Grønn omsorg i Agder : møter med ungdom som deltar i Inn på tunet
2013
Masteroppgave i psykisk helsearbeid ME504 Universitetet i Agder 2013 Background: This study has been conducted on the background of my interest in Green Care. A collective term for activities where animals and nature is used for the rehabilitation of humans with different problems. Aim and research question: The aim of the study has been to see what experience the youths that attended project Green Care has gained. In addition I wanted to find out the importance of animals and nature. This lead to the following problem being addressed: What consequence has the participation in In the Courtyard had for the individual’s everyday life? Method: The method in this research project has been quali…
DESIGN, MODELING, AND FABRICATION OF THERMOELECTRIC GENERATOR FOR WASTE HEAT RECOVERY IN LOCAL PROCESS INDUSTRY
2017
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 The waste heat from energy company consumption sectors, when rejected into atmosphere, are useless and it contributes to global warming. Nowadays industrial activities and energy sectors (power stations, oil refineries, coke ovens, etc.) are the most energy consuming sectors worldwide and, consequently, the responsible for the release of large quantities of industrial waste heat to the environment by means of hot exhaust gases, cooling media and heat lost from hot equipment surfaces and heated products. Recovering and reusing these waste heats would provide an attractive opportunity for a low-carbon and less costly energy re…
Business continuity of business models : Evaluating the resilience of business models for contingencies
2019
Company business models are vulnerable to various contingencies in the business environment that may unexpectedly render their business logic ineffective. In particular, technological advancements, such as the Internet of things, big data, sharing economy and crowdsourcing, have enabled new forms of business models that can effectively and abruptly make traditional business models obsolete. By disrupting or even diminishing companies’ revenue streams, environmental contingencies may present a significant threat to business continuity (BC). Evaluating the resilience of business models against these contingencies should therefore be a core area of BC. However, existing BC approaches tend to f…

Economic benefits from food recovery at the retail stage: An application to Italian food chains
2013
The food supply chain is affected by losses of products near to their expiry date or damaged by improper transportation or production defects. Such products are usually poorly attractive for the consumer in the target market even if they maintain their nutritional properties. On the other hand undernourished people face every day the problem of fulfilling their nutritional needs usually relying on non-profit organizations. In this field the food recovery enabling economic benefits for donors is nowadays seen as a coherent way to manage food products unsalable in the target market for various causes and thus destined to be discarded and disposed to landfill thus representing only a cost. Des…
Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs): The Case Study of Palermo University (Italy)
2021
The wastewater sector paradigm is shifting from wastewater treatment to resource recovery. In addition, concerns regarding sustainability during the operation have increased. In this sense, there is a need to break barriers (i.e., social, economic, technological, legal, etc.) for moving forward towards water resource recovery facilities and demonstration case studies can be very effective and insightful. This paper presents a new water resource recovery case study which is part of the Horizon 2020 EU Project “Achieving wider uptake of water-smart solutions—Wider Uptake”. The final aim is to demonstrate the importance of a resource recovery system based on the circular economy concept. The r…

Recover and reutilization of waste matter of coffee preparation. An experiment for Environmental Science Course
2001
This work is designed as an experience for organic and analytical chemistry laboratories involved in environmental science courses. It achieves the following goals: 1. It shows that environmental samples are not homogeneous (1). 2. It is possible to build up students’ confidence in manipulating everyday matter when they are beginning to study scientific subjects and to introduce some methods of sample preparation in analytical chemistry. 3. It demonstrates some fundamental analytical principles (acid–base and redox analysis, solid–liquid and liquid– liquid extraction, etc.). 4. It shows the importance of instrumental analysis, such as gas chromatography, atomic absorption spectroscopy and e…
Energy, water and environmental balance of a complex water supply system
2015
The present paper describes the analysis of water and energy balance in a complex urban water supply system. The analysis was carried out employing Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodologies. The LCA approach was integrated with the analysis of the system energy and water balance. For a real size water supply system, based on the results of the individual LCAs, the current baseline was constructed highlighting the water, energy and environmental (in terms of CO2eq emissions in the atmosphere) costs of supplied water. Then, three different mitigation measures have been evaluated: the first is based on energy production by installation of photovoltaic systems; the second is based on energy recov…
Towards the first proof of the concept of a Reverse ElectroDialysis - Membrane Distillation Heat Engine
2019
Abstract The coupling of Reverse Electrodialysis with Membrane Distillation is a promising option for the conversion of waste heat into electricity. This study evaluates the performances of the integrated system under different operating conditions, employing validated model and correlations. This work provides a detailed description of the behaviour of a real RED-MD heat engine and indicates the set of inlet concentrations, velocities and equipment size which returns the highest cycle exergy efficiency. These operating conditions were selected for the pilot plant developed within the EU-funded project RED Heat to Power. For the first time, a perspective analysis was also included, consider…
