Positive Youth Development in Bulgaria, Italy, Norway and Romania: Testing the Factorial Structure and Measurement Invariance of the 5Cs Model
2021
This chapter applies the 5Cs model of PYD comprising competence, confidence, character, connection and caring among 1403 youth (M = 18.91 years) in Bulgaria (n = 196), Italy (n = 354), Norway (n = 564) and Romania (n = 289). These countries offer a novel and unique context to apply PYD as related comparative work with youth samples is rare across Eastern (Bulgaria and Romania), Southern (Italy) and Northern Europe (Norway). Further, Bulgaria and Romania are emerging nations following the collapse of the communism in late 1980s in contrast to Italy being a traditionally patriarchal country and social equity driven Norway. The chapter presents an empirical example that evaluates the factorial…
APPLICAZIONE DI CRITERI E INDICATORI DELLA CERTIFICAZIONE PEFC DI GESTIONE FORESTALE SOSTENIBILE: DUE CASI STUDIO A CONFRONTO NEL TERRITORIO SICILIANO
2018
Sicily currently has no forest areas with certification of sustainable forest management. This work analyzes the possibility of applying the criteria and indicators of PEFC certification of sustainable forest management in two study-cases: the municipal forest of Bivona (AG) and a forest area in the Madonie Mountains (PA). Both are representative of different and important Sicilian forest ecosystems. This analysis highlights the main weaknesses related to current forest management practices and the inadequate consultation with stakeholders.
Past as Future in Adaptive Buildings: Climatic Adaptation in Ancient Constructions
2018
Increasingly today we talk about sustainable architecture or, better yet, about adaptive architecture as something innovative. Looking at the past, however, it is possible to find numerous examples of architecture that adapts to the climatic conditions of the place with special devices or natural materials. Starting from the ancient Romans and the ancient peoples of the Middle East, up to the newer system to create energy by exploiting natural resources, are various the adaptive systems of the past. All have in common the respect for the environment, communicating with it sustainably, and optimizing available resources. This paper focuses on some of these systems highlighting the merits.

Long-Term Ecological Research in Latvia
2005
The article describes the National Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Network of Latvia, which includes five study sites and eight research projects. It is supported by the Latvian Council of Sciences. The main directions of the research are impacts of climate warming and anthropogenic factors on terrestrial and freshwater communities and ecosystems. Characteristics of research sites are presented. The main results of the long-term investigations and their implementation in ecological management projects are described.
Living with climate change: avoiding conflict through adaptation in Malawi
2015
Abstract. In recent years, research on climate change and human security has received much attention among policy makers and academia alike. Communities in the Global South that rely on an intact resource base will especially be affected by predicted changes in temperature and precipitation. The objective of this article is to better understand under what conditions local communities can adapt to anticipated impacts of climate change and avoid conflict over the loss of resources. The empirical part of the paper answers the question to what extent local communities in the Chilwa Basin in Malawi have experienced climate change and how they are affected by it. Further, it assesses one of Malaw…
