This paper presents a new analysis of the speech delivered by Cicero on behalf of Milo (pro Milone), who had been charged with the murder of Clodius. It suggests that Cicero’s defensive strategy aimed from the beginning to get an acquittal on two different grounds. The first one was based on the reasoning that Clodius’ murder was committed lawfully in self-defense. The second one was based on the argument that Clodius’ killing was in the best interest of the state. Both do not have to be conflicting. Even if the spoken version of the speech achieved just the first aim, the second aim, prevented by the interruption of Cicero’s speech due to the screams of the Clodian mob present at the trial…

Artykuł stanowi próbę przedstawienia najistotniejszych cech pisarstwa Ricardy Huch z jej wczesnej fazy twórczości. Z metodologicznego punktu widzenia podstawę do badań stanowią: biografia autorki oraz jej zakorzenienie w historii myśli wczesnego romantyzmu niemieckiego. W myśl wczesnych romantyków, a w szczególności Novalisa, Huch dążyła do swoistej syntezy między faktami historycznymi a sposobem postrzegania rzeczywistości przez piszącego artystę – ten jednocześnie myśląc o jemu współczesnych, kieruje się zamysłem pedagogicznym, którego nadrzędnym celem jest przestrzeganie zasad humanitaryzmu w społeczeństwie.

Il contributo è dedicato all’impiego iconografico della proceritas, l’alta statura, nell’arte ufficiale romana. Per indicarne l’importanza, già nella pittura funeraria etrusca è noto l’uso di raffigurare personaggi diversamente dimensionati. Nell’arte romana tale fenomeno è ben conosciuto nelle produzioni private mentre è più raro sui monumenti pubblici. In questo tipo di opere e in analogia al suo significato in Etruria, la proceritas ha la funzione di mettere in risalto una particolare figura. In the congress organised by Marilena Casella and Lietta De Salvo with the support of the Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti, moments and themes of Roman history of great importance are presented and retraced, in relation to which the interest of the contributions of the speakers is twofold: the angle of observation is in fact placed both on the topics as such, for the weight they had in the history of a civilisation, and on their reception and reworking, which makes it possible to speak of an era that is reflected in other eras, of events that integrate their meaning by handing it down to subsequent generations and contexts, maintaining their vitality.
