Recovery and genotyping ancient Sicilian monumental olive trees
2023
The long-lived and evergreen olive tree dominates the Mediterranean landscape, representing an agroecological and cultural symbol and a genetic heritage of inestimable value. Sicily, for historical, geographical, and cultural reasons, has a very rich and distinctive olive germplasm. In this work, a large survey was conducted to discover, collect, and characterize the genetic diversity of centennial monumental olive trees from historical sites, such as the Greek Temple Valley (Agrigento), ancient gardens, or farmland present in the western part of the island. Trees were chosen based on their height, trunk, stump size, and presumed age; particularly, only olive trees with an age estimated at …
Resilienza delle foreste Mediterranee ai cambiamenti climatici - Guida al progetto [Resilience of Mediterranean forests to climate change – Project g…
2017
The overall objective of the project LIFE11+ ENV/IT/000215 RESILFORMED – Resilience of Mediterranean forests to climate change is to preserve the forest systems from the risks due to climate change, through naturalization processes, increased biodiversity and improved responsiveness, in the recovery process, coming from destabilizing events. The specific objective is to implement a regional forest policy able to increase resilience capacity of Sicilian forests, improving their ecosystem capacity and fostering the biodiversity preservation. The project has proposed to pursue five concrete results: 1) drafting guidelines for effective Mediterranean forest management with respect to climate ch…
Project LIFE11 ENV/IT/0002215 ResilForMed - Resilience of Mediterranean Forests to Climate Change
2017
Forest and pre-forest ecosystems of Sicily are characterized by a high structural simplification and fragility, reduced species diversity, high density, pest and diseases that are expected to worsen according to the ongoing anthropogenic climate change. In this work we present the achievements of the project LIFE ResilForMed (Resilience of Mediterranean Forests to climate change), as Sicilian response on adaptation and mitigation to climate change. ResilForMed project is co-funded by the LIFE Initiative (2007-2014) and started June 1st 2012 with an expected conclusion on June 30th 2017. The project consortium involves: (i) the Department of Rural and Land Development of the Sicilian Region,…
Bright spots as climate‐smart marine spatial planning tools for conservation and blue growth
2021
Marine spatial planning that addresses ocean climate-driven change (‘climate-smart MSP’) is a global aspiration to support economic growth, food security and ecosystem sustainability. Ocean climate change (‘CC’) modelling may become a key decision-support tool for MSP, but traditional modelling analysis and communication challenges prevent their broad uptake. We employed MSP-specific ocean climate modelling analyses to inform a real-life MSP process; addressing how nature conservation and fisheries could be adapted to CC. We found that the currently planned distribution of these activities may become unsustainable during the policy's implementation due to CC, leading to a shortfall in its s…
The transformation of agricultural systems into agro-forestry systems as a system of adaptation to climate and economic changes: some Sicilian case s…
2021
Many traditional agricultural systems show different limits both in ecological and economic terms. These limits are exacerbated by the increasingly extreme climatic conditions which in the southern regions are manifested essentially in a concentration of rainfall and in increasingly intense dry periods. As part of the LIFE (Desert Adapt) project, some companies involved in the project are modifying their cultivation systems without changing the land use destination. This appears possible by introducing elements of diversification which make the system more resilient as a whole but which guarantees safer economic resources. In particular, in the case of a "classic" agricultural company Calta…

The role of natural complexity in adaptive architecture : Eco-based design: Nature as pattern and architecture element
2021
In the broader context of an ongoing doctoral research, it is possible to consider adaptive architecture as a possible solution for designing resilience. Despite the large use of technology, it is possible in fact to recognise different design approaches that involve Nature in the whole process, from the initial conceptual phase toward the effective construction stage. Among these different ways, which underline a biomorphic common perspective, this paper would focus on two of them, underlying the role of nature in the design approach. The first is referred to the consideration of Nature as a design material and is shown through the projects of the American architectural firm SCAPE, ‘Living…
I caratteri dell'architettura resiliente adattiva. Invarianti compositive del progetto: 1990-2020
2023
The energy crisis of the contemporary city: intelligence, creativity and resilience.
2012
To address the energy crisis afflicting the contemporary city, recovery plans and retraining must mobilize new forms of inte…
Planning the Neocosmopolitan Habitat
2021
Reflecting on cosmopolitanism is a philosophical activity before it is a political, social or—as far as we are concerned—urban planning action. It requires a deep reflection on the meaning of being connected to a place and also to the whole world, of being individuals and also related to a planetary community and to the consequences of our inhabitation of the Earth (and the Cosmos). Nature, like us humans, is not made up of things in and of themselves, but of an entanglement of relationships and events, of evolutionary processes that take place in time and space. And even our cities do not escape this universal law: everything is correlation, flow, openness, vibration. In short, cosmopolita…
