Influence and use of information sources about childbearing among Spanish pregnant women
2020
Background: Pregnant women create their childbirth expectations from their available information. Therefore, they should have access to reliable and quality medical information. However, the literature points a knowledge gap with respect to the sources of information used by them. Objectives: The primary objective was to analyse the most influential and widely used sources of information about childbearing in Spanish pregnant women. The secondary objectives were to assess the quality and usefulness of the information sources, to identify those regarded as deficient by pregnant women and to discover differences in information use related to parity. Design and methods: A cross-sectional descr…
Inter-cycle and inter-observer variability of the antral follicle count in routine clinical practice
2017
Antral follicle count (AFC) is a reliable predictor of ovarian response to stimulation and its inter-cycle and inter-observer variability has been extensively studied on in vitro fertilization (IVF), mostly in highly selected populations within studies not originally designed for this purpose. In this retrospective cohort study, we assess the inter-cycle variation of AFC in a setting similar to that of the daily practice. We included only patients undergoing mild stimulation for intrauterine insemination (IUI). One hundred and forty-eight patients had two (62 patients, group A), three (49 patients, group B) or four (37 patients, group C) IUI cycles and AFC was measured on early follicular p…
Cardiovascular events among reproductive and menopausal age women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis
2019
This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence (P)/hazard ratio (HR) of cardiovascular (CV) events among reproductive age and menopausal age women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in comparison with healthy controls. PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of science, and Google scholar were searched for retrieving observational studies published up to April 2018 investigating CV events in patients with PCOS. The primary outcomes were a composite outcome of CV events [including coronary arterial disease (CAD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), myocardial infarction (MI), angina, heart failure, and ischemic heart disease] and mortality due to CV events; secondary outcomes were specific CVD events, …
Maternal caesarean section infection (MACSI) in Sierra Leone: a case-control study.
2020
Sierra Leone is the country with highest maternal mortality and infections are the underlying cause in 11% of maternal deaths, but the real burden remains unknown. This study aims to determine the incidence and risk factors of surgical site infection (SSI) post-caesarean section (CS) in women admitted to Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) in Freetown, Sierra Leone. A prospective case-control (1:3 ratio) study was implemented from 1 May 2018 to 30 April 2019 and 11 women presenting with suspected or confirmed infection post-CS were screened for inclusion as a case. For each case, three patients undergoing CS on the same day and admitted to the same ward, but not presenting with SSI…
Evaluation of sexual function in females with exstrophy-epispadias-complex: a survey of the multicenter German CURE-Net
2016
Standardized knowledge about genital function in adult female individuals with exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC) is scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate sexual function using the standardized Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), and to assess the influence of bladder and vaginal reconstruction and the presence of incontinence on FSFI results.Sixty-one females (aged ≥18 years) recruited by the German multicenter network for congenital uro-rectal malformations (CURE-Net) were asked to complete the FSFI and a self-designed semi-structured questionnaire assessing comprehensive medical data, gynecological, and psychosocial items. Twenty-one eligible females (34%) returned both quest…
Oral Health Knowledge and Related Factors among Pregnant Women Attending to a Primary Care Center in Spain
2019
Our aim was to assess the knowledge of pregnant women in terms of oral health and prevention, correlating it with socio-sanitary and educational factors, as well as self-care and oral health state referred. A total of 139 women from a Health Department in Comunidad Valenciana (Valencia, Spain) participated in the study. They underwent an auto-administered survey which included socio-economic and educational factors, self-care in terms of oral hygiene, referred oral health state, and general knowledge on prevention and oral health. Chi-squared test (&chi
Determinants of seasonal influenza vaccination in pregnant women in Valencia, Spain
2016
Background: In most countries the coverage of seasonal influenza vaccination in pregnant women is low. We investigated the acceptance, reasons for rejection and professional involvement related to vaccine information in pregnant women in Valencia, Spain. Methods: Observational retrospective study in 200 pregnant women, 100 vaccinated and 100 unvaccinated, were interviewed during the 2014/2015 vaccination campaign. Electronic medical records, immunization registry and telephone interviews were used to determine reasons for vaccination and immunization rejection. Results: 40.5% of pregnant women in the health department were vaccinated. The midwife was identified as source of information for …
Laparoscopic Splenectomy for Secondary Cytoreduction in Ovarian Cancer Patients With Localized Spleen Recurrence: Feasibility and Technique
2016
Abstract Study Objective To investigate the feasibility of laparoscopic splenectomy in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer with isolated spleen metastasis. Design (Canadian Task Force classification III). Setting Tertiary referral centre in Rome, Italy. Patients Eight women with an isolated platinum-sensitive splenic relapse of ovarian cancer. Intervention Between February 2013 and May 2015, 8 women with an isolated platinum-sensitive splenic relapse of ovarian cancer were submitted to laparoscopic splenectomy. Measurements and Main Results All patients underwent laparoscopic splenectomy without conversion to an open approach. The median estimated intraoperative blood loss was 100 mL (ra…
Hysteroscopic Isthmoplasty: Step-by-Step Technique
2018
Study Objective To demonstrate our technique for surgical hysteroscopy performed with a standard-size resectoscope or miniresectoscope in 3 cases of isthmocele. Design Step-by-step demonstration of the technique using slides, pictures, and video (educative video) (Canadian Task Force classification III). Setting Isthmocele is a characteristic semidiverticular anomaly of the anterior isthmic wall of the uterus, located at the site of a previous cesarean delivery scar. The etiopathogenesis of isthmocele remains poorly understood, although several hypotheses have been proposed. Factors that may possibly play a role in niche development include a very low incision through cervical tissue, inade…
Robotic Radical Hysterectomy After Concomitant Chemoradiation in Locally Advanced Cervical Cancer: A Prospective Phase II Study
2016
Study Objective To assess the feasibility of total robotic radical surgery (TRRS) in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) who receive chemoradiation therapy (CT/RT). Design A prospective (preplanned) study of a nonrandomized controlled trial (Canadian Task Force classification level 2). Setting Catholic University of the Sacred Hearth, Rome, Italy. Patients Between September 2013 and January 2016, a total of 40 patients with LACC (Fédération Internationale de Gynécologie et d'Obstétrique stage IB2–III) were enrolled in the study. Interventions Robotic radical hysterectomy (RRH) plus pelvic and/or aortic lymphadenectomy was attempted within 6 weeks after CT/RT. The feasibili…
