Students in higher education with reading and writing difficulties
2015
The aim of this study is to explore adult students’ descriptions and understandings of their reading and writing difficulties, and to describe the ways they are copying with them. In higher level studies, information is typically gained by reading and giving evidence of knowledge acquisition in writing. When students have difficulties with these essential academic skills, studying and lifelong learning can be hard work as well as time-consuming. General understanding of dyslexia and reading difficulties at the higher education level has improved, although considerable ambiguity remains about what these mean in practice. This is a qualitative, interview-based study that seeks to improve our …
Chronological expression of Ciliated Bronchial Epithelium 1 during pulmonary development
2009
Ciliated Bronchial Epithelium (CBE) 1 is a novel gene, which is expressed in ciliated cells. As cilia are important during embryogenesis, the present authors characterised the murine homologue of CBE1 (Cbe1) and compared its temporal expression during murine and human lung development. Cbe1 cDNA was cloned and characterised using sequencing, standard PCR and Western blotting. Mouse and human embryonic/fetal lungs (HELs) were harvested for mRNA analysis and protein localisation in vivo and in vitro using RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. The Cbe1 amino acid sequence was >75% identical with CBE1 and its alternative splicing and tissue distribution were highly conserved. Pulmonary expression of…
Zebrafish as a Model to Evaluate a CRISPR/Cas9-Based Exon Excision Approach as a Future Treatment Option for EYS-Associated Retinitis Pigmentosa
2021
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited retinal disease (IRD) with an overall prevalence of 1 in 4000 individuals. Mutations in EYS (Eyes shut homolog) are among the most frequent causes of non-syndromic autosomal recessively inherited RP and act via a loss-of-function mechanism. In light of the recent successes for other IRDs, we investigated the therapeutic potential of exon skipping for EYS-associated RP. CRISPR/Cas9 was employed to generate zebrafish from which the region encompassing the orthologous exons 37-41 of human EYS (eys exons 40-44) was excised from the genome. The excision of these exons was predicted to maintain the open reading frame and to result in the removal of exactl…
GraphoGame SI: the development of a technology-enhanced literacy learning tool for Standard Indonesian
2018
Early intervention programs are generally considered the most efficient and beneficial approach to providing support to struggling beginning readers. This paper discusses the theoretical background, development, and design of, as well as the first results obtained with, GraphoGame for Standard Indonesian, a technology-enhanced learning environment that trains the basic skills of reading by high but playful exposure to grapheme-phoneme coupling. The results of the pilot study assessing the usability of the program in 69 first-graders show that the more the students with low pre-test phonological skills were exposed to the game, the better their post-test performance on reading and decoding f…
The mitochondrial genome of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Stimulation of intra-chromosomal recombination in Escherichia coli by the gene product of the …
1991
The open reading frame of the first intron of the mitochondrial cox1 gene (cox1I1) was expressed in Escherichia coli. The putative intron-encoded protein stimulated the formation of intra-chromosomal lac +-recombinants about threefold. No stimulation was found when the reading frame was inserted in the opposite direction, or when it was interrupted by a deletion. The intronic open reading frame did not complement recA − or recB − mutants of E. coli. In S. pombe, elimination of this intron did not abolish homologous recombination in mitochondria. A possible role of the recombinase activity in yeast mitochondria will be discussed.
FEDRO: a software tool for the automatic discovery of candidate ORFs in plants with c →u RNA editing
2019
RNA editing is an important mechanism for gene expression in plants organelles. It alters the direct transfer of genetic information from DNA to proteins, due to the introduction of differences between RNAs and the corresponding coding DNA sequences. Software tools successful for the search of genes in other organisms not always are able to correctly perform this task in plants organellar genomes. Moreover, the available software tools predicting RNA editing events utilise algorithms that do not account for events which may generate a novel start codon. We present Fedro, a Java software tool implementing a novel strategy to generate candidate Open Reading Frames (ORFs) resulting from Cytidi…
Predicting Reading Disability: Early Cognitive Risk and Protective Factors
2013
This longitudinal study examined early cognitive risk and protective factors for Grade 2 reading disability (RD). We first examined the reading outcome of 198 children in four developmental cognitive subgroups that were identified in our previous analysis: dysfluent trajectory, declining trajectory, unexpected trajectory and typical trajectory. We found that RD was unevenly distributed among the subgroups, although children with RD were found in all subgroups. A majority of the children with RD had familial risk for dyslexia. Second, we examined in what respect children with similar early cognitive development but different RD outcome differ from each other in cognitive skills, task-focused…
Mapping and structure of DMXL1, a human homologue of the DmX gene from Drosophila melanogaster coding for a WD repeat protein.
2000
The DmX gene was recently isolated from the X chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster. TBLASTN searches of the dbEST databases revealed sequences with a high level of similarity to DmX in a variety of different species, including insects, nematodes, and mammals showing that DmX is an evolutionarily highly conserved gene. Here we describe the cloning of the cDNA and the chromosomal localization of one of the human homologues of DmX, Dmx-like 1 (DMXL1). The human DMXL1 gene codes for a large mRNA of 11 kb with an open reading frame of 3027 amino acids. The putative protein belongs to the superfamily of WD repeat proteins, which have mostly regulatory functions. The DMXL1 protein contains an exc…
Stimulation of protein (collagen) synthesis in sponge cells by a cardiac myotrophin‐related molecule from Suberites domuncula
2000
The body wall of sponges (Porifera), the lowest metazoan phylum, is formed by two epithelial cell layers of exopinacocytes and endopinacocytes, both of which are associated with collagen fibrils. Here we show that a myotrophin-like polypeptide from the sponge Suberites domuncula causes the expression of collagen in cells from the same sponge in vitro. The cDNA of the sponge myotrophin was isolated; the potential open reading frame of 360 nt encodes a 120 aa long protein (Mr of 12,837). The sequence SUBDOMYOL shares high similarity with the known metazoan myotrophin sequences. The expression of SUBDOMYOL is low in single cells but high after formation of primmorph aggregates as well as in in…
