STATISTICAL MODELS FOR LANDSLIDE SUSCEPTIBILITY ASSESSMENT: METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES AND GUIDELINES FOR MEDITERRANEAN CONTEXT
2012
The geo-hydrologic event in the Peloritan – Ionian area of 2009: debris-flow susceptibility assessment by means of forward logistic regression
2012
On the 1st of October 2009, the area centred on the village of Giampilieri (Messina), on the Ionian side of the Peloritan belt, suffered thousands of landslides activated in the time lapse of about five hours, which caused 36 victims, more than 100 injured and more than 0.5M€ of damage to structures. This unprecedented phenomenon was triggered by an exceptional meteorological event, recorded at the foothills with 250mm of rain in just 8 hours; this amount of rainfall was cumulated to two previous events (16/IX: 75mm; 23/IX: 190mm) for a total amount of more than 500mm in less than two weeks. Due to the peculiar triggering conditions a huge number of debris flows involved the shallow weather…
Iteratively reweighted least squares in crystal structure refinements
2011
The use of robust techniques in crystal structure multipole refinements of small molecules as an alternative to the commonly adopted weighted least squares is presented and discussed. As is well known, the main disadvantage of least-squares fitting is its sensitivity to outliers. The elimination from the data set of the most aberrant reflections (due to both experimental errors and incompleteness of the model) is an effective practice that could yield satisfactory results, but it is often complicated in the presence of a great number of bad data points, whose one-by-one elimination could become unattainable. This problem can be circumvented by means of a robust least-squares regression that…
Data fusion analysis applied to different climate change models: an application to the energy consumptions of a building office
2018
The paper aims to achieve the modelling of climate change effects on heating and cooling in the building sector, through the use of the available Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change forecasted data. Data from several different climate models will be fused with regards to mean air temperature, wind speed and horizontal solar radiation. Several climatic models data were analyzed ranging from January 2006 to December 2100. Rather than considering each model in isolation, we propose a data fusion approach for providing a robust combined model for morphing an existing weather data file. The final aim is simulating future energy use for heating and cooling of a reference building as a conse…
An adaptive algorithm for determining the optimal degree of regression in constrained mock-Chebyshev least squares quadrature
2022
In this paper we develop an adaptive algorithm for determining the optimal degree of regression in the constrained mock-Chebyshev least-squares interpolation of an analytic function to obtain quadrature formulas with high degree of exactness and accuracy from equispaced nodes. We numerically prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by several examples.

A Generalized Missing-Indicator Approach to Regression with Imputed Covariates
2011
We consider estimation of a linear regression model using data where some covariate values are missing but imputations are available to fill in the missing values. This situation generates a tradeoff between bias and precision when estimating the regression parameters of interest. Using only the subsample of complete observations does not cause bias but may imply a substantial loss of precision because the complete cases may be too few. On the other hand, filling in the missing values with imputations may cause bias. We provide the new Stata command gmi, which handles such tradeoff by using either model reduction or Bayesian model averaging techniques in the context of the generalized miss…
