Water Conflict and Water Management in the Middle East
2004
“Water is Life”: this is often forgotten in countries with abundant water ressources. As a ressource it only gains importance once it is in short supply or once its quality declines. In the case of shortage the battle for water becomes inevitable. At the moment we have up to 200 conflicts of border-crossing water systems in the world. The Middle East is considered to be a typical example of this politically significant problem
Dissemination and national and international impact factors of spanish journals
2008
Cropland and grassland management
2014
According to the latest National Inventory, the Italian agricultural sector is a source of GHGs with 34.5 Mt of CO2 eq in 2009, corresponding to 7 % of the total emissions (excluding LULUCF). In particular, more than half (19.1 Mt of CO2 eq) are N2O emissions from soils. Although the national methodology is in accordance with Tier 1 and 2 approaches proposed by the IPCC (2006), still empirical emission factors are used to assess the emission from fertilizer (e.g. 0.0125 kg N2O–N kg−1 N from synthetic fertilizers). Disaggregated data at sub-national level, including models and inventory measurement systems required by higher order methods (i.e. Tier 3), are not available in Italy so far and …
Enzymatic biodiesel: Challenges and opportunities
2014
The chemical-catalyzed transesterification of vegetable oils to biodiesel has been industrially adopted due to its high conversion rates and low production time. However, this process suffers from several inherent drawbacks related to energy-intensive and environmentally unfriendly processing steps such as catalyst and product recovery, and waste water treatment. This has led to the development of the immobilized enzyme catalyzed process for biodiesel production which is characterized by certain environmental and economical advantages over the conventional chemical method. These include room-temperature reaction conditions, elimination of treatment costs associated with recovery of chemical…
Gene ontology-based annotation and comparative analysis of proteins extracted from proteomics of 100 breast cancer patients.
2009
Background: Current clinical parameters for breast cancer diagnosis and therapy are: tumour size, axillary lymph node status, histological grading and presence or absence of metastases. Prognostic/predictive properties, such as oestrogen and progesterone receptor status, and human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER-2/neu) status are currently used for therapeutic decision. Conversely, it is now emerging that the number of genetic mutations and epigenetic deregulations in cancer is far more higher than previously thought. Therefore, proteomic screening for differential protein expression in subsets of tumor samples is an essential tool for generating data bases and biomarker discovery. Th…

Teaching Competences Through ICTs in an English Degree Programme in a Spanish Setting
2012
In this chapter I shall describe the ways in which a group of lecturers in English language and linguistics have attempted to help students acquire competencies using ICTs in an English Studies degree programme in Spain. The introduction of competence-based learning constitutes a major paradigm shift brought about by the convergence of degree systems in the European Higher Education Area, and is part of a concerted effort to make our degrees less teacher-centred with a view to giving students greater opportunities to participate in their own learning process, both inside and outside the classroom. I will outline how general and discipline-specific competences are acquired through the use of…
Plant visibility through mobile learning? Implementation and evaluation of an interactiveFlower Huntin a botanic garden
2017
Plants have an enormous importance for life on earth but are often overlooked. This phenomenon called plant blindness is reinforced as students prefer to spend their recreation time with modern med...

The key stages in the history of the living world may be summed up as follows: formation of the major types of body plan at the start of the Cambrian, with the appearance of the last, the vertebrates, during the upper Cambrian. Thereafter evolution took place within these plans through “modulations” exploiting a number of possibilities.
