Uncertainty evaluation of design rainfall for urban flood risk analysis

A reliable and long dataset describing urban flood locations, volumes and depths would be an ideal prerequisite for assessing flood frequency distributions. However, data are often piecemeal and long-term hydraulic modelling is often adopted to estimate floods from historical rainfall series. Long-term modelling approaches are time- and resource-consuming, and synthetically designed rainfalls are often used to estimate flood frequencies. Assessment of threat status and management effectiveness in Kakamega Forest, Kenya

To counteract an increasing biodiversity decline, parks and protected areas have been established worldwide. However, many parks lack adequate management to address environmental degradation. To improve management strategies simple tools are needed for an assessment of human impact and management effectiveness of protected areas. This study quantifies the current threats in the heavily fragmented and degraded tropical rainforest of Kakamega, western Kenya. We recorded seven disturbance parameters at 22 sites in differently managed and protected areas of Kakamega Forest. Bactrocera oleae. Natural control factors. Natural control factors (parasitoids and climatic factors) influencing the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae, are analysed comparing two different areas of cultivated and wild olives, Sicily and the Western Cape of South Africa. Bactrocera oleae has a similar level of parasitization in both areas, much higher in wild olives than in cultivated ones. Climatic conditions are much more important than climatic factors, influencing the growth of olive fruit fly populations, producing a higher level of infestation in more humid and rainy productive seasons.

Selection of the Optimal Design Rainfall Return Period of Urban Drainage Systems

Abstract The aim of this work is to define a methodology to identify the optimal rainfall return period for the design of urban drainage systems. The choice of the optimal return period is made minimizing the total costs of the system: the sewer network is dimensioned for a set of possible design rainfall return periods, and the corresponding construction, maintenance and operation costs are evaluated. For each scenario, the total expected damage from flooding caused by rainfall events with return period greater than the design one is then estimated by hydraulic simulation. This methodology has been applied to a small urban catchment in Palermo (Italy).

Riga, the capital of Latvia is a city with nearly 900,000 inhabitants and various highly concentrated industries. Air pollution in Riga is a serious problem affecting health and damaging valuable buildings of historical importance, as acid rain and smog take their toll.
