Una aproximación volumétrica a la desagregación espacial de la población combinando cartografía temática y datos LIDAR

2016

[EN] Availability of high resolution population distribution data, independent of the administrative units in which demographic statistics are collected, is a real necessity in many fields: risk evaluation due to earthquakes, flooding or fires, to name just a few, integration between socio-demographic and environmental or geographical information collected in different formats, policy design for the provision public services, such as health, education or public transport, or mobility studies in urban areas or metropolitan regions. Because of this, the literature has explored various methods of population downscaling, collected at communality or census tract level, into smaller areas; typica…

Data for: Crop specific algorithms trained over ground measurements provide the best performance for GAI and fAPAR estimates from Landsat-8 observati…

2021

This dataset encompasses a large number (> 700) of in-situ observations over elemantary sampling units (about 20m2) of LAI (effective and actual), fAPAR and fraction of vegetation cover (fCover) collected over a network of agricultural sites during the ImagineS project (http://fp7-imagines.eu/) in the period 2013-2016. The ground dataset was collected with digital hemispherical photography (DHP), LAI2200, and AccuPAR devices following well stablished protocols in agreement with CEOS LPV good practices. The ground data is complemented with concomitant Landsat-8/OLI observations, the sun zenith angle at the acquisition and the NDVI. This results in a unique database to calibrate and valida…

Combining the FAO56 agrohydrological model and remote sensing data to assess water demand in a Sicilian irrigation district

2020

Agricultural water use in irrigated areas plays a key role in the Mediterranean regions characterized by semi-arid climate and water shortage. In the face of optimizing irrigation water use, farmers must revise their irrigation practices to increase the drought resilience of agricultural systems and to avoid severe damages in agro-ecosystems. In this direction, during the last decades, the research has been focused on mathematical models to simulate the process of driving mass transport and energy exchanges in the Soil-Plant-Atmosphere system.

The objective of the paper was to test the suitability of the combination of FAO56 agro-hydrologi…

Reservoir monitoring using satellite SAR and GNSS: a case study in southern Italy

2018

Recently, it has been demonstrated that it is possible to relate water levels of a reservoir with its dam displacements. Water levels were determined via remote sensing, while dam displacements were measured via Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Results have shown that displacements and water levels are correlated.Water levels at the Magazzolo reservoir in southern Italy were firstly retrieved using two remote sensing approaches: by visual matching between the reservoir shoreline and contour lines, and by evaluating the surface extent via unsupervised classification to estimate the water levels with an area/depth relation. Dam displacements were measured using GPS receivers on the …

Estimation of actual evapotranspiration of Mediterranean perennial crops by means of remote-sensing based surface energy balance models

2009

Abstract. Actual evapotranspiration from typical Mediterranean crops has been assessed in a Sicilian study area by using surface energy balance (SEB) and soil-water balance models. Both modelling approaches use remotely sensed data to estimate evapotranspiration fluxes in a spatially distributed way. The first approach exploits visible (VIS), near-infrared (NIR) and thermal (TIR) observations to solve the surface energy balance equation whereas the soil-water balance model uses only VIS-NIR data to detect the spatial variability of crop parameters. Considering that the study area is characterized by typical spatially sparse Mediterranean vegetation, i.e. olive, citrus and vineyards, alterna…

Review of High Resolution Thermal Infrared Applications and Requirements: The Fuegosat Synthesis Study

2013

High resolution thermal infrared remote sensing can have a wide range of applications. In this chapter we describe the different applications and requirements identified after a revision study in the framework of the Fuegosat Synthesis Study (FSS). This project was funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), and the three main objectives were: (i) review of applications and analyses for user requirements, (ii) consolidation of user requirements over a broad range of applications, and (iii) matching of user requirements and industry concepts to identify and outline a set of potential mission scenarios and their corresponding requirements. This chapter focuses on issues (i) and (ii). These obj…

Detection and mapping of Posidonia oceanica dead matte by high-resolution acoustic imaging

2009

A high-resolution echosounder was used to acquire seismo-acoustic records of P. oceanica dead matte patches in the Gulf of Palermo. Seismo-acoustic profiling enabled detection of dead matte structures that are invisible to visual inspection, being hidden by variable layers of sandy sediment. The thickness of the dead matte measured reaches a maximum of 2.2 m. The mean volume of the matte per unit area of seabed surface (MEIx) varies from 0.2 to 2.2 m 3 /m 2 , with an average value of 1.6 m 3 /m 2 and a total volume estimated at 73,000 m 3 . From literature data and from the volume of dead matte calculated in the present work we estimated that total carbon accumulated in the matte is about 2…

Unmanned aerial vehicle technology to assess the state of threatened biogenic formations: The vermetid reefs of mediterranean intertidal rocky coasts

2021

Abstract Vermetid bioconstructions are biogenic formations, built by sessile gastropod molluscs belonging to the family Vermetidae worldwide distributed, occurring in the intertidal and upper subtidal in the rocky shores. In the Mediterranean basin, they occur in complex and tridimensional structures that enhance the local biodiversity, allowing to qualify the structuring species as ecosystem engineers. Due to their ecological relevance and considerable extension along the coasts, we assessed their structural complexity using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, as tool of littoral cartography analysis of these bioconstructions, and plaster hemispheres dissolution as a descriptor index…
