Vertical stratification patterns of methanotrophs and their genetic controllers in water columns of oxygen-stratified boreal lakes

2021

ABSTRACT The vertical structuring of methanotrophic communities and its genetic controllers remain understudied in the water columns of oxygen-stratified lakes. Therefore, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to study the vertical stratification patterns of methanotrophs in two boreal lakes, Lake Kuivajärvi and Lake Lovojärvi. Furthermore, metagenomic analyses were performed to assess the genomic characteristics of methanotrophs in Lovojärvi and the previously studied Lake Alinen Mustajärvi. The methanotroph communities were vertically structured along the oxygen gradient. Alphaproteobacterial methanotrophs preferred oxic water layers, while Methylococcales methanotrophs, consisting of putative…

Study of Spanish grape mycobiota and ochratoxin A production by Isolates of Aspergillus tubingensis and other members of Aspergillus section Nigri.

2005

ABSTRACT The native mycobiota of five grape varieties grown in Spain has been studied. Four (Bobal, Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Monastrell) were red varieties and one (Moscatel) was white. The main fungal genera isolated were Alternaria , Cladosporium , and Aspergillus . The isolation frequency of Aspergillus spp. section Nigri in contaminated samples was 82%. Ochratoxin A (OTA) production was assessed using yeast extract-sucrose broth supplemented with 5% bee pollen. Cultures of 205 isolates from this section showed that 74.2% of Aspergillus carbonarius and 14.3% of Aspergillus tubingensis isolates produced OTA at levels ranging from 1.2 to 3,530 ng/ml and from 46.4 to 111.5 ng/ml, respecti…

Molecular-genetic-based contribution to the taxonomy of theAcanthocyclops robustusgroup

2013

Long-standing taxonomic problems involving the Acanthocyclops robustus–vernalis complex of freshwater cyclopoids have not been resolved. After Kiefer's designation of A. robustus Sars as an older synonym of Acanthocycops americanus Marsh, a lot of data indicating their differentiation have been accumulated. To handle this taxonomical problem, representative populations from type localities of the respective taxa and from other European and US sites were analyzed morphologically and genetically using mitochondrial COI and 12S rRNA. Molecular-genetic analysis revealed that the three species described at the end of the nineteenth century: A. robustus, A. americanus and A. vernalis are well-sep…

Blockade of astrocytic activation delays the occurrence of severe hypoxia-induced seizure and respiratory arrest in mice

2020

Seizures are induced when subjects are exposed to severe hypoxia. It is followed by ventilatory fall-off and eventual respiratory arrest, which may underlie the pathophysiology of death in patients with epilepsy and severe respiratory disorders. However, the mechanisms of hypoxia-induced seizures have not been fully understood. Because astrocytes are involved in various neurological disorders, we aimed to investigate whether astrocytes are operational in seizure generation and respiratory arrest in a severe hypoxic condition. We examined the effects of astrocytic activation blockade on responses of EEG and ventilation to severe hypoxia. Adult mice were divided into two groups; in one group …

Subtercola boreus gen. nov., sp. nov. and Subtercola frigoramans sp. nov., two new psychrophilic actinobacteria isolated from boreal groundwater.

2000

Psychrophilic actinobacterial isolates from permanently cold groundwater in Finland were characterized using a polyphasic approach. Growth on agar plates was observed at temperatures down to -2 degrees C, with an optimum at 15-17 degrees C, but no growth was observed at 30 degrees C. The peptidoglycan type was B2y and the characteristic diamino acid was diaminobutyric acid. The cell wall sugars of strain K265T were rhamnose, ribose, xylose and mannose and those of strain K300T were glucose, rhamnose and xylose. The polar lipids included phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, one unknown phospholipid and two glycolipids. The main whole-cell fatty acids were 12-methyltetradecanoic acid…

Evolved high aerobic capacity has context-specific effects on gut microbiota

2022

Publisher Copyright: Copyright © 2022 Hanhimäki, Watts, Koskela, Koteja, Mappes and Hämäläinen. Gut microbiota is expected to coevolve with the host's physiology and may play a role in adjusting the host's energy metabolism to suit the host's environment. To evaluate the effects of both evolved host metabolism and the environmental context in shaping the gut microbiota, we used a unique combination of (1) experimental evolution to create selection lines for a fast metabolism and (2) a laboratory-to-field translocation study. Mature bank voles Myodes glareolus from lines selected for high aerobic capacity (A lines) and from unselected control (C lines) were released into large (0.2 ha) outdo…

Round Robin Testing initiative for fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement

2011

An international Round Robin Testing (RRT) programm e on FRP reinforcement was conducted within the framework of the Marie Curie R esearch Training Network, EN- CORE, and with the support of Task Group 9.3 of the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib). Eleven laboratories and six manufacturers and suppliers participated in this exercise. As part of this exte nsive experimental endeavour, one or more of the following tests were performed by the partic ipating laboratories: 1) tensile tests on FRP bars and strips; 2) tensile tests on FRP lamina tes; 3) double bond shear tests on FRP laminates (Externally Bonded Reinforcement, EBR) an d FRP bars/strip (Near Surface Mounted rein…

ANALISI DELLA COMUNITÀ MICROBICA INTESTINALE DI Reculitermes lucifugus (ROSSI) (ISOPTERA: RHINOTERMITIDAE)

2012

Resistive switching of anodic TiO2-based Memristors

2018

In recent years, memristors have attracted great attention owing to their simple fabrication process, high scalability, good compatibility with the CMOS technology, high switching speed, low power consumption and low cost for next-generation non-volatile memory technology [1]. The basic cell structure of a memristor is an insulator sandwiched between two metal electrodes. Among the materials being studied for memristors fabrication, binary metal oxides, such as TiO2, are most favourable because of their simple constituents, compatible with CMOS processes, and resistive to thermal/chemical damages. Anodizing is a an electrochemical low cost process carried out at room temperature to grow oxi…
