Valorisation of industrial iron oxide waste to produce magnetic barium hexaferrite
2016
Barium M-type hexagonal ferrite (BaM, BaFe12O19) is an immensely important magnetic material, which we have successfully made from the simple valorisation of Fe-rich industrial waste from steel wire drawing, with addition of BaCO3 and heating in air to 1000 degrees C. The optimum ratio of Fe. Ba (producing 86 wt% BaM) was found to be 11: 1 (non-stoichiometric), and secondary phases of alpha-Fe2O3 (non-magnetic) and ZnFe2O4 (poorly antiferromagnetic) were always present. This material consisted of small submicron platelets. A hard magnetic ferrite was produced with Ms=48.6 A m(2) kg(-1) and H-c=211.5 kA m(-1). The highest density was achieved by sintering samples with Fe: Ba ratios of 11: 1 …
On the use of fractional calculus for the probabilistic characterization of random variables
2009
In this paper, the classical problem of the probabilistic characterization of a random variable is re-examined. A random variable is usually described by the probability density function (PDF) or by its Fourier transform, namely the characteristic function (CF). The CF can be further expressed by a Taylor series involving the moments of the random variable. However, in some circumstances, the moments do not exist and the Taylor expansion of the CF is useless. This happens for example in the case of $\alpha$--stable random variables. Here, the problem of representing the CF or the PDF of random variables (r.vs) is examined by introducing fractional calculus. Two very remarkable results are o…
Path integral solution for non-linear system enforced by Poisson White Noise
2008
Abstract In this paper the response in terms of probability density function of non-linear systems under Poisson White Noise is considered. The problem is handled via path integral (PI) solution that may be considered as a step-by-step solution technique in terms of probability density function. First the extension of the PI to the case of Poisson White Noise is derived, then it is shown that at the limit when the time step becomes an infinitesimal quantity the Kolmogorov–Feller (K–F) equation is fully restored enforcing the validity of the approximations made in obtaining the conditional probability appearing in the Chapman Kolmogorov equation (starting point of the PI). Spectral counterpa…
Probabilistic response of nonlinear systems under combined normal and Poisson white noise via path integral method
2011
In this paper the response in terms of probability density function of nonlinear systems under combined normal and Poisson white noise is considered. The problem is handled via a Path Integral Solution (PIS) that may be considered as a step-by-step solution technique in terms of probability density function. A nonlinear system under normal white noise, Poissonian white noise and under the superposition of normal and Poisson white noise is performed through PIS. The spectral counterpart of the PIS, ruling the evolution of the characteristic functions is also derived. It is shown that at the limit when the time step becomes an infinitesimal quantity an equation ruling the evolution of the pro…
New Lignocellulosic Aristida adscensionis Fibers as Novel Reinforcement for Composite Materials: Extraction, Characterization and Weibull Distributio…
2019
In this research, the Aristida adscensionis fibers (AAFs) were taken out from the plants and its fundamental properties anlayzed for the first time. The AAFs were characterized and compared with other natural fibers by the use of physico-chemical analysis and various characterization techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, NMR, TGA, SEM and AFM. Chemical analysis showed that A. adscensionis fibers have a high cellulose content of 70.78% whereas the contents of lignin and wax are equal to 8.91% and 2.26%, respectively. The FT-IR, XRD and NMR analysis confirmed that AAFs are rich in cellulose content with CI and CS equal to 58.9% and 11.5 nm, respectively. Pycnometer analysis allowed to estimate a den…
Carboxylated-xyloglucan and peptide amphiphile co-assembly in wound healing.
2021
Abstract Hydrogel wound dressings can play critical roles in wound healing protecting the wound from trauma or contamination and providing an ideal environment to support the growth of endogenous cells and promote wound closure. This work presents a self-assembling hydrogel dressing that can assist the wound repair process mimicking the hierarchical structure of skin extracellular matrix. To this aim, the co-assembly behaviour of a carboxylated variant of xyloglucan (CXG) with a peptide amphiphile (PA-H3) has been investigated to generate hierarchical constructs with tuneable molecular composition, structure, and properties. Transmission electron microscopy and circular dichroism at a low c…
Identification of stiffness, dissipation and input parameters of multi degree of freedom civil systems under unmeasured base excitations
2009
A time domain dynamic identification technique based on a statistical moment approach has been formulated for civil systems under base random excitations in the linear state. This technique is based on the use of classically damped models characterized by a mass proportional damping. By applying the Itô stochastic calculus, special algebraic equations that depend on the statistical moments of the response can be obtained. These equations can be used for the dynamic identification of the mechanical parameters that define the structural model, in the case of unmeasured input as well, and the identification of the input itself. Furthermore, the above equations demonstrate the possibility of id…
The durability of basalt fibres reinforced polymer (BFRP) panels for cladding
2015
The study focuses on two basalt composite laminate panels for cladding, produced by means of vacuum bagging technique. In particular, unidirectional and random basalt fabrics, with different areal weights, using epoxy resin as matrix, were used. According to the ISO 15686 methodology for the evaluation of durability, samples were subjected to cycles of artificial aging in climatic chamber and outdoor exposure, carrying out mechanical (i.e. quasi-static and dynamic) and calorimetric tests. The results show the effectiveness over time of produced basalt composite laminates and the initial increase of the mechanical performances after the first steps of accelerated aging.
Fuzziness, Cognition and Cybernetics: an outlook on future
2015
In the present paper, we connect some old reflections about the relationships existing between the theory of fuzzy sets and cybernetics with modern, contemporary analyses of the crucial (better: unavoidable) role that fuzziness plays in the attempts at scientifically describing aspects of information sciences. The connection, which has a basic conceptual origin, has been triggered also by the recent 50th anniversary of Norbert Wiener’ death which has been instrumental in looking again at some crucial aspects of the birth of information sciences in the midst of last Century. Fuzzy sets are an essential part of this revolution and share all the innovations as well as the difficulties of this …
