Real-life practice: rapid improvement in itch symptomatology in patients with atopic dermatitis treated with dupilumab
2019
Sir,Atopic dermatitis is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disorder that affects up to 20% of children and 2–5% of the adult population (1). The disease is characterized by erythematous, xeroti...
Fine tuning the management of axial spondyloarthritis
2017
Updated recommendations for the management of axial spondyloarthritis provide a useful framework for physicians treating this disease. However, the guidance on use of biologic therapies and treat-to-target strategies seems to raise more questions than it answers.
Calcified Spinal Meningioma: A Lurking Danger
2017
Tumors of the spine with an intradural location have an incidence ranging from 3 to 10 per 100,000 persons per year, and intradural extramedullary tumors account for two thirds of all intraspinal neoplasms. Among these, spinal meningiomas account for 25%–46% of all spinal cord tumors. They develop from the arachnoid cells that differentiate from neural crest cells and, like cerebral meningioma, they have a slow-growing behavior. Although spinal meningiomas are not uncommon, calcified spinal meningioma is rare in spinal location. Calcified meningioma manifests with extensive matrix and tends to infiltrate the surrounding structures. It exhibits a growth pattern limited by an incompletely dev…
Prognosis of Pain and Physical Functioning in Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
2016
Objective To systematically summarize the literature on the course of pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA), prognostic factors that predict deterioration of pain, the course of physical functioning, and prognostic factors that predict deterioration of physical functioning in persons with knee OA. Methods A search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Psych-INFO, and SPORTDiscus up to January 2014. A meta-analysis and a qualitative data synthesis were performed. Results Of the 58 studies included, 39 were of high quality. High heterogeneity across studies (I(2) >90%) and within study populations (reflected by large SDs of change scores) was found. Therefore, the course of pain a…
Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in the Emergency Department
2020
AbstractThe skin, nerves, and tendons are superficial anatomical structures that can easily be investigated with an ultrasound (US) examination in the emergency department (ED). US evaluation is relatively underused in musculoskeletal evaluation when compared with other emergency applications, such as abdominal trauma, possible aortic aneurysm, and in the cardiovascular system. The aim of this article is to revise the main bone and soft tissue conditions that can be assessed using US in the ED.

Glucosamine sulphate: an umbrella review of health outcomes
2020
Background and Aims:Glucosamine sulphate (GS) can be used as background therapy in people affected by knee osteoarthritis (OA). Knowledge regarding the efficacy and safety of GS is of importance since its use worldwide is increasing. Therefore, the present study aimed to map and grade the diverse health outcomes associated with GS using an umbrella review approach. Methods:Medline, Cinahl and Embase databases were searched until 1 April 2020. An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was carried out. The evidence from the RCTs was graded using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) tool. Results:Fro…
Reduced firing rates of pyramidal cells in frontal cortex of APP/PS1 can be restored by acute treatment with levetiracetam
2019
AbstractIn recent years aberrant neural oscillations in various cortical areas have emerged as a common physiological hallmark across mouse models of amyloid pathology and patients with Alzheimer’s disease. However, much less is known about the underlying effect of amyloid pathology on single cell activity. Here, we used high density silicon probe recordings from frontal cortex area of 9 months old APP/PS1 mice to show that resting state Local Field Potential (LFP) power in the theta and beta band is increased in transgenic animals, while single cell firing rates, specifically of putative pyramidal cells, are significantly reduced. At the same time, these sparsely firing pyramidal cells pha…
Graphic emotion: a critical rhetorical analysis of online children-related charity communication in poland
2019
This study explores dominant applications of graphic affordances in a sample of children-related charity appeals collected from the official websites of nine prominent Polish foundations in late 2016. It provides a systematic description of salient typographic and iconographic resources and an assessment of their rhetorical potential to solicit donations. The analysis focuses on three dominant discursive strategies used by charity communicators, namely how graphic affordances project utility (logos), confidence (ethos) and engagement (pathos). The article offers a critique of strategic emotional stimulation through aestheticized imagery and infantilizing graphics that replace arguments with…
Are we correctly measuring the rotational viscosity of heterogeneous bituminous binders?
2020
Modified bituminous binders allow asphalt technologists to design asphalt mixtures with superior performance. However, several recent studies highlighted that due to the complexity of these material, their characterisation can be challenging since common procedures used to characterise neat bitumen might not be adequate. For instance, during high temperature rotational viscosity testing of recycled tyre rubber modified binders (RTR-MB), a number of changes may occur to the sample leading to the here-defined sample stability which in turn provides misleading results. In this study the authors want to first provide a deeper understanding of this phenomenon by a numerical analysis using a besp…
