Activation of the Constitutive Androstane Receptor Inhibits Leukocyte Adhesiveness to Dysfunctional Endothelium
2021
Leukocyte cell recruitment into the vascular subendothelium constitutes an early event in the atherogenic process. As the effect of the constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) on leukocyte recruitment and endothelial dysfunction is poorly understood, this study investigated whether the role of CAR activation can affect this response and the underlying mechanisms involved. Under physiological flow conditions, TNFα-induced endothelial adhesion of human leukocyte cells was concentration-dependently inhibited by preincubation of human umbilical arterial endothelial cells with the selective human CAR ligand CITCO. CAR agonism also prevented TNFα induced VCAM-1 expression, as well as MCP-1/CCL-2 a…
The Etiology of Muscle Fatigue Differs between Two Electrical Stimulation Protocols
2016
International audience; Purpose: This study aimed at investigating the mechanisms involved in the force reduction induced by two electrical stimulation (ES) protocols that were designed to activate motor units differently. Methods: The triceps surae of 11 healthy subjects (8 men; age, similar to 28 yr) was activated using ES applied over the tibial nerve. Two ES protocols (conventional [CONV]: 20 Hz, 0.05 ms vs wide-pulse high-frequency [WPHF]: 80 Hz, 1 ms) were performed and involved 40 trains (6 s on-6 s off) delivered at an intensity (I-ES) evoking 20% of maximal voluntary contraction. To analyze the mechanical properties of the motor units activated at I-ES, force-frequency relation was…
Angiotensin II-induced vascular dysfunction depends on interferon-γ-driven immune cell recruitment and mutual activation of monocytes and NK-cells.
2013
Objective— Immune cells contribute to angiotensin II (ATII)–induced vascular dysfunction and inflammation. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ), an inflammatory cytokine exclusively produced by immune cells, seems to be involved in ATII-driven cardiovascular injury, but the actions and cellular source of IFN-γ remain incompletely understood. Approach and Results— IFN-γ −/− and Tbx21 −/− mice were partially protected from ATII-induced (1 mg/kg per day of ATII, infused subcutaneously by miniosmotic pumps) vascular endothelial and smooth muscle dysfunction, whereas mice overexpressing IFN-γ showed constitutive vascular dysfunction. Absence of T-box expressed in T cells (T-bet), the IFN-γ transcription factor…
Who makes it all the way? Participants vs. decliners, and completers vs. drop-outs, in a 6-month exercise trial during cancer treatment : Results fro…
2022
Abstract Purpose To compare sociodemographic, health- and exercise-related characteristics of participants vs. decliners, and completers vs. drop-outs, in an exercise intervention trial during cancer treatment. Methods Patients with newly diagnosed breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer were invited to participate in a 6-month exercise intervention. Background data for all respondents (n = 2051) were collected at baseline by questionnaire and medical records. Additional data were collected using an extended questionnaire, physical activity monitors, and fitness testing for trial participants (n = 577). Moreover, a sub-group of decliners (n = 436) consented to additional data collection by a…
Contratación internacional de médicos/as latinoamericanos/as en Portugal y España
2015
From the experiences of Latin American doctors who practice their profession in Portugal and Spain, the article seeks to compare the international recruit…
Internal and External Hiring
2019
Using large-scale, linked, employer–employee, Finnish panel data, the authors examine firms’ internal versus external hiring decisions more comprehensively than has prior literature. The results show that vacancies in job hierarchies are filled more often by horizontal moves than by promotions. Most horizontal moves are external and within the same job functions, so that internally promoted workers face external competitors occupying higher job levels. Compared to internally promoted workers, external and internal horizontal hires have stronger observable ability indicators (e.g., education, experience, prior work history) but weaker job performance in the year preceding the transfer. Inter…
Polyaspartamide based hydrogel with cell recruitment properties for the local administration of hydrophobic anticancer drugs
2019
Abstract By exploiting the chemical versatility and the high water dispersibility of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)D,L-aspartamide, in this work, two different polymer derivatives were synthesized for the first time. Obtained macromolecules were characterized and used to produce hydrogels exploitable for the local release of hydrophobic anticancer drugs. The first derivative, bearing pendant β-cyclodextrins, was employed to solubilize tamoxifen, chosen as a model drug, and to produce a water soluble supramolecular complex, as evidenced through tamoxifen phase solubility studies. The second derivative, bearing pendant Cyclo(Arginine-Glyicine-Asparagine-D-Phenilyalanine-Cysteine) peptide moieties…
Protective ventilation with high versus low positive end-expiratory pressure during one-lung ventilation for thoracic surgery (PROTHOR): study protoc…
2018
Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) may result in longer duration of in-hospital stay and even mortality. Both thoracic surgery and intraoperative mechanical ventilation settings add considerably to the risk of PPC. It is unclear if one-lung ventilation (OLV) for thoracic surgery with a strategy of intraoperative high positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and recruitment maneuvers (RM) reduces PPC, compared to low PEEP without RM.PROTHOR is an international, multicenter, randomized, controlled, assessor-blinded, two-arm trial initiated by investigators of the PROtective VEntilation NETwork. In total, 2378 patients will be randomly assigned to one of two different intraoperative me…
Differences in cardiorespiratory and neuromuscular responses between voluntary and stimulated contractions of the quadriceps femoris muscle.
2006
The aim of this study was to compare respiratory gas exchange variables and muscle fatigue between equal-intensity (i.e., same force output) electrostimulated and voluntary contractions of the quadriceps muscle (46+/-10% of maximal voluntary force). Twelve healthy men served as volunteers. Oxygen consumption, ventilation and respiratory exchange ratio were recorded during the exercise bouts. Muscle fatigue was quantified as the exercise-induced reduction in maximal voluntary force. The average oxygen consumption (11+/-3 versus 8+/-2 mL min(-1)kg(-1)), ventilation (23+/-4 versus 16+/-2 L min(-1)) and respiratory exchange ratio (0.96+/-0.02 versus 0.85+/-0.01) were significantly higher during…
Rationale, study design, and analysis plan of the Alveolar Recruitment for ARDS Trial (ART): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.
2012
Abstract Background Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with high in-hospital mortality. Alveolar recruitment followed by ventilation at optimal titrated PEEP may reduce ventilator-induced lung injury and improve oxygenation in patients with ARDS, but the effects on mortality and other clinical outcomes remain unknown. This article reports the rationale, study design, and analysis plan of the Alveolar Recruitment for ARDS Trial (ART). Methods/Design ART is a pragmatic, multicenter, randomized (concealed), controlled trial, which aims to determine if maximum stepwise alveolar recruitment associated with PEEP titration is able to increase 28-day survival in patients with …
