Villification: How the Gut Gets Its Villi
2013
Intestinal Villus Formation The intestinal villi are essential elaborations of the lining of the gut that increase the epithelial surface area for nutrient absorption. Shyer et al. (p. 212 , published online 29 August; see the Perspective by Simons ) show that in both the developing human and chick gut, the villi are formed in a step-wise progression, involving the sequential folding of the endoderm into longitudinal ridges, via a zigzag pattern, to finally form individual villi. These changes are established through the differentiation of the smooth muscle layers of the gut, restricting the expansion of the adjacent proliferating and growing endoderm and mesenchyme, generating compressive …
Mapping daily global solar irradiation over Spain: A comparative study of selected approaches
2011
Abstract Three methods to estimate the daily global solar irradiation are compared: the Bristow–Campbell (BC), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Kernel Ridge Regression (KRR). BC is an empirical approach based on air maximum and minimum temperature. ANN and KRR are non-linear approaches that use temperature and precipitation data (which have been selected as the best combination of input data from a gamma test). The experimental dataset includes 4 years (2005–2008) of daily irradiation collected at 40 stations and temperature and precipitation data collected at 400 stations over Spain. Results show that the ANN method produces the best global solar irradiation estimates, with a mean absol…
Multistage Dynamics of International Environmental Agreements: Free-riding from Membership and Compliance*
2009
Abstract In dealing with the multistage dynamics of international environmental agreements (IEAs), it is necessary to analyze the dynamics of global emission level associated with the corresponding abatement process. We model multilateral collaboration among countries as a two-level coalitional game of heterogeneous players with a stepwise emission reduction over a finite and discretized period of time. The formed coalition is assumed to hold a leader's position in the game, and the players that did not join the agreement (free-riders) are assumed to accept a position of the followers. To analyze fulfillment of the emission reduction targets, we construct a time-consistent abatement scheme,…
Tilted implants for the restoration of posterior mandibles with horizontal atrophy: An alternative treatment
2013
Purpose Horizontal atrophy in the posterior mandible presents serious limitations on conventional implant placement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of tilted implants angled in a buccolingual direction for restoring atrophic posterior mandibular sectors. Materials and Methods A cohort study was performed of 25 patients who had partial prostheses supported by more than 1 implant (≥1 tilted and 1 axial implant) to restore molar areas in the mandible. When the bone thickness was at least 5 mm, axial implants were placed; when the alveolar ridge was narrower, the implant was placed with tilted angulation. The beds for these tilted implants were prepared using a lingual approa…
Repercussions of intraalveolar placement of combination of 0.2% chlorhexidine & 10 Mg metronidazole gel on the occurrence of dry sockets- A randomize…
2017
BACKGROUND To evaluate the effects of intraalveolar placement of gel containing 0.2% chlorhexidine and 10gm of metronidazole on the incidence of alveolar osteitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 300 impacted third molars were extracted in 150 patients enrolled in this trial. In each subject a socket was randomly selected and packed to the crest of alveolar ridge with the gel. The contralateral socket was packed with placebo dressing. The occurrence of dry socket was assessed during 3rd and 5th postoperative days .The data was analysed using a meta analytical program. STUDY DESIGN Double blind, prospective, placebo controlled trial. RESULTS The combination of metronidazole + chlorhexidine g…
Understanding melt generation beneath the slow-spreading Kolbeinsey Ridge using 238U, 230Th, and 231Pa excesses
2011
International audience; To examine the petrogenesis and sources of basalts from the Kolbeinsey Ridge, one of the shallowest locations along the global ridge system, we present new measurements of Nd, Sr, Hf, and Pb isotopes and U-series disequilibria on 32 axial basalts. Young Kolbeinsey basalts (full-spreading rate = 1.8 cm/yr; 67 degrees 05'-70 degrees 26'N) display ((230)Th/(238)U) 1 with ((230)Th/(238)U) from 0.95 to 1.30 and have low U (11.3-65.6 ppb) and Th (33.0 ppb-2.40 ppm) concentrations. Except for characteristic isotopic enrichment near the Jan Mayen region, the otherwise depleted Kolbeinsey basalts (e. g. (87)Sr/(86)Sr = 0.70272-0.70301, epsilon(Nd) = 8.4-10.5, epsilon(Hf) = 15…
Le infrastrutture di telecomunicazioni: quale semplificazione amministrativa?
2009
Analisi delle ambivalenze della nozione di semplificazione riferita alle infrastrutture di telecomunicazioni
Open Source without Free-Riding
2012
Considerable investments in Open Source software projects have been made in the last years by competing firms who could have free-ridden on the others' efforts. We identify two properties, one of decreasing returns to knowledge production and the other of preference for differentiated products in a monopolistically competitive market, which explain the phenomenon.
Comparison of the retention strengths of three complete denture adhesives: An in vivo study
2009
One of the main problems posed by complete dentures is retention and stability. In order to solve this problem, dentists and the dental industry for a long time have attempted to improve denture adhesion by developing a range of "glues" of highly varied composition and efficacy. The present in vivo clinical study evaluates whether the adhesives used to improve complete denture retention are truly effective and able to increase denture adhesion to the mucosa covering the edentulous alveolar ridge.of the mandibular dentures. An in vivo clinical study is made of 30 patients with complete mandibular dentures to evaluate the retention afforded by three commercial complete denture adhesives (Benf…
