Cambrian–Ordovician magmatism of the Ikh-Mongol Arc System exemplified by the Khantaishir Magmatic Complex (Lake Zone, south–central Mongolia)

2018

Abstract The Khantaishir Magmatic Complex (KMC) (south–central Mongolia) exposes a section of a magmatic system consisting of deep crustal, ultramafic cumulates (coarse-grained Amp gabbros and hornblendites; c. 0.35–0.5 GPa) to shallower crustal levels dominated by Amp–Bt tonalites ( c. 0.1–0.2 GPa). The magmatic rocks were emplaced during most of the Cambrian ( c. 538–495 Ma) and are mostly geochemically primitive (Mg# ~ 50), Na-rich and metaluminous. The (normal-) calc-alkaline signature and characteristic trace-element enrichment in hydrous-fluid mobile large-ion lithophile elements (LILE) relative to high-field strength elements (HFSE) suggest an origin within a magmatic arc. Multiple i…

Potential Interactions between Climate and Prehistoric Populations in Southern Morocco: Insights from Archaeological and Paleoclimatic Evidence

2022

Southern Morocco contains a rich archaeological record: engraving, painted rocks, and funerary monuments. This pre-historic and proto-historical heritage offers valuable information about the environmental context of pre-historic settlements. However, the Southern Moroccan archaeological record suffers from dating scarcity. And hence, the difficulty in establishing a reliable chronology. Most of the archaeological sites date from 7000 to 1000 years BP and are marked by a transition period from a humid to dry climate during the late Holocene. The relatively drier conditions likely resulted in adopting a new lifestyle characterized by cattle ranching, agriculture, and animal domestication. Ho…

Ces faïences de Nevers qu’on dit « de La Rochelle »

2006

Cet article apporte les preuves tant archéologiques qu'archéométriques que la plupart des faïences actuellement attribuées à La Rochelle proviennent en fait de Nevers.

From the Scientific Revolution to Rock: Toward a Sociology of Feedback

2007

International audience; For many people, rock's primal scene is set in a recording studio, in Memphis, in 1954. There, three musicians (Scotty Moore, Bill Black and Elvis Presley), a producer/engineer (Sam Phillips) and a tape recorder (Ampex) create a song ('All Right Mama') that durably transforms the physiognomy of music. In this article, I examine the technological, political and intellectual circumstances that made this event possible. One word holds pride of place in my discussion: feedback, a mode of organisation that originated in British scientific laboratories of the eighteenth century. 2 1 A great " thank you " to my sciences studies' mentors Jean-Paul Gaudillière and Ilana Löwy,…

Distribution and sources of bulk organic matter (OM) on a tropical intertidal mud bank in French Guiana from elemental and isotopic proxies

2014

International audience; The mobile French Guiana coast is a shoreface region downdrift of the Amazon River, where enormous quantities of inorganic and organic materials are exchanged with the Atlantic Ocean. The rapid accumulation of these materials forms highly unstable shore-attached mud banks, which can be temporally emerged and then rapidly colonized and stabilized by microphytobenthos and opportunistic mangroves (i.e. Avicennia germinans). Mud banks are preferential sites for the accumulation and significant remineralization of organic matter (OM) due to intense erosion/deposition cycles and potential biological colonization. The distribution and sources of bulk sedimentary OM were cha…

Ca-rich carbonates associated with ultrabasic-ultramafic melts. Carbonatite or limestone xenoliths? A case study from the late Miocene Morron de Vill…

2016

The volcanic products of the late Miocene Morron de Villamayor volcano (Calatrava Volcanic Field, central Spain) are known for being one of the few outcrops of leucitites in the entire circum-Mediterranean area. These rocks are important because aragonite of mantle origin has been reported as inclusion in olivine macrocrysts. We use petrographic observations, mineral compositions, as well as oxygen and carbon isotope ratios coupled with experimental petrology to understand the origin of carbonate phase in these olivine-phyric rocks. Groundmass and macrocryst olivines range from δ18OVSMOW of +4.8‰, typical of mantle olivine values, to +7.4‰, indicating contamination by sedimentary carbonate.…
