Influence of ground tire rubber on the transient loading response of a peat biofilter
2010
Abstract The effect of using ground tire rubber (GTR) as an adsorptive material in the removal of a 2:1:1 weight mixture of n-butyl acetate, toluene and m-xylene by using a peat biofilter under different intermittent conditions was investigated. The performance of two identical size biofilters, one packed with fibrous peat alone and the other with a 3:1 (vol) fibrous peat and GTR mixture, was examined for a period of four months. Partition coefficients of both materials were measured. Values of 53, 118 and 402 L kg −1 were determined for n-butyl acetate, toluene and m-xylene in peat, respectively; and values of 40, 609 and 3035 L kg −1 were measured for the same compounds in GTR. Intermitte…
Use of Ultrasound in Reconditioning by Welding of Tools Used in the Process of Regenerating Rubber
2018
Addressing the problem of reconditioning large parts is of particular importance, due to their value and to the fact that the technologies for their reconditioning are very complex. The tools used to refine regenerated rubber which measure 660 mm in diameter and 2130 mm in length suffer from a rather fast dimensional wear. Within this research, the authors looked for a welding reconditioning procedure that would allow a very good adhesion between the deposited material layer and the base material. In this regard, the MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding process was used, but the ultrasonic activation of the welding process was also considered. Thus, the wire used for welding was activated conside…
Constructive Optimization of Vulcanization Installations in Order to Improve the Performance of Conveyor Belts
2019
Conveyor belts of special importance must have superior mechanical characteristics. The joining by vulcanization of the conveyor belts allows to obtain superior performances, but it has been found that at the vulcanizing joint of the conveyor belts, there is a &ldquo
Comparison between bitumen modified with crumb tyre rubber and styrene butadiene styrene
2009
The improvements in terms of mechanical properties due to the use of polymers to modify bitumens in road paving applications have already been widely demonstrated. The aim of this paper is to show how the rheology and the performance of a bituminous binder mixed with crumb rubber recycled from used tyres (CR-MB), could be comparable with a styrene butadiene styrene (SBS-MB) created with the same base binder and currently used for road applications. Physical, chemical and performance characterization followed by rheological and storage stability analyses have been undertaken as the basis for the comparison. The results of the investigation indicate that the blended CR-MB shows large improvem…
Analytical approach for the mix design optimisation of bituminous mixtures with crumb rubber
2018
The present paper provides a basis for defining a mix design method specifically tailored to rubberised asphalt that takes into account the behaviour of crumb rubber. An analytical approach to quantifying the recovered deformation of crumb rubber in the post-compaction phase has been developed in order to adjust the number of gyrations proposed by the Superpave method for compacting specimens of hot mix asphalt using a Superpave gyratory compactor. The maximum allowable amount of rubber has been calculated. Finally, a step-by-step protocol has been proposed in order to fabricate and compact crumb rubber modified mixtures with the gyratory compactor.
Analysis of the crystallization behaviour of PBT-rich PBT/PET blends under processing conditions
2007
Among the high‐performance polyesters blends PBT/PET blends are expected to exhibit remarkable properties as far as the crystallization behaviour is concerned. The solidification behaviour of a 60/40 w/w PBT/PET blend was studied in a wide range of cooling conditions, according to a Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) procedure developed by the authors, aiming to emulate the typical conditions encountered in polymer processing. A set of several samples characterized by an homogeneous structure was prepared by solidification from the melt through spray cooling, and the resulting structure and properties were evaluated by density, Micro Hardness (MH), Wide Angle X‐ray Diffraction (WAXD) m…
Partial Discharge on-line measures in cable's EPR insulation
2004
In this paper, an experimental study, carried out on an operating MV cable, is presented. The aim is to identify, locate and characterize defects in the cable's EPR (ethylene-propylene copolymer rubber) insulation. Direct partial discharge measurements have been compared to those obtained by high frequency electromagnetic field measures. The latter have been carried out using a sensor which does not require any galvanic connection with the system under test and that performs an intrinsic localization of the defect. Moreover, an analysis of an MV cable junction has been carried out using the same tools.
Load Response and Finite Element Modelling of Bonded Loading Hoses
2014
Steel reinforced bonded vulcanized rubber loading hoses are frequently used in offshore oil loading systems. The hoses are used as offloading system between platforms and shuttle tankers and represent a flexible economical feasible solution for hydrocarbon transfer. The reliability of these hoses throughout the service life is an important issue both with respect to operational availability and with respect to environmental safety. Hence, the load bearing capacity of these hoses and the fatigue endurance become matters of concern and important design topics. Due to the large deformation of these hoses and the complicated composite structure in the hose wall, the hoses are difficult to analy…
New simplified approach for obtaining a reliable plateau value in fatigue analysis of bituminous materials
2017
The Plateau Value (PV) based on the Ratio of Dissipated Energy Change (RDEC) approach has been proven to provide a unique relationship with the fatigue life, N-f, independent of loading mode, temperature and frequency. In this paper, a new simplified approach is proposed to compute the unique energy parameter PV. The results of this study show that applying the proposed method allows a unique fatigue power law to be produced and eliminates the ambiguity and variability in calculating PV. However, the study also shows that the PV-N-f fatigue curves for bituminous materials are dependent on material type which is contradictory to other studies dealing with PV. The study also highlights the im…
A new approach to the design of a speed-torque-controlled rubber V-belt variator
2005
This paper presents a new model for a torque-speed-sensing rubber V-belt variator. The actuators are of the centrifugal roller kind on the driver side and a helical torque cam plus a compression-torsion spring on the driven side. The equations permit designing the actuator geometry in order to keep the transmissible torque as close as possible to the torque request in the whole operative field. Moreover, a procedure is suggested for the most proper design of an automatic variator of this kind. It permits choosing the required variogram of the transmission, i.e. the matching between the engine and the transmission, and designing the actuators: roller mass, housing shape, contact plate angle…
