Relativistic Neel-order fields induced by electrical current in antiferromagnets

2014

We predict that a lateral electrical current in antiferromagnets can induce non-equilibrium N\'eel order fields, i.e. fields whose sign alternates between the spin sublattices, which can trigger ultra-fast spin-axis reorientation. Based on microscopic transport theory calculations we identify staggered current-induced fields analogous to the intra-band and to the intrinsic inter-band spin-orbit fields previously reported in ferromagnets with a broken inversion-symmetry crystal. To illustrate their rich physics and utility, we considered bulk Mn2Au with the two spin sublattices forming inversion partners, and a 2D square-lattice antiferromagnet with broken structural inversion symmetry model…

Intraband and interband spin-orbit torques in noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets

2015

Intraband and interband contributions to the current-driven spin-orbit torque in magnetic materials lacking inversion symmetry are theoretically studied using Kubo formula. In addition to the current-driven field-like torque ${\bf T}_{\rm FL}= \tau_{\rm FL}{\bf m}\times{\bf u}_{\rm so}$ (${\bf u}_{\rm so}$ being a unit vector determined by the symmetry of the spin-orbit coupling), we explore the intrinsic contribution arising from impurity-independent interband transitions and producing an anti-damping-like torque of the form ${\bf T}_{\rm DL}= \tau_{\rm DL}{\bf m}\times({\bf u}_{\rm so}\times{\bf m})$. Analytical expressions are obtained in the model case of a magnetic Rashba two-dimension…

On the half-metallicity of Co2FeSi Heusler alloy: Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy andab initiostudy

2013

Co2FeSi, a Heusler alloy with the highest magnetic moment per unit cell and the highest Curie temperature, has largely been described theoretically as a half-metal. This conclusion, however, disagrees with point contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy measurements, which give much lower values of spin polarization, P. Here, we present the spin polarization measurements of Co2FeSi by the PCAR technique, along with a thorough computational exploration, within the DFT and a GGA+U approach, of the Coulomb exchange U parameters for Co and Fe atoms, taking into account spin-orbit coupling. We find that the orbital contribution (mo) to the total magnetic moment (mT) is significant, since it…

Spin accumulation in metallic thin films induced by electronic impurity scattering

2021

In order to explore the spin accumulation, evaluating the spin galvanic and spin Hall effect, we utilize the semi-classical Boltzmann equation based on input from the relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's function method, within the density functional theory. We calculate the spin accumulation including multiple contributions, especially skew-scattering (scattering-in term) and compare this to three different approximations, which include the isotropic and anisotropic relaxation time approximation. For heavy metals, with strong intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, we find that almost all the effects are captured within the anisotropic relaxation time approximation. On the other hand, in lig…

Unrestricted Shapes of Jellium Clusters

1995

A jellium model with a completely relaxable background charge density is used to study metal clusters containing 2 to 22 electrons. The resulting shapes of the clusters exhibit breaking of axial and inversion symmetries, as well as molecular formation. The clusters without inversion symmetry are soft against deformation. The strongly deformed 14-electron cluster is found to be semi-magic. Stable-shape isomers are predicted.

Analysis of photon-scanning tunneling microscope images of inhomogeneous samples: determination of the local refractive index of channel waveguides

1995

Channel waveguides are imaged by a photon-scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM). The polarization of the light and its orientation with respect to the guide axis are shown to be very important parameters in the analysis of the images of such samples. We simulated image formation for the plane of incidence parallel to the axis of the guide. Our theoretical results are qualitatively in agreement with our measurements. These results show the ability of the PSTM to give information about the local refractive-index variations of a sample.

The effective diffusion coefficient in a one-dimensional discrete lattice with the inclusions

2015

Abstract The expression for the effective diffusion coefficient in one-dimensional discrete lattice model of random walks in matrix with inclusions and unequal hopping lengths is derived. This allowed us to suggest a physical interpretation to the concentration jump – ad hoc parameter commonly used in extended effective medium theory for accounting particle partial reflection on the boundary matrix–inclusion. The analytical results obtained are in excellent agreement with computer simulations.

An antidamping spin–orbit torque originating from the Berry curvature

2014

Magnetization switching at the interface between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic metals, controlled by current-induced torques, could be exploited in magnetic memory technologies. Compelling questions arise regarding the role played in the switching by the spin Hall effect in the paramagnet and by the spin-orbit torque originating from the broken inversion symmetry at the interface. Of particular importance are the antidamping components of these current-induced torques acting against the equilibrium-restoring Gilbert damping of the magnetization dynamics. Here, we report the observation of an antidamping spin-orbit torque that stems from the Berry curvature, in analogy to the origin of the …

A common optical algorithm for the evaluation of specular spin polarized neutron and Mössbauer reflectivities

2001

Using the general approach of Lax for multiple scattering of waves a 2x2 covariant expression for the reflectivity of polarized slow neutrons of a magnetic layer structure of arbitrary complexity is given including polarization effects of the external magnetic field. The present formalism is identical to the earlier published one for the (nuclear) resonant X-ray (Mossbauer) reflectivity and properly takes the effect of the external magnetic field of arbitrary direction on the neutron beam into account. The form of the reflectivity matrix allows for an efficient numerical calculation.
