Experimental modeling for a natural landing of fuzzy sets in new domains
2015
In this paper we plan to touch upon (and briefly discuss) some (out of the many) contributions done by Enric Trillas to Fuzzy Sets Theory. We have carefully chosen, from the abundant panorama we have been allowed to gaze at in the years, two different but intertwined topics of a more methodological character, which—as such—are, obviously, not only outside the topics massively developed by the scientific community in this field but also not in the mainstream of Enric’s investigations. We picked up them, however, since we believe that they are related to a crucial problem for the further developments of fuzzy research in the subsequent years. In this perspective, they represent a very signifi…
PBAT Based Composites Reinforced with Microcrystalline Cellulose Obtained from Softwood Almond Shells
2021
This study explores the processability, mechanical, and thermal properties of biocompostable composites based on poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) as polymer matrix and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) derived from softwood almond (Prunus dulcis) shells (as-MCC) as filler at two different weight concentration, i.e., 10 wt% and 20 wt%. The materials were processed by melt mixing and a commercial MCC (c-MCC) was used as filler comparison. The fibrillar shape of as-MCC particles was found to change the rheological behavior of PBAT, particularly at the highest concentration. The melt mixing processing allowed obtaining a uniform dispersion of both kinds of fillers, slightly reduci…
A method to transform a nonlocal model into a gradient one within elasticity and plasticity
2014
Abstract A method based on the principle of the virtual power (PVP) is presented, by which a mechanical problem of nonlocal elasticity, or plasticity, is transformed into one of gradient nature. Different Taylor series expansion techniques are applied to the driving local strain fields of the nonlocal problem, either full spatial expansion within the bulk volume, or uni-directional expansion along the normal to the thin boundary layer. This, at the limit when the boundary layer thickness tends to zero, makes the PVP of the nonlocal model transform itself into one featuring a counterpart gradient model. Also, for a class of “associated” nonlocal and gradient elasticity models (i.e. the kerne…
Effect of UD carbon on the specific mechanical properties of glass mat composites for marine applications
2009
In this work the influence of a uniaxial carbon fabric layer on the mechanical performances of a glass mat/epoxy composite used for marine applications has been studied. All the structures have been made, at room temperature, by vacuum bagging technique. Tension and flexural tests have been carried out in order to evaluate the specific mechanical properties of the composite and to compare these with those of the marine aluminium alloy 6016-T4. The glass composites have higher specific strength but lower specific modulus than aluminium alloy. To increase the specific modulus of the composites, each layer of glass mat has been replaced with a layer of uniaxial carbon fabric. In addition, a s…
Analysis of mechanical behaviour of wood species by speckle interferometry
2007
The understanding of the mechanical behaviour of wood is a very important task in modern structural engineering. This is due to the increasing role played by wood structures in modern architecture as well as to its use in the restoration of ancient buildings. However, solid mechanics of wood is very difficult since it is a complex, polymer-based, cellular, inhomogeneous material. Moreover, at the cellular scale wood is not a continuum due to the presence of vascular vacuums and it can be regarded as an anisotropic material. Conversely, at a macroscopic scale when the analysis is carried out on a structural member which is large in comparison to the size of cell, wood is usually considered a…

INDAGINI DIAGNOSTICHE PROPEDEUTICHE AL RESTAURO DELLA SALA DEI VENTI DI PALAZZO DEI NORMANNI A PALERMO
2019
Transitivity in coherence-based probability logic
2016
We study probabilistically informative (weak) versions of transitivity by using suitable definitions of defaults and negated defaults in the setting of coherence and imprecise probabilities. We represent p-consistent sequences of defaults and/or negated defaults by g-coherent imprecise probability assessments on the respective sequences of conditional events. Moreover, we prove the coherent probability propagation rules for Weak Transitivity and the validity of selected inference patterns by proving p-entailment of the associated knowledge bases. Finally, we apply our results to study selected probabilistic versions of classical categorical syllogisms and construct a new version of the squa…
Probabilistic interpretations of the square of opposition
We investigate the square of opposition from a probabilistic point of view. Probability allows for dealing with exceptions and uncertainty. We will interpret the corners of the square by means of (precise or imprecise) conditional probability assessments. They will be defined within the framework of coherence, which originally goes back to de Finetti. In this framework probabilities are conceived as degrees of belief, where conditional probability is defined as a primitive concept. Coherence allows for dealing with partial and imprecise assessments. Moreover, the coherence approach is especially suitable for dealing with zero antecedent probabilities (i.e., here conditioning events may have…
Square of Opposition Under Coherence
2016
Various semantics for studying the square of opposition have been proposed recently. So far, only (Gilio et al., 2016) studied a probabilistic version of the square where the sentences were interpreted by (negated) defaults. We extend this work by interpreting sentences by imprecise (set-valued) probability assessments on a sequence of conditional events. We introduce the acceptability of a sentence within coherence-based probability theory. We analyze the relations of the square in terms of acceptability and show how to construct probabilistic versions of the square of opposition by forming suitable tripartitions. Finally, as an application, we present a new square involving generalized qu…
