Using evolutionary algorithms to model relativistic jets

2019

High-resolution Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry observations of NGC 1052 show a two sided jet with several regions of enhanced emission and a clear emission gap between the two jets. This gap shrinks with increasing frequency and vanishes around $\nu\sim43$ GHz. The observed structures are due to both the macroscopic fluid dynamics interacting with the surrounding ambient medium including an obscuring torus and the radiation microphysics. In this paper we investigate the possible physical conditions in relativistic jets of NGC 1052 by directly modelling the observed emission and spectra via state-of-the-art special-relativistic hydrodynamic (SRHD) simulations and radiative transfer calcula…

Characterization of entropy measures against data loss: Application to EEG records

2012

This study is aimed at characterizing three signal entropy measures, Approximate Entropy (ApEn), Sample Entropy (SampEn) and Multiscale Entropy (MSE) over real EEG signals when a number of samples are randomly lost due to, for example, wireless data transmission. The experimental EEG database comprises two main signal groups: control EEGs and epileptic EEGs. Results show that both SampEn and ApEn enable a clear distinction between control and epileptic signals, but SampEn shows a more robust performance over a wide range of sample loss ratios. MSE exhibits a poor behavior for ratios over a 40% of sample loss. The EEG non-stationary and random trends are kept even when a great number of samp…

Training for gender equity: an experience through choreographies in Early Childhood Education

2020

On Temporal Aspects in Cross-Cultural e-Collaboration Between Finland and Japan Research Teams

2018

Time is an essential dimension in cross-cultural e-collaboration among research project teams. Understanding temporal aspects and project dynamics in cross-cultural research e-collaboration and related processes can improve team members' skills in cross-cultural communication and increase their cultural competence. The present case cultures are Finnish and Japanese, and the case universities are the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) and Keio University (Japan). Three issues are addressed in this article. First, cultural dimensions and time models in the cross-cultural e-collaboration context are discussed. Second, temporal aspects related to e-collaboration activities are introduced. Third,…

Query expansion and semantic visualization in information system cooperations : methods and tools for information retrieval

2010

This thesis presents approaches and tools for information retrieval. Our work is part of a cooperation system based on ontologies called OWSCIS (Ontology and Web Service based Cooperation of Information Sources). We treat the problem of information retrieval by providing an enrichment method called QUEXME (QUery EXpansion MEthod) of queries based on analysis of user behavior and using the concept importance notion with regards to query. We also discussed the problem of visualization in the OWSCIS system offering a architecture of service visualization. It is composed of three modules: the request, enrichment and results. The approaches proposed in this thesis have been prototyped and the te…

Preface of the Workshop Organizers

2021

The First International Workshop on Requirement Engineering for Software startups and Emerging Technologies (RESET) is a part of IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference 2021, held on 20th September, 2021. The workshop brought together requirements engineering researchers and practitioners to discuss the need for adapting conventional requirement engineering artifacts (i.e. requirement definition, metrics), processes and practices to software projects in startup context and/or dealing with emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain etc. Further, the workshop also presents research findings about designing AI powered software systems ethically. The work…

2021

Health information-seeking behavior is the process of gathering information about health and disease and can be influential for health-related perception and behavior. University students are an important target group for prevention and health promotion and largely belong to an age group that is considered to play a leading role in propagating the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in Germany. The paper deals with students' health information-seeking behavior before and during the corona crisis, aiming to give insights into its determinants and implications. Using the example of a large German comprehensive university and based on two cross-sectional surveys in the summer of 2019 (n = 4,351) and 2020 (n =…

Consumers’ acceptance of information and communications technology in tourism: A review

2017

The review provides a conceptual framework on e-tourism research.Research on e-tourism is grouped into three classifications.Research on these three groups are uneven.Synthesis of theories, theories and frameworks provided. The impact of information and communications technology (ICT) in tourism (e-tourism) has altered the ways tourism services are accessed and consumed. Ubiquitous and highly innovative ICTs provide different channels for consumers to use tourism services; thus, studies on e-tourism are numerous and fragmented. Different factors account for how consumers embrace these channels. The purpose of this study is to review studies on consumers acceptance or adoption of e-tourism i…

Semantic technologies for industry: From knowledge modeling and integration to intelligent applications

2013

Artificial Intelligence technologies are growingly used within several software systems ranging from Web services to mobile applications. It is by no doubt true that the more AI algorithms and methods are used the more they tend to depart from a pure "AI" spirit and end to refer to the sphere of standard software. In a sense, AI seems strongly connected with ideas, methods and tools that are not (yet) used by the general public. On the contrary, a more realistic view of it would be a rich and pervading set of successful paradigms and approaches. Industry is currently perceiving semantic technologies as a key contribution of AI to innovation. In this paper a survey of current industrial expe…

User session level diverse reranking of search results

2018

Most Web search diversity approaches can be categorized as Document Level Diversification (DocLD), Topic Level Diversification (TopicLD) or Term Level Diversification (TermLD). DocLD selects the relevant documents with minimal content overlap to each other. It does not take the coverage of query subtopics into account. TopicLD solves this by modeling query subtopics explicitly. However, the automatic mining of query subtopics is difficult. TermLD tries to cover as many query topic terms as possible, which reduces the task of finding a query's subtopics into finding a set of representative topic terms. In this paper, we propose a novel User Session Level Diversification (UserLD) approach bas…
