Composing a piece : the birthing of "Self-Actualize"
2013
Valmiit teokset ovat olleet pitkään säveltämisen tutkimuksen keskiössä. Sävellysprosessia ei voi ymmärtää sitä epäsuorasti tutkimalla. Ensi käden tieto säveltäjiltä on vähäistä. Tutkielman tekijän tarkoituksena oli tarkastella säveltämänsä "Self-Actualize" -metallimusiikkiteoksen sävellysprosessia ymmärtääkseen tapaansa työskennellä. Laadittu kronologinen narratiivi perustuu dokumentaatiolle prosessista, johon sisältyy päiväkirjamerkintöjä ja äänitiedostoja. Narratiivia tulkittiin laadullisesti. Narratiivia seurasi sävellysprosessin yhteenveto ja sen pohdiskelu. Selvä intentio ja tavoitteiden asetus olivat prosessin keskeisiä tekijöitä. Niiden merkittävyys tuli esille myös muiden säveltäjie…

Imaging connected porosity of crystalline rock by contrast agent-aided X-ray microtomography and scanning electron microscopy
2018
We set out to study connected porosity of crystalline rock using X‐ray microtomography and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS) with caesium chloride as a contrast agent. Caesium is an important radionuclide regarding the final deposition of nuclear waste and also forms dense phases that can be readily distinguished by X‐ray microtomography and SEM‐EDS. Six samples from two sites, Olkiluoto (Finland) and Grimsel (Switzerland), where transport properties of crystalline rock are being studied in situ, were investigated using X‐ray microtomography and SEM‐EDS. The samples were imaged with X‐ray microtomography, immersed in a saturated caesium chlorid…
Documenting the light sensitivity of Spanish Levantine rock art paintings
2015
[EN] A case study to evaluate the use of microfading spectrometry (MFS) for the study of colored systems found in prehistoric rock art paintings was conducted in the Cova Remígia rock-shelter, Castellón (Spain). This rock shelter is part of the rock art sites of the Mediterranean basin on the Iberian Peninsula included in UNESCO s World Heritage List. Some of the paintings belonging to this group are exposed to environmental factors including natural daylight, wind and rain, depending on the time of the day and the season of the year. Therefore, their preservation is a major concern to stakeholders and researchers responsible for protecting and studying these prehistoric paintings. The expe…
Sedimentary humic substances from lakes in Latvia
1997
Humic and fulvic acids, isolated from sediments of lakes in different trophic states (Latvia) were studied. The humic substances (HS) were characterized by their elemental and functional composition, their spectral properties, and molecular mass. The humus properties strongly depend on the origin of the sedimentary HS. Substantial similarity between sedimentary HS from oligotrophic and dystrophic water bodies was found, unless the biology of these lakes greatly differs. Humic molecules from sediments of oligotrophic and dystrophic lakes are smaller, more uniform, and contain lower amounts of carboxyl- and hydroxyl-groups than HS from meso- and eutrophic water bodies. On the other hand, sedi…
Erosión costera y cambio ambiental en el humeral de Cabanes-Torreblanca (Castelló). Datos para una gestión sostenible
2014
A progressive increase in salinity and marine influence, related to local subsidence characterize the evolution of the lagoon of Cabanes Torreblanca. Relative sea level rise, caused saltwater intrusion and landward migration of the barrier. This barrier is recessive (60-20 m in the last 50 years) and its current processes show a sedimentary deficit that can lead to rapid and irreversible changes. The information shown by this research can help to achieve a sustainable management.
The reconstruction of easterly wind directions for the Eifel region (Central Europe) during the period 40.3–12.9 ka BP
2010
Abstract. A high resolution continuous reconstruction of last glacial wind directions is based on provenance analysis of eolian sediments in a sediment core from the Dehner dry Maar in the Eifel region (Germany). This Maar is suitable to archive easterly wind directions due to its location west of the Devonian carbonate basins of the Eifel-North-South-Zone. Thus, eolian sediments with high clastic carbonate content can be interpreted as an east wind signal. The detection of such east wind sediments is applied by a new module of the RADIUS grain size analyze technique. The investigated time period from 40.3–12.9 ka BP can be subclassified in three units: The first unit covers the periods of …
Corundum Anorthosites-Kyshtymites from the South Urals, Russia: A Combined Mineralogical, Geochemical, and U-Pb Zircon Geochronological Study
2019
Kyshtymites are the unique corundum-blue sapphire-bearing variety of anorthosites of debatable geological origin found in the Ilmenogorsky-Vishnevogorsky complex (IVC) in the South Urals, Russia. Their mineral association includes corundum-sapphire, plagioclase (An61&ndash
Elemental and isotope covariation of noble gases in mineral phases from Etnean volcanics erupted during 2001–2005, and genetic relation with peripher…
2008
Abstract During 2001–2005, Mount Etna was characterized by intense eruptive activity involving the emission of petrologically different products from several vents, which involved at least two types of magma with different degrees of evolution. We investigated the ratios and abundances for noble-gas isotopes in fluid inclusions trapped in olivines and pyroxenes in the erupted products. We confirm that olivine has the most efficient crystalline structure for preserving the pristine composition of entrapped gases, while pyroxene can suffer diffusive He loss. Both the minerals also experience noble gas air contamination after eruption. Helium isotopes of the products genetically linked to the …
Predicting survival after transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma using a neural network: A Pilot Study.
2019
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Deciding when to repeat and when to stop transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be difficult even for experienced investigators. Our aim was to develop a survival prediction model for such patients undergoing TACE using novel machine learning algorithms and to compare it to conventional prediction scores, ART, ABCR and SNACOR. METHODS For this retrospective analysis, 282 patients who underwent TACE for HCC at our tertiary referral centre between January 2005 and December 2017 were included in the final analysis. We built an artificial neural network (ANN) including all parameters used by the aforementioned risk scores a…
