety-six manual wheelchair users with chronic paraplegia. INTERVENTIONS: Participants wore a wrist accelerometer for one week. OUTCOME MEASURES: Levels of PA and sedentary behavior. In addition, participants were classified into tw…
An experimental controlled study on postural sway and therapeutic exercise in subjects with low back pain.
2000
Objectives: To describe postural sway and its associations to background factors, low back pain and functional capacity. To evaluate the changes in postural sway after three months of therapeutic exercise in the gym or at home. Design: A one-year randomized experimental trial evaluated postural sway in three study groups: intensive training, home exercise and control group. Setting: Subjects were recruited from seven local occupational health care centres in Central Finland and were examined at Central Finland Hospital by medical doctors. Measurements and therapeutic exercise programmes were carried out in the Research Laboratory of Sport and Health Sciences at Jyväskylä University. Subjec…
Intra and inter-raters reliability and agreement of stimulus electrodiagnostic tests with two different electrodes in sedated critically-ill patients
2019
Objective: The aim of the present study was to verify the intra- and inter-rater reliability and agreement of the stimulus electrodiagnostic test (SET) measurements obtained by pen and square elect...
