Vibration-based identification of mechanical properties of orthotropic arbitrarily shaped plates: Numerical and experimental assessment
2018
Abstract An innovative procedure is introduced for the identification of the mechanical parameters of orthotropic plates of arbitrary shape, under various boundary conditions, based on vibration data. The method employs a combination of a convenient Rayleigh-Ritz approach and Particle-Swarm Optimization to estimate elastic constants of the orthotropic material in a straightforward manner, without requiring computationally demanding iterative Finite Element analyses. Specifically, the pb-2 Rayleigh-Ritz procedure is extended and applied to deal with orthotropic plates, simplifying the approach to more easily treat generic plate shapes, taking advantage of the Green's theorem. The method is t…
Dynamic response of equivalent orthotropic plate model for stiffened plate: numerical-experimental assessment
2017
Abstract Over the last two decades, homogenization-based modeling techniques have attracted considerable attention. In fact, through these methods, structures such as corrugated or stiffened plates, commonly referred to as structurally orthotropic plates, can be approximately studied as equivalent flat plates with orthotropic behavior. Specifically, these homogenization techniques allow for the direct determination of the equivalent flexural and torsional rigidities which appear in the governing equation for the deflection of the equivalent orthotropic plate. It is worth noting that, the determined equivalent material properties retain the dependence on the geometric parameters of the origi…
Two-dimensional model of cross-flow electrodialysis units for the assessment of membrane deformation effects on the process performance
Fluid-structure interaction in electromembrane processes: modelling of membrane deformation, fluid dynamics and mass transfer
2018
In recent years, water and energy supply issues have boosted a noticeable interest in the scientific community on electromembrane processes such as electrodialysis and reverse electrodialysis. In order to gain an important place in the industrial market, technological challenges on various aspects are involved for the optimization of these processes. In this context, profiled membranes exhibit interesting performances and offer countless geometric alternatives. However, the mechanical behavior of the membranes and its interaction with fluid dynamics has been poorly investigated so far. In membrane-based processes, a trans-membrane pressure (Ptm) between the different solutions flowing throu…
Polyactide Biodegradable Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering Applications: Phase Separation-Based Techniques
2011
One of the most reliable techniques for the preparation of biodegradable scaffolds suitable for tissue engineering applications (e.g. regeneration of wounded/damaged tissues) is based on liquid/liquid phase separation of ternary solvent/antisolvent/polymer solutions. In particular, two phase separation protocols are examined here: Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) and Diffusion Induces Phase Separation (DIPS). According to the former protocol, a thermodynamically stable polymeric ternary solution is brought below its metastability/instability point (spinodal/binodal curve) by quench in a cooling medium: under opportune conditions, a foam-like structure is formed by nucleation and 3-…
Mechanical-fluid dynamics coupled model for profiled Ion Exchange Membranes design
2018
In this work, we developed an advanced model useful for the design of profiled IEMs, based on the coupled simulation of local mechanical deformations and of fluid dynamics and associated mass transport phenomena within deformed channels
A process model of electrodialysis including membrane deformation effects
2020
Electrodialysis (ED) is an electro-driven process that makes use of ion exchange membranes (IEMs) under an applied electric field. The main application of ED is the desalination for drinking water production. A transmembrane pressure (TMP) distribution may arise in ED stacks due to an uneven pressure distribution in the two fluid channels, thus causing membrane/channel deformation and flow redistribution. This can occur in large-scale non-parallel configurations, e.g. crossflow arrangements. Detrimental effects of membrane deformation have widely been studied with reference to several membrane processes. However, this aspect has been neglected in ED applications. In this work, a novel proce…

Modeling Alternatives Sustainable-Energy-Policy for the Supply Chain of Wind Power in Brazil.
2020
Renewable energy studies have received high attention in the last few years due the increasing deployment of alternatives such as wind, solar and biomass, as a result of the urgency in reducing fossil fuels consumption. This situation has involved an important challenge for long-term renewables policy and energy system planning. Brazil is the richest country in terms of renewable sources in Latin American. Brazil has energy generation portfolio not much different form the Colombia one, and the understanding of this very important country will contribute to inspire other countries in the region, particularly Colombia. Since 2004 the Brazilian energy policy promotes wind power development aim…
Acting on Conceptual Spaces in Cognitive Agents
2013
Conceptual spaces were originally introduced by G ardenfors as a bridge between symbolic and connectionist models of information representation. In our opinion, a cognitive agent, besides being able to work within his (current) conceptual space, must also be able to `produce a new space' by means of `global' operations. These are operations which, acting on a conceptual space taken as a whole, generate other conceptual spaces.
