Gamma-amino butyric acid is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. GABA transporters (GATs) remove GABA from the synaptic cleft. Till now, five distinct GABA transporters have been cloned and termed consecutively GAT1 to GAT4 and vGAT. Nuclear localization of the protein encoded by the Wilms’ tumor gene WT1 in embryonic and adult tissues

ABSTRACT The human Wilms’ tumor gene WT1 encodes a putative transcription factor implicated in tumorigenesis and in specifying normal urogenital development. We have studied the distribution of WT1 protein and mRNA using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. Monoclonal antibodies were raised against a peptide specific to the first alternative splice site of WT1. Two antibodies specifically reacted on Western blot to this WT1 isoform. Immunofluorescence localized WT1 protein to podocytes during mesonephric and metanephric development. Acute polymyositis during treatment of acute hepatitis C with pegylated interferon alpha-2b.

Hepatitis C virus is not cleared after primary infection in 50-85% of subjects exposed to hepatitis C virus. Anti-viral treatment during the early phase of infection significantly enhances the likelihood of a sustained clearance of hepatitis C virus. Although, a variety of autoimmune-related side effects have been observed during interferon therapy for chronic hepatitis, immuno-mediated adverse reactions have not been reported during treatment of acute hepatitis C. An unexpected result arising from a previous characterization of the scarab beetle Bubas bison (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) heterochromatin was its unusual homogeneous reaction to different staining methods. In particular, silver stainability of heterochromatic ends of all chromosomes prevented identification of the number of rDNA transcriptionally active regions. We report a detailed analysis of the expression pattern of the recently identified rat connexin gene, named rat connexin 39 (rCx39), both during embryonic development and in adult life. Qualitative and quantitative reverse transcription/polymerase chain reaction analysis showed intense expression of rCx39 restricted to differentiating skeletal muscles, with a peak of expression detected at 18 days of embryonic life, followed by a rapid decline to undetectable levels within the first week of postnatal life. Novel mutations of CETP gene in Italian subjects with hyeralphalipoproteinemia

Abstract Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is a plasma glycoprotein that catalyses the transfer of cholesteryl esters from HDL to the other plasma lipoproteins. Genetic deficiency of CETP is one of the known causes of elevation of plasma HDL-C (primary hyperalphalipoproteinemia, HALP). We sequenced CETP gene in a group of 24 Italian subjects with primary HALP (HDL-C>80 mg/dl) suspected to have CETP deficiency. Identification of Naïve Hcv-1 Patients with Chronic Hepatitis who may Benefit from Dual Therapy with Peg-Interferon and Ribavirin.

Background & Aims The pool of HCV genotype 1 patients likely to be cured by peg-interferon and ribavirin remains to be quantified. Methods In 1045 patients treated with peg-interferon and ribavirin, two therapeutic strategies were confronted: the first one evaluated only baseline variables associated with sustained virological response (SVR), and the second one included the rapid virologic response (RVR) in addition to baseline predictors. An 80% SVR rate was the threshold to retain a strategy as clinically relevant. Results Overall, 414 patients (39.6%) attained SVR.
