AbstractOmmatidial rotation is one of the most important events for correct patterning of the Drosophila eye. Although several signaling pathways are involved in this process, few genes have been shown to specifically affect it. One of them is nemo (nmo), which encodes a MAP-like protein kinase that regulates the rate of rotation throughout the entire process, and serves as a link between core planar cell polarity (PCP) factors and the E-cadherin–β-catenin complex. Conservation of optical purity of amino acids: a principal problem in biochemical and proto-biochemical systems.

Dor L-amino acids, regardless of their state (peptide-bound or free, in the solid state or in aqueous solution), tend to racemize. In a living cell this racemization is usually compensated by specific degradation and replacement of the unwanted polypeptides that contain the wrong enantiomers. But a few long-lived proteins that are synthesized at or near birth are never replaced. Well investigated is the racemization of L-aspartic acid at a rate of 0.1 to 1.14 per cent per year in proteins from lenses and dentine. Molecule non-radiative coupling to a metallic nanosphere: an optical theorem treatment.

The non-radiative coupling of a molecule to a metallic spherical particle is approximated by a sum involving particle quasistatic polarizabilities. We demonstrate that energy transfer from molecule to particle satisfies the optical theorem if size effects corrections are properly introduced into the quasistatic polarizabilities. We hope that this simplified model gives valuable information on the coupling mechanism between molecule and metallic nanos-tructures available for, e.g., surface enhanced spectroscopy signal analysis.

Third-sector job quality: evidence from Finland

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study the perceived job quality and job satisfaction among third-sector employees and compare job quality in the third, public and private sector. Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on the quality of work life (QWL) survey data gathered by Statistics Finland. The QWL data are complemented with data set collected among third-sector employees. In the sector comparisons percentage shares were used to compare different dimensions of job quality between the sectors. Limiting neutrino magnetic moments with Borexino Phase-II solar neutrino data

A search for the solar neutrino effective magnetic moment has been performed using data from 1291.5 days exposure during the second phase of the Borexino experiment. No significant deviations from the expected shape of the electron recoil spectrum from solar neutrinos have been found, and a new upper limit on the effective neutrino magnetic moment of $\mu_{\nu}^{eff}$ $<$ 2.8$\cdot$10$^{-11}$ $\mu_{B}$ at 90\% c.l. has been set using constraints on the sum of the solar neutrino fluxes implied by the radiochemical gallium experiments.Using the limit for the effective neutrino moment, new limits for the magnetic moments of the neutrino flavor states, and for the elements of the neutrino magne…

Global and Local Effects of Rotation: Observational Aspects

In the paper we discussed the observational aspects of rotation in the Universe on different scales. We show dependence between the angular momentum of the structures and their size. The presented observational situation is that the galaxies, their pairs and compact groups have a non-vanishing angular momentum. In the structures of mass corresponding to groups of galaxies, this feature has not been found, while in the clusters and superclusters alignment of galaxy orientation has been actually found.
