Why do Third Sector Employees Intend to Remain or Leave their Workplace?
2016
Third sector employees have claimed to enjoy high job satisfaction and low turnover intentions because their work is considered intrinsically rewarding. Employees have strong motivation for public service and they consider the organization’s goals as their own. This makes work meaningful and thus reduces turnover intentions. Changes in the third sector institutional environment, however, have intensified the working environment. This probably undermines job quality and thus increases turnover intentions. The analysis conducted among Finnish third sector employees showed that third sector employees report more turnover intentions than their counterparts in the public or private sector. This …
Spanish Validation of the Leader Empowering Behavior Questionnaire (LEBQ)
2019
The concept of empowering leadership has attracted widespread academic and practical interest and different questionnaires have been developed to measure it. However, there are no instruments to measure empowering leadership in the Spanish language. This article presents the translation, adaptation, and validation of a scale to measure this construct. In addition, it analyzes the relationship between managers’ empowering leadership and employees’ job satisfaction. In turn, the study analyzes whether employees who participate in a greater number of continuous improvement programs have supervisors who favor more empowering behaviors. A total of 739 participants with various occupations from d…
Long-term properties and end-of-life of polymers from renewable resources
2017
[EN] The long-term properties and end-of-life of polymers are not antagonist issues. They actually are inherently linked by the duality between durability and degradation. The control of the service-todisposal pathway at useful performance, along with low-impact disposal represents an added-value. Therefore, the routes of design, production, and discarding of bio-based polymers must be carefully strategized. In this sense, the combination of proper valorisation techniques, i.e. material, energetic and/ or biological at the most appropriate stage should be targeted. Thus, the consideration of the end-of-life of a material for a specific application, instead of the end-of-life of a material s…
Inovācijas, pētniecība, zinātne
2013
Quantum computing algorithms and peat extracts, a Chinese dictionary and skin stem cells, carbon nanowire switches and a catalogue of stars – the research results produced by the University of Latvia scientists are as varied as the directions of studies at the University of Latvia. Our goal is to provide science-based higher education in the key areas of consequence for Latvia’s people, economy, nature and public health, to make Latvia known in the world through our achievements in science and innovation. Over the past few years the research of the UL scientists has been extremely productive, largely due to the European Union funds to support graduate and doctoral students, new research gro…
Spanish Secondary School Students' Notions on the Causes and Consequences of Climate Change
2010
This paper is part of an extensive study of secondary school students' preconceived ideas about climate change. Here, we undertake a survey in the province of Valencia (Spain) to ascertain secondary school students' notions of the causes and consequences of climate change. Results show, among other things, that students clearly relate the misuse of motor vehicles and factory emissions to the problem. However, the obvious correlation with household energy use is not observed. The usual confusion with other environmental problems, such as the hole in the ozone layer, as described in previous studies, is also detected. Students know almost no greenhouse gases other than CO2, while the socio‐ec…
Forest biorefineries – A business opportunity for the Finnish forest cluster
2011
Abstract Bioenergy and biomass-based products offer the greatest new opportunities for diversifying business in the forest cluster. In particular, biorefineries, which can be integrated into the pulp and paper industry, seem to have immense future potential. This article aims to explore the biorefinery concept and related new products and business operations, as well as new business strategies and company models, which are part of the biorefinery value chain. These factors, which contribute to the establishment and success of forest biorefineries, were examined using internet survey responses and compared between Scandinavia, North America and South America. This article looks at the result…
EUROPEAN UNION EMISSIONS TRADING SYSTEM’S IMPACT ON LATVIA’S COMPETITIVENESS
2012
The goal of this paper is to analyse the general impact of the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) on Latvia’s competitiveness. The hypothesis of this paper – the EU ETS in past did not had a significant impact on Latvia’s competitiveness. At the beginning of the paper the EU ETS mechanism is discussed in the context of M.E. Porter’s identified principal factors determining state’s competitiveness. Afterwards the EU ETS operation in Latvia is described and its impact on Latvia’s competitiveness is analysed. The analysis is based on statistical data about Latvia’s 79 companies and their operation in 2005-2010, inter alia, allocations and transactions of European Union Allowances…
Energy-saving analysis of hydraulic hybrid excavator based on common pressure rail
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: The Scientific World Journal. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/560694 Open Access Energy-saving research of excavators is becoming one hot topic due to the increasing energy crisis and environmental deterioration recently. Hydraulic hybrid excavator based on common pressure rail (HHEC) provides an alternative with electric hybrid excavator because it has high power density and environment friendly and easy to modify based on the existing manufacture process. This paper is focused on the fuel consumption of HHEC and the actuator dynamic response to assure that the new system can save energy without sacrificin…
