Recuerdos figurados. "Fotos de familia" en Sicilia

2020

“Life is not what you have lived, but what you remember and how you remem- ber it to tell”. Taking cue from the words of Gabriel García Márquez, the essay analyzes a gallery of photographic images portraying “family photos”, made in Sicily between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, which are placed in an inter- mediate space between oral and written traditions becoming “biographical object”. The analysis of the photographic corpus searches for the connections between the different events that the image has gone through (production, transmission, fruition). It is in his “life story”, in his passage from one generation to the other, from one type of represe…

Il Bingo. Consociazioni fra disaffiliati in una sala giochi siciliana

2017

Analysing customers attending a Sicilian Bingo hall, the article identifies a subsidiary kind of sociability for those people who, due to traumatic events such as losing a job, the death of a spouse or divorce, have experienced a progressive estrangement from their usual social life, and the consequent weakening or loss of bonds of solidarity. The concepts of «consociation» and «disaffiliation» are the interpretative frames of analysis adopted by the author to examine the material collected from 30 semi-structured interviews with players selected from a larger sample of 160 frequent customers of the Bingo hall in the city of Marsala. The Bingo hall allows the creation of alternative forms o…

Questua, sacrificio e banchetto rituale nelle feste campestri della Sardegna

2019

The begging of money, food and livestock, the sacrifice of the latter a…

Le pratiche magiche tra passato e presente

2015

Both in the contemporary Sicilian magic and folkloric reality and in the Egyptian civilization, though with different historical and cultural assumptions, the beliefs which underlie the magic and religious rituals and the ritual symbols substantiating them (acts, words, items, sounds, etc.) show the need to gain control over the mishaps of this world and to command life processes. They reveal the urge to solve the states of individual or collective crisis, to overcome pain, illnesses, death setting up a positive dialogue with supernatural forces and trascendental entities, variously imagined and represented. In order to escape actuality in obiecto, man has, in intellectu, constantly and arb…
